This is the result of my first attempt at a trap on the Team SBD CVN-65 U.S.S. Enterprise. A nice three wire. Looks like all the practice on the first and older version paid off. Thanks Team SBD for a very nice addition to naval aviation. Now I'm impatiently waiting for Dino's upgrade to his F-14 Tomcat.

I have the base FSX installed, SP1, SP2, and Accel. Is that all I need for this particular add-on (which looks great!)?

stovall
July 30th, 2012, 12:25
Yep, that is all you need. One of the best parts is there is the standard install but if you wish you can go advance with ILS approach. Looks like Team SDB really did their homework. Has support ship and a hovering helo as well. Several talented people known here at SOH contributed some real expertise.

Is there a PDF manual we can look at ?

We had thought of making the manual downloadable but in the end we had reservations and decided not to. Also the publishers would've had the last word. But as Frank said any questions please don't hesitate to ask. We're also expecting a review in the next few weeks.

Hi

Looks awesome.

Is the cfg for AIcarriers included?
What cables does it use 3WireX or FSX default?
Does ILS work on the VRS Superbug?

Cheers

Yes there are a set of cfg's for AIcarriers, the ILS should work as Sylvian has programmed the use of his RFN Tacan Gauge which uses NAV1/Nav2.

Hi and thanks for releasing the BIG E,

I went to buy it but for once i decide to read a bit before getting it.

(DX9 compatible but NOT guaranteed compatible with DX10 Preview)

Did someone try it in DX10 P?

Mickey D
July 31st, 2012, 13:44
Just had a report from one of our beta testers to the effect that it shows OK in DX10 with all the wicks turned up only when he goes to full screen he gets a Java error and the ship dissappears. He reckons that's probably an issue with Java and not the ship.

Oh and if you go to our support forum on http://www.glowingheat.co.uk/forum/index.php you can download the manuals to get more info.

Version 3 is required and it should've been available for download on Sylvain's site. I also see that it is not. I'll check with Frank when he wakes up in Florida (he'll be very surprised as he went to sleep in California.) Hehe. We'll get back on it.

I was totaly unaware that there was an FS9 version of this and bought this by mistake instead of the FSX one I wanted on Flightsim.com shop.... I'm not getting any joy from there customer service ticketing system (been over 24 hours) was wondering if you could use any influence you have with them to get it sorted for me? I'm itching to get using this.

Just got this ... love it!

Haven't installed the LSO bits yet - but just had a minute to look at the model, and do a few launches and traps.

The level of animation is phenomenal, like that there are crew members in different positions (like the guy sitting on his bum next to a tractor).

The textures are phenomenal - I can definately see Sylvain's "signature" here, as the quality and sharpness really remind me of his Foch and Clemenceau projects.

The escorting destroyer and accompanying plane guard helo are superbly rendered, and really add to the atmosphere. I find it a bit unnerving to already hear the helo sound when I'm still a 1/4 mile out - don't think it'd be loud enough to hear in your helmet from that far out - I've never operated on a carrier, I may even be wrong in assuming that - no biggie. I really do like that I can hear it when I'm on the carrier deck, that's a major immersive factor - so if the tradeoff is hearing the helo a ways out, so be it. The smoke effect on the destroyer looks very good. No idea why I can't the smoke effect for the carrier to work, though ... :icon_lol: :running:

My only complaint (very minor) is the wake effect of the carrier - the big long straight effect that just doesn't seem too convincing - I might substitute one from another ship, that is more triangular in shape.

Flights on the pre-installed tracks loaded up well, and inclusion into AICarriers took scarcely two minutes.

Overall, a wonderful release. It'll be thoroughly enjoyed as my "go to" American carrier - for anything post Korea right up to the present. Yes, a 27C would be ideal for 50s and 60s, but until/if one materialises, this is my new Yankee boat of choice. Between her, the Foch, and the upcoming 50s era HMS Victorious from Flying Stations, the "classic" Cold War period of carrier aviation will finally be well represented.

Regards,

DL

Moneys a tad tight right now, she's at the top of my to grab list though when things settle down.

DL, I'm aware of Two 27C's though both see to be still born... one was a WIP by the same guy that produced the WW2/Korean era Essex, sorry can't remeber off hand who that was, and the other is by a French fella though the only info I have on it dates back to April last year*

Thanks FF,

I have Michael Davie's beta straight deck Essex - it's my go-to American carrier for anything WWII or Korea. I don't know if it was either he or Mark (Harper?) who did the Sea Vixen, Su-27, etc - who was also working on an angled deck carrier. Geoair's early renderings look good ... his work looks good, based on some WIPs of a Bucc repaint on Flying Stations' page. Alas, that repaint never got anywhere ... I think he did a Etendard IV repaint or two, now that I think about it.

Anyway, yes - great job on the E - and I forgot to mention - thanks for a "clear" deck option. It works better as a stand-in in the slightly earlier period with no a/c - so that was appreciated.

cheers,

Guys before you go repainting the Tracker you should know Milton modeled pretty much every variant of this bird for FS9 and there are already dozens of repaints floating around. This was the first to be overhauled into an FSX native model but the rest are on the way... Trackers, Tracers, Traders, even a wierd hybrid Tracer/Trader and CDF firebombers :jump:

Have you tried locating the carrier using the included flights? They should put you astern about 10 miles. The formation will be visible. The saved flights do work. Outside of that it's all timing. Please check out the manual if you haven't yet.

Concur on the flights - they work like a charm. I tried the FL, PNW, Med, and Atlantic flights. No worries at all. Make sure you have the flights exe opened and installed properly - it's a separate install.

I prefer AICarriers - that way I can get the carrier exactly where I want it, and can modify the formation as I choose.

Either way - they're there!

If you use the map to go to the exact location of the Enterprise, yes you will need to enter the exact coordinates to find the ship. You can also fly there using the instructions in the manual. If you want to practice landing only you just enter the exact coordinates found in the manual and bingo (no fuel warning) you are very near the ship. Let me know if you have success.

The coordinates that accompany the map images for each flight (pages 15-23 of the manual) are for the center of the track. Depending on what time you get there, roughly (very roughly) half past the hour, the ship might be there. Any other time the ship could be up to 12 miles ahead of you or behind you. The course of the ship is also provided so you can decide which direction to start looking.

The Saved Flights were made so that you are 10 miles behind the ship only a few minutes after it has begun that leg of the track. So besides being able to see it you should also have at least 50 minutes to catch it to do whatever you want (buzz, trap, launch, buzz, trap, launch) before the formation starts to turn around.

Under "Settings" in FSX, "Ships and Ferrys" must be set at least to 10% for the carrier to show. This is a minimum so you can certainly use a higher setting.

If the Saved Flights are listed then they have been installed correctly. Most importanly, you do still need to add the traffic files to the Scenery Library. See page 3 of the manual.

A little off topic, but has any had the ILS needles working either in the VRS Superbug or any of the freeware HUD gauges. In a couple of the other forums where I first learned about this boat it seems people are having difficulties. I'm very much looking to get this ship, but possibly not having a working ILS does make me hesitate a little bit.

A configuration file has been provided to add the Enterprise versions to the selection list in AICarriers. To install the configuration file navigate in Explorer to the "Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Boats\CVN65_Enterprise\AICarrier" folder and open the subfolder named "conf.d". Hello,

When you start a saved flight, the ship is in front of you near the center of the screen. It is a small dot and witth the FA-18 everything is going fast. So to slow down the process I change aiplane and I select the Bell 260 helicopter because we have a large view in from of us. I keep the heading. After few minutes I found the ship. The fact that with the Bell 206 I am flying slow (compare to FA-18) I have plenty of time to discover the ship.

I hope it may help

Hi

Has anybody managed to get the RFN Tacan Gauge by Sylvain Parouty to work. I've downloaded version 3 of this gauge, and installed it in both the MS FA18 and Dino's T45C. Unfortunately my French is pretty poor, so maybe I installed it wrong, or am using it wrong. The gauge shows, and I get a green hi-lighted message telling me it's tuned in to the Enterprise carrier after tuning NAV1 to the appropriate frequency (and Carrier lights up on the gauge), but the needle in Tacan mode steadfastly remains at the 15minutes past position, and the distance gauge shows dashes. In ILS mode, the needle does move, but seems not to point directly at the carrier, just in the general direction and again the distance gauge shows dashes. One positive... I do get the audio on approach.

After installing the gauge files (overwriting the ones installed with the USS Enterprise), sound files and the VEH_FLOLS_Trailer folder to the Boats. What I did to the panel.cfg...

Added
WindowXX=Tacan RFN (XX = next window number)
Added
//--------------------------------------------------------
[WindowXX]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=155,200
windowsize_ratio=1.0
position=8
ident=99
gauge00=NavOps!Tacan_Indicator, 0, 0, 155, 200
//--------------------------------------------------------
Added
//---TACAN Gauges Utilisation de Nav1 ---
//-------------Gauge Carrier Operations Nav1---------------
gauge81=RFN_CarrierGauge!TACAN_Nav1, 0, 0,
gauge82=RFN_CarrierGauge!CustomCatapult, 0, 0,
gauge83=RFN_CarrierGauge!Approach_Ctrl, 0, 0,
gauge84=DSD_Sound_Gauge!Sound, 0, 0,
//--------------------------------------------------------

What I did to aircraft.cfg

Added
[Radios]
// Radio Type = available, standby frequency, has glide slope
Audio.1 = 1
Com.1 = 1, 0
Com.2 = 1, 0
Nav.1 = 1, 0, 0
Nav.2 = 1, 0, 0
Adf.1 = 0
Transponder.1 = 0
Marker.1 = 0

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks Don, finally figured it out, the difference in Nav.1 setting wasn't the answer. My problem was that I was setting Nav1 whilst sat on the runway on dry land, taking off heading to sea, then calling up aicarriers to cause the Enterprise to appear 10 miles ahead. When I did these operations in reverse, ie magic up the carrier, before tuning the Nav1, then the tacan works fine, shows position and distance. Of course retuning the Nav1 after the carrier appears also works fine.

Your last sentence is the answer. When you tune the radio you'll get a message in red text on a green bar telling you only that you are tuned to a carrier (or airbase) that is listed in the carrier.xml file. Once the object actually exists (and since you were using AICarriers it didn't yet) you'll get a "locked on" message in yellow text on a green bar.

If the carrier is brought up in AI Carriers and you are still not getting the locked on message you can fix that by changing the frequency and then tune it back. Then you'll get the "locked on" message and all the advanced features will work. This assumes you have tuned the right frequency for the right version of the ship, there are four.

If you are within 100 miles of one of the 16 moving boat tracks you'll be locked on right away.

Hi all!

I recently purchased the Team SDB Enterprise for FSX. I realized when I made the purchase that the System requirements called for FSX/Acceleration but made the assumption that my FSX installation with SP1 and SP2 would allow at least the basic usage of the Carrier, even though all the bells and whistles would not be usable. The installation into Win7 64 went fine, with all indications that the carrier at least was in add-on scenery.

I have not been able to find the carrier at any of the supposed locations, even with loading many of the flights provided. I have also tried to slew my aircraft using the provided Latitude and Longitude references, with the same negative results.

I guess my basic questions now are:

1) Will this carrier package not show up at all in FSX if I don't have Acceleration?

2) If not, and I need to buy Acceleration, will deleting SP2 and installing Acceleration cause me any problems with all of my add-ons, such as REX, GEX, UTX, Orbx PNW/NZ, not to mention many 3rd party A/C add-ons?

As briefly noted, I have a Dell XPS8300 with Win7, 64 bit, Intel i7-2600, 3.4 GHZ, 8GB Ram, and AMD Series 6700 Graphics Processor. FSX CFG with Bojote's tweaks gives me consistent frames in the high 20s, with the internal limiter set to 30.

I had the Enterprise Carrier package installed in FS9 a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so being able to use it again in FSX is a real treat. If I absolutely need to have Acceleration installed, well then so be it, but before I make that decision and face some potentially big problems with replacing SP2 with Acceleration, I wanted to see what the FS experts out there had to say.

Thanks so much for your help!

Ed

You DO need Acceleration for it to work. SP2 does not include it.

If you do buy Acceleration, you have to uninstall SP2 before installing the Acceleration package.

Marine0326--- Thanks for replying to my question regarding the need for Acceleration vs. just SP2 to run the Team SDB Enterprise package. I will buy the FSX Accel package and uninstall SP2 as required. Have been discovering that when others have had to uninstall SP2 and then install Acceleration there are mostly no serious issues with current FSX add-ons, so I think I will copy my A/C and Add-on scenery folders as well as create a backup of my current FSX Cfg file just to be safe.

I do appreciate your taking the time to get back to me!

From pages 11-13 of the manual:

By default the launch speed of the catapult in FSX Acceleration is too fast (almost 200 kts coming off the end of the deck) and has a one-size-fits-all approach. Using the Advanced features in the Enterprise package the launch speed is adjusted automatically based on the aircraft weight, the wind, and the speed value declared in the "Full_flaps_stall_speed" parameter in the [Reference Speeds] section of the "aircraft.cfg" file for the individual aircraft being launched. This makes for a much more realistic launch and allows you to advance the throttle(s) to full power for launch of lighter aircraft.
