I’m planning a new FSX computer gamer build and I’d like your help. I‘ve consulted TXNETCOP (Ted) and this is what I/we have arrived at. Both he and I would like your input. I already have an Intel e8400 in hand and I’m planning to use DDR3 memory unless someone can give me a compelling reason to use DDR2.
Let me know what you think!!

I’ll pick up a Microsoft mouse to complete the build. Comment away, I’d really like to hear your opinions! Let me know what you’d change and why or what I forgot to add. I know if I wait a few weeks prices will drop on video cards and memory….
Thanks!

I have the Logitech G15 backlit keyboard. Other than being a bit bigger, I really like the extra 18 function keys on the left. 18 x 3 really, if you use the 3 mode select buttons. I have them set up in three modes: Auto pilot, views, and systems. I REALLY like having a single key dedicated to speed bug up or speed bug down, or back course toggle, etc. I don't think I can go back to ctrl+shift or ctrl+ or shift+ combos again. Bleh. Yeah, I can do it all through v/c (if implemented), but I can do it a lot faster with dedicated keys. Although, I have to admit, with TrackIR, v/c can be used pretty quickly (once again, if the functions are implemented for mouse control!)

I prefer Intel motherboards. I'd buy one of the following:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121338
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121090
I've never had a problem with an Intel motherboard. I've always had better luck with motherboards with Intel's chipsets than motherboards with nvidia's chipsets. Occasionally, I try something other than an Intel motherboard and I usually end up wondering why......... Could be that I'm not smart enough to set up the other manufacturers motherboards. I never have trouble with Intel's though. The last nvidia chipset board I tried has a 680i chipset. I do not like that board!!!
The only reason that I can give for using DDR2 rather than DDR3 is price. You can buy a lot of DDR2 for the price of a little DDR3. If you can swing the price of DDR3 it's probably better to buy DDR3. (DDR2 will eventually go the way of DDR.)
I don't think you can do any better than your choices for PSU and video card.
Monitor: I have a 24" Dell. I like it. (Wish it was a 30" though.)
I've been playing with Vista since RC1. I can't give you any reason to choose Vista over XP......... I get along with XP. I tolerate Vista. I use XP the most.
Cases: The two cases that I like the most are the Cooler Master 810 and the Cooler Master 690.
CPU Coolers: I've tried a bunch of them but not the one you've chosen. Coolers that I can recommend: Tuniq Tower 120 (good cooler), Zalman 9700 (good cooler), Zalman 9500 (I wouldn't try to use a 9500 on a quad core), Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (very good cooler but expensive, doesn't come with a fan, and is a PIA to install). Currently I'm running 4 TRUE's and 1 Zalman 9700 - all on overclocked Core 2 Quads.
CD/DVD burner: I have the same one that you've chosen. I like it but I do very little with it (I don't burn many CDs or DVDs). I haven't had any problems that I attribute to the hardware or software - just the nut behind the keyboard.

Hey Kevin you won't use DDR2 on that motherboard. It is DDR3 only. David you are right however if he is going to run SLI at some point in the future the NFORCE boards seem to do a better job it. I am a fan of the Intel Chipset myself and like CROSSFIRE but CROSSFIRE with the HD3870 is not as fast as SLI with NVIDIA...hence Kevin's choice...well unless he wants to buy a CROSSFIRE board with 2 HD 3870-x2s:applause::applause::applause:

Crater; I looked at that keyboard but it won't fit on my keyboard drawer.
David; I wish I had the cash for the 30" Dell monitor!! Ted suggested the EVGA board as he had great luck with overclocking and that's what I want to do. I don't know if it makes sense but I'm attempting to do some futureproofing and SLI the video. Basically, I'd save $50 dropping to the DDR2 motherboard and $110 going to DDR3 memory. For that price delta I'd rather have the "faster" components!
Ted; I also had a second option using the DDR2 EVGA board and PC8500 memory but I only would save $160.
Keep up the comments, they help me refine my choices!

This is a recent build for someone at TechCorp I had done since February using the EVGA 780i and a Q6600 processor, and the EVGA 8800 G-92 SSC! This thing rocks. He asked not to be named because he doesn't want a ton of emails. This is using DDR2 1200 mhz SLI ready memory. Sorry no numbers for FSX or FS9 flight simming as he hates anything but shooters and racing.

No kidding! That is impressive.
I can't get a QX6700 up to 4GHz, much less a Q6600. That 780i must be a lot better than the 680i and D975XBX2.
I'm going to have to run 3DMark'06 again and see what I get. I don't think I can get close to that score though.

David I really enjoyed this build. I love the new EVGA boards for SLI, but I also love the Gigabyte DQ6 x38 and x48 boards-they are smokin' HOT.
James, David, and Rex are software and hardware pros at TechCorp, but even they could not get the right combination. They still don't know my secret. Believe it or not the board was stable on air using a Freezer 7 Pro set to 2500 RPM. The case was a COSMOS 1000 RC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119138
This was the fastest build I ever did. If I were interested in SLI, which I'm not, I prefer CROSSFIRE, I would build off of the EVGA platform combined with the new to come 9800 GXT2. I can't even afford the case alone so I will be content to build for others and have my fun that way.
I was told by REX that his 790i Ultra with the E8500 will beat the 780i I did for James-we'll see! If he does, it won't be by much.
Ted
A caution for builders. I was told by a tech at EVGA that the SATA 0 and 1 housing at the edge of the board is very delicate and to install your SATA cables very carefully, and if shipped to pad that area with something very shock absorbing. Right in front of the SATA housing is a capacitor and some circuit paths that can be damaged and cause the board to go bonkers.

Yes, XP scored better than Vista Ultimate 64. See above (have edited now).
Both systems are as near identical as I could build them except for the operating system and RAM (3GB for 32 bit and 4GB for 64 bit). Well...... I do have a sound card in one and the other is using onboard sound and the DVD burners are slightly different.......

Ted & David,
Wow!! I won't tell you my score on my e6600........
So Ted, you were able to get that score with DDR2 memory and the EVGA 780i board? Will the DDR3 memory and the 790i board move the numbers higher?
All, great comments!!

Don't know yet buddy. I haven't got my hands on one yet, but it sure is full of promise. The BIOS are getting better all the time on the x-48 motherboards and that means DDR3 will advance as well.

Ted,
I'm rethinking my build based on your 3DMark test scores with DDR2 memory. Are you planning a DDR3 build? Would you like a test bed???? :d
I need to analyze the true difference in cost between a DDR2 and DDR3 system. If it isn't much there's no sense in building DDR2 even if the FPS in FSX is the same.

Hey Kevin here is some encouragement from one the guys at Tech. This is with 2 HD3870s(not x2) in CROSSFIRE and the Gigabyte board is the X-48 DQ6 however it is the same chipset as your DS4 and the same BIOS for overclocking. You can move up to the QX9770 with the X-38/x-48 DQ6 or the DS4 at a later date if prices come down with the advent of Nehalem

I'll give you my opinion (and that's all it is - an opinion from me).
I don't know a thing about that motherboard.
RAM looks good.
I've never had a high end ATI video card. From what I've read that's a good one though.
I have two PC P&C Silencer 750s - not that model but close enough. Good power supply.
The only LCD monitors that I've owned were all Dells.....
I've never tried that CPU cooler. Ted likes it though. I do like the fact that it blows the air towards the rear case fan.
I'd consider this DVD burner. It's only $2 more and it's SATA.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106057
I like this keyboard and mouse. I have one, my son has one, and I have the predecessor to this one. They've been very reliable and they aren't expensive.

I like this keyboard and DVD as well, David. The only bad thing about the the Freezer 7 PRO is that it is push pin, which I hate, but it cools like crazy and you can situation the fan so that it blows straight out the rear of the case. Excellent exhaust. I also like the Tuniq Tower, but at times it is very inconvenient to use. Thermalright makes some very nice coolers as well.

Guys and Gals,
I need your advice. I’m ready to punch the order button at Newegg on my new computer and am wanting input regarding LCD monitors. I currently have a 22” Samsung 226BW SyncMaster that runs at 2ms response and other fine goodies. I’d like to get a bigger monitor with 2ms response rate and comparable picture quality to what I currently have. By the way, I really love the visuals and clarity on the Samsung 22”.
Here are my current options, if you have others I’d love to see them:
Current choice, 24” Acer for $389: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009125 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009125)
Another choice, 26” Westinghouse for $449: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824255011 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824255011)
Another choice, 28” Hanns-G for $499: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254026 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254026)

ButcherBird,
I'm leaning towards cheap but if the marginal cost for a larger high quality monitor is nominal I'll spring for the difference. I'm not planning to upgrade for several years so this one will need to last.......
I don't have experience with these brands but have read positive reviews about Acer, Hanns-G, Benq, LG and Westinghouse. My current monitor is a Samsung and it is a great monitor, therefore, I'm a little nervous about another brand.
Thanks,
Kevin

I'd still go with the 24" because it has a 3000:1 contrast ratio over the bigger Hanns-G model which is only 800:1, it also has VGA, DMI and HDMI were the others don't. If you are going to use HDMI, the vid card will need the same connection as HDMI and DMI are two different connecters. You can however buy a cable that goes from HDMI to DMI pretty cheap. If you do dicide to use HDMI then go for the 26" Acer, as they say bigger is always better.:d:kilroy:

I have a 24" Dell 2407 WFP-HC (it's NLA) that I like a lot. If you can find something similar I don't doubt that you'll like it.

The parts have been ordered from Newegg!!!! I know Ted is absolutely shocked to hear this.........:d
I went with the parts I posted in post #24 and the 26" Westinghouse monitor. After rebate it is $399. It had a 2ms response time and great specs and reviews. If I don't like it I'll give it to my wife for Mother's Day or our wedding anniversary!
Thanks to all who provided input, I appreciate your time and efforts to help me.
Now the wait begins.

The computer has been assembled and currently I'm installing Windows!!!! Yeah!!! :applause:
And it only took two (or three) calls to Ted.:isadizzy:
I may have some time tonight to install FSX and post some pics. I'll try and get a 3DMark06 score also.
Oh, by the way, that 26" Westinghouse monitor is SWEEEEEEET!!!! especially since it was only $399 after MIR @ Newegg Memorial Day weekend.
More later,
Kevin :d

I'm sorry for not posting more about FSX. I've been too busy with real-life work and FSX.......
I just tested my new computer, not OC'd, with 3DMark06 and had a score of 13170, well below that of Ted's @ 23000. More work to do.......:d
