View Full Version : Places for the Hudson to land

Now that the Hudson is flying around rather pointlessly on my PC, I figured we'd need something to do for it. So like with our Lysander I am working on setting up some 'missions' taken from the real thing, as described in 'We landed by Moonlight'.

But since I've managed to install some nice tools and learned some simple things recently, I am adding flattens and some default objects, and in some places even runways, for the landings zones of 1943 and 1944. This is fun !

Very nice Francois. As an alternative, you could land her in my back yard. I got plenty of room. :jump:

For Canuck fans (as in, history, not hockey!), this will go nice with the Flight Ontario's BCATP scenery too ... wonderful freeware addon.

By the way, the 'operations' and (modest) scenery will be freeware, also available for those who will not buy the Hudson package.

Francois, your mention of 'We landed by moonlight'.

Yonks ago (1960-ish) the Beeb had a series of plays about Lysanders flying in and out of occupied France on S.O.E. work.

I remember at the time it was billy whiz, notably as the Lysander and the stunts the R.A.F. pulled off with it were, at the time, a great untold story, using a phenominal aeroplane.

Was the series 'We landed at midnight'?

Sadly I never paid too much attention to it as the war was quite fresh in the minds of my parents and being 14-ish I had other diversions!

If you do any missions about dropping agents, make it at night, with the brave resistance lighting fires to guide the Lysander in, under the Germans' noses, as was shewn in the series.

Evocative, or what! Heroes, one and all. And where is your 'cedilla' (have I spelt that right?) beneath the 'c'?

Graham.

Hi Graham,

Yes, flying by moonlight, I know.

(shameless plug starts here)

you are obviously not aware of our GREAT PRODUCT 'Lysander Operations' ......... It took me 5 years to get someone to build me a true-to-life and functional Lysander, and I then made a couple of night time 'misisons' for it. These are based on the book by Hugh Verity, one of the actual pilots of the 1940-44's Lysander operations. The Lysander is built using my the photos I took of the real model still flying at the Old Warden.

Our package comes inclusive of the aircraft an Operational Manual and some scenery modifications for the landing zones.

I am building the same sort of 'missions' (these are not pre-canned FSX Missionas, but rather descriptions of how to perform the operations and where to navigate to) for our upcoming Lockheed Hudson. The Hudsons too were used to drop and pick up agents and stores deep behind the enemy lines.

Since I am now getting smarter in making these little sceneries, I'll be making more for our Lysander too..... and also for the Fieseler Storch that we recently published as well.

(end of shameless plug)

Excellent!
The Solomons also are a wartime-scenario for the Hudsons.
I'm finishing Rabaul now, and already included the whole island of New Britain, so there's a lot of Hudson flying that can be done over there from PNG or New Georgia.

Cheers,
Mark

Horn Island was a huge base for RAAF Hudsons during WWII and I have it as a base for my AlphaSim Hudson. At least the military version ans I have other repaints that flew in other parts of Australia.

I have put in many hours in the Hudson being developed by Francois and his team. The engine sounds are very close to the sounds of the Hudson based at Temora. The beta team has suggested several changes but as we have not had an updated model I am not sure of what changes have been made.

Anxiously waiting for the finished version now.

The one thing I am still dying to get my hands on is a color sample of the inside of the cockpit frame.... the green color we have now is not entirely satisfactory, but Simon says he has no idea in what to change it. All I have is black and white pictures of the various aircraft .... Australia was a tad too far to go over and make photos as I did for the Storch, Gladiator and Lysander :-)

Francois, I have found a couple of photos for you. First one shows the gun turret and the second is the cabin looking towards the cockpit.

This shows the green but during the war it was more of an Olive or Chromate Green.

Hmmmmm, that image is so good that it begs that a nice photo scenery is made out of that. Are there any old / contemporary top-down aerial recon images to be had for that? Where is this located?

Cheers,
Mark

I am just an amateur at 'developing' and am glad I remembered how to make flattens (with a little, oh alright, a LOT of help from ADE :icon_lol::icon_lol: ) so please don't expect Orbucks scenery from me ..... but I'll make some nice places to get your hands all sweaty trying to land a Hudson or Lysander there !!

This one is near a place called Florac....... the diagonal stripes are the ld runways as far as I have been able to assess. The current (glider) strip is on the southern edge and along the eastern edge.

Talk about speed designing, today I had a 2 hour lunch break and made Florac photoreal in this time frame.
No coast lines no DEMs, no complicated blend masks, went like a dream. I have sent you the link to the files, Francois, have an eye on your PMs.

Thanks Mark... PM's received and working on things. My initial ADE problems are solved, too :-)

Meanwhile I have now received patches for the Hudson and the Word version of Simon's user manual....... work progresses... I expect a release in July now (since June was shot by my Computer Pilot work I'm afraid, and long communication lines between Simon and me ;-) ).
