Actually Tom's did not break this story. It has been known for a couple of weeks that AMD, in spite of its recent money infusion is still in trouble. None of the newest processors that are to be introduced by AMD will even match the new Penryn core duos, and certainly not the core 2 quads. This is a tragedy for the gamer market as competition is really needed to keep the cost of cores down.

Agreed - Oh well, back to INTEL/NVidia when (fingers crossed) I build my FSXI system...

Advice to the wise:
Don't wait too long to do your build. If AMD/ATI should become insolvent the prices for Intel processors will skyrocket again. I am hoping against hope that someone picks up AMD on a fire sale if this should occur. We need both companies

I just jumped onto the Intel train, glad I did. My new rig smokes my old AMD rig and AMD just cannot compete against Intel for the higher end markets. AMD is still losing money and it doesn't look good for them. As I see it, if AMD survives it will likely be in the economy market with Intel being the only player in the high performance market. Should that happen, look for prices on Intel CPU's to go way up. We will be back to the days of the Pentium III, Celeron, and AMD K4. :crybaby::frown:

There may be a fire sale at AMD to another chipmaker. That might save AMD CPUs and ATI. It would be ashamed to seperate them as the Spider platform is an excellent idea that just needs a processor to compete at the higher levels. The new HD3800 x2 series video cards and drivers are awesome.

Best thing would be for AMD to get rid of ATI again. Ever since the acquisition, the quality of both the CPUs and GPUs has been spiralling downwards.

I'd say the market should get its usual players back and everything will be fine again.

When AMD bought ATI it meant an end to the partnership between AMD and Nvidia. The AMD and Nvidia team of CPU and chipsets was a tough combination to beat.

Good old times...I remember the day when ATI started kicking NVidias arse too well. It was the release day of the 9700Pro. :D

If a person was really very worried about this they should start buying Intel stock now. Then they could root for CPU prices to go up. :ernae:

I know I alway keep Intel stock at hand. If anything were to happen to AMD's fabs in Germany (natural disaster, terrorism, bankruptcy) then Intel stock will go through the roof instantly. Intel's fabs are spread out and Intel has huge manufacturing capacity which is enough to take over AMD's 25% of the market share overnight. :applause:

Major much as I would love to make a killing on the stock market with this idea, I really think we all lose if AMD goes under. It really isn't that their gaming core is so bad, it just doesn't even measure up to the higher end 65nm Intel CPUs for raw speed. I think the Spider platform is a pretty hot idea as it does away with the FSB issue and there is talk that Intel will be doing the same in the near future.

I found this funny to read the day after I posted my Intel strategy. Stock is already up 4.8% due to my post. :applause:

"We have a strong 'Buy' rating on the [Intel]," Mosesmann said. "It's our favorite large cap name. I think this is a cyclical business and they're in this sweet spot where they're likely to gain market share for the one or two years."
