View Full Version : Strange scraping sound on touchdown

On a few aircraft, I hear a terrible scraping sound .... Like a wheels-up landing (never done one, but that's the best way I can decribe it).

It happens with certain aircraft only, but with those, it happens all the time on all surfaces (tarmac or carrier deck). I haven't done a complete inventory of which are affected - so far, I've found it on Rob Richardson's Vampire, Flying Stations' Sea Fury, to name a few. In the case of the Sea Fury, it does it with either the stock sounds or Nigel's soundest.

I want to say maybe Falcon409 may have raised this before - searched, but can't find the thread.

Sim is FSX Acell.

Thanks!

DL mine was a "water landing" sound with every airplane. To be honest, I hadn't even thought about it for some time. . .and it seems to have disappeared on it's own.:salute:

I encountered this in FS9, and traced the source to the effects file.

Here are the first few lines of the offending fx file [fx_tiremark_6.fx].

[Library Effect]
Lifetime=5
Version=2.00
Sound=5
Sound Param=13

It's possible these days for a stock effect file to be overwritten and shared by several a/c.

I would take a look at a specific a/c cfg file, track down the individual effect file, and examine it with an editor like notepad. I just deleted the above [Library Effect] and never had a problem since.

Dl have you posted anything about this in the Flying Stations Forum ??

At the moment you are the only one with this problem, I certainly do not have it with any of the sound setups I have tried though I have have not tried Rob Richardson's Vampire yet.

The sort of sounds you describe will come from the main FSX sound folder not the aircraft sound folder.

As far as I can see there is nothing wrong in the sound.cfg of the ones you have a problem with.

Have you done anything in the contact points section as the sounds you mention can be triggered from there

While I found [fx_tiremark_6.fx] in Fs9 effects I can not find it in FSX effects.

As far as I can see nowhere is that effect being called for in the Sea Fury.

An effects file causing that irritating touchdown sound. Who knew! Thanks for the lead WarHorse. For me, it was "fx_tchdwn_s" that had been replaced at some point. With the default file back in place, touch down sounds are back to normal.

Ranger75, is this anything to do with DL's sound problem ?? do you have the same problem with the Sea Fury and Vampire ???

In FSX I have this for touchdown effect
fx_tchdwn_s.fx

Thanks all for the replies. Will review the fx files in question.

Rich, I didn't post on Flying Stations because I am not convinced that it had to do with the Fury per se. It was fine a few days ago, and now it isn't.

DL if you had said this in the first place it would have saved me wasting a lot of time.

The release sounds have engine sounds only so no touchdown or scrape sounds from there and neither does that sound.cfg call on FSX default sounds.

DL, can you post the [EFFECTS] section from your Sea Fury aircraft.cfg, see what we can work out from that.

I suspect the noise is the same one DL is trying to get rid of, but it could just as well be an entirely different problem. The scraping noise was heard with the RealAir Dukes and other aircraft at some but not all airports. I don't have the Sea Fury.

I would have thought that sound you have should be on all airports.

Have both installed, but this issue is specific to FSX. The default file size for fx_tchdwn_s is 3.5 KB and the 'corrupted' one is 2.5 KB. I don't know where the replacement came from and when it was installed. How and why an effects file supposedly to do with tire smoke can cause a scraping noise at some airports and not at others is just one of those always amusing flight sim mysteries!

Rich
June 11th, 2012, 03:49
Ranger75, 3.5 kb is what I have for fx_tchdwn_s_fx with no sound mentioned in it.

It would be interesting to see what your 2.5 version contains but I rather suspect nothing sound related there and your sound problem is elsewhere.

Have you tried moving your 2.5 version out of FSX to desktop to see if you still have the problem and move it back if it does'nt fix it.

WarHorse, ok thanks that's what I thought.

[fx_tiremark_6.fx] is not a default Fs9 or FSX effect it must have been introduced from elsewhere the Fs9 Sea Fury is one that loads it in Fs9 that incarnation will not work in FSX which is possibly why it does not appear in FSX effects.

Do you have the Fs9 Sea Fury ???

I was stumped looking for the sound file causing the irritating touch down sound at some airports. When WarHorse identified an effect file as a possible culprit, I looked for changed file sizes and dates in that folder, and found fx_tchdwn_s. The ‘corrupt’ one does indeed refer to a sound file [ai_touchdown2.wav] which is not in my sound folder.
Flying circuits at CYSN in the Duke, default Baron and other aircraft, with the good and then the bad fx_tchdwn_s files installed in FSX, led to the conclusion that this was the source of the problem, at least on my computer. We await the reply from DL to see if this is the same one there!

Thanks Rich, (and all!)

Just literally dashing out the door - can't fire anything up to try the fixes till tonight - but as per Rich's request:

[EFFECTS]
wake=fx_wake
wetenginewash=fx_spray
water=fx_spray
dirt=fx_tchdrt
touchdown = fx_tchdwn_s, 1
windshield_rain_effect_available = 1

I often edit the touchdown effect - I hate that big white billowy cloud one often gets with most a/c - usually with the Alphasim Scimitar's, has a nice puff of smoke. But in this case, I left it stock ...

Thanks again!

Ranger75 glad you got your sound sorted.

Sorry - I never intended a big forensic on the Sea Fury, but my case is no more closed now than when I asked.

All we've ruled out is that Sea Fury isn't the issue - which I said all along. Just because the issue got manifested with the Sea Fury, never had me think the Sea Fury was the cause of it.

Furthermore, whereas Ranger's issue varies by airport, mine is same for a number of aircraft on ALL airports/surfaces.

That said, I'll investigate the size/format of the fx'es mentioned. I'm curious, though, if fx_tchdwn_s_fx is corrupted, is replacing it as simple as hunting for that file on original disks?

thanks,

DL

WH,

I believe Rich is asking if you have the FS9 Sea Fury by Hanvey, Barry, and others. It's a freeware version, available (likely among other places) from Flightsim. He's not referring to a Flying Stations FS9 Sea Fury. There are some repaints hosted there for the aforementioned FS9 Fury, but they didn't do one for FS9 per se.

WarHorse, The Fs9 Sea Fury is not a Flying Stations model, a search on Flightsim.com for Sea Fury will turn it up, I re downloaded it yesterday. It has a number of updates available.

WarHorse47, you were talking about a effect causing problems with sound or some such and deduced this effect caused the problem.
fx_tiremark_6.fx

You said

"I encountered this in FS9, and traced the source to the effects file.

That effect is installed by the Freeware Sea Fury !!! which I suspect is where you got it.

That effect is installed by the Freeware Sea Fury !!! which I suspect is where you got it.Not sure where I got it. Lot of strange stuff going around these days. :icon_lol:

The issue I encountered was with the AlphaSim Typhoon. Every time I landed, I heard this crashing sound which I traced back to the effects file mentioned. It did not produce a scraping sound, but more of a hard bang when I touched the runway.

More or less what I just got when I tried it in FSX.

That effect is defiantly installed by the Freeware Sea Fury in Fs9.

Edited the effect file thus

//[Library Effect]
//Lifetime=5
//Version=2.00

//Sound=5
//Sound Param=13

[Library Effect]
Lifetime=5
Version=2.00

[Controller]

Get no crashing/scrape sound but do get the tire marks on touchdown.

delta_lima

Just to make things clear (thought they were .... :kilroy:)

Yes, the thread is indeed about strange scraping (or other abnormal) sounds at touchdown.

No, the CAUSE is not the FSX Flying Stations Sea Fury.

But (at least in my case), the sound occurs when I fly the FSX Flying Stations Sea Fury. Hope we're all clear on the difference between A and B occuring at the same time, versus A causing B ....:kilroy:

So, obviously the issue lies "upstream" of the FSX Sea Fury's actual aircraft install. Someone mentioned checking out fx_tchdwn_s.fx. Here's the contents of mine, which is 3KB in size:

So, thinking it may be pooched, I attempted to swap the existing fx_tchdwn_s.fx with a fresh one from the FSX DVDs. I've searched the two FSX DVDs ... this file doesn't appear to turn up.

So, if this might be the problem, I can't find a way to replace the file to determine that ... sigh.

That is a duff file, this is what you should have.

No sound mentioned. ai_touchdown2.wav does not exist, make a new txt doc copy paste this into it, rename the new txt doc to

fx_tchdwn_s.fx that should give you a good file.

PS: Kind of related, but a bit OT ... hands up how many of you like the huge white billowy touchdown "smoke" that comes with so many stock (and sometimes addon) a/c? I find myself changing it everytime I see it. I have found the Alphasim Scimitar and F-105 have nice, subtle puffs of smoke that are far more (IMHO) realistic - and I add them in every single [effects] section. So the question is, is there a away to change that default ugly effect to one such as these? That way, if an a/c comes stock with nice effects, then FSX will enable those. But for any other, then the "new universal stock" effect will activate. Theoretically, then, you'd always have either a nice universal stock effect, or a likely nicer custom effect. Thoughts?

I did'nt tinker only opened my fx_tchdwn_s.fx with notepad and copy pasted it here.

You could also just copy the file from Fs2004 effects, you will never find it in the FSX install disc's but easy to find in the Fs2004 disc's.

I keep a backup of FSX everything just about.

DL you did'nt tinker with it

Hooray!

That worked. How bizarre, since that's a file I've never edited or touched prior this situation. How does it become "N/S" ... strange.

It was installed by some I suspect AI setup overwriting your copy, the people who do these addons are as far as I am concerned HACKERS who can mess up the sim when overwriting default effects. It could have been a replacement AI soundfile that went wrong but it should not have been using a default effect.

Someone who has no idea what they are doing will either reinstall out of hand, or try to fix and still end up doing a reinstall, a lot of work and time wasted.

I avoid auto installers and install to a dummy folder so I can see what there is.

Ranger75 is due credit he had the problem and fixed it, I never had the problem so knew nothing about it

Indeed Rich, wise words regarding the auto installers.

I don't like them, and since at least the last 4-5 years, have never once installed directly to an active FS9 or FSX install - always to a temp folder, and then manually copy over what I want. Gauges in particular, I'd rather keep with the a/c in question, and of course you can't know what's going in there if you auto-install. In this case, I must have somehow overwritten the stock file. It was dated 2006, mind you ... don't know. Anyway - glad it's cured.

Well, to you and Ranger - many thanks!

Happy to hear it's all sorted out for you too D-L. Glad you brought the subject up! How and when the effects file got changed is unknown for me as well, but at least all is back to normal - until the next wacky FSX mystery surfaces!

Did a bit of Googling and found the source of the problem.

This turned up first = here

Modified touchdown effects for AI --- Version 2

This version updates the earlier files and makes the smoke

effect much less bulky.

These files change the default FSX tyre burn smoke effects,

making them less dark, more transparent and with a bit more

vortex swirl. I've also added tyre screech, which can be heard

if within 100 metres of a landing AI aircraft (assuming it has

been set to display this effect)

Make sure to backup your original fx files just in case you

don't like these.

INSTALLATION

1. Backup the fx_tchdwn.fx and fx_tchdwn_s.fx files in the

FSX>Effects folder

2. Copy the fx_tchdwn.fx and fx_tchdwn_s.fx with this package

into the FSX>Effects folder, overwiritng the existing ones.

3. Copy the ai_touchdown and ai_touchdown2 files into your

FSX>Sound folder.

So I decided to install Thomas Ruth's FSX L-1011 and DC-10 for a bit of a change ... didn't touch the effects folder ... the scraping sound is now there again. Tried a couple of different soundsets, including the HJG RR set specifically for the L-1011.

Affected aircraft currently are

Aforementioned L-1011 and DC-10,
Maltby Trident and BAC-111
My HJG Convair 990

In all cases, I've got the proper soundsets recommended and/or provided by the developer.

Also installed, but not affected aircraft

Vistaliners 727 = ok
TinMouse 737-200 = ok

These are the only additions since I reported all ok a week or so ago.

Most bizarre.

Check the Effects section of the affected aircraft for fx_tchdwn.fx it is another that was replaced the by the Ai effects install, that is probably the one causing it.

In the attachment zip is the three fx_tchdwn files find and replace all three in your FSX effects folder, as far as I can see fx_tchdwn_m.fx should be ok but you can change it anyway.

fx_tchdwn_s.fx as far as I can tell gives the smallest amount of smoke.

fx_tchdwn_m.fx is medium

fx_tchdwn.fx most smoke

so when you do your editing in the effects section all you are doing is changing the selection of those three.

Check your main FSX sound folder for these 2 sound files and delete them they are not default FSX sounds

ai_touchdown and ai_touchdown2 files

All the clues and answers are already in this thread !!!!!

This is not an answer, but a question. The answer may be the missing piece of the puzzle.
Aircraft.cfg SDK: 14th contact point parameter is the sound type.

14 (0)

Sound Type

This integer value will map a point to a type of sound:

0 = Center Gear,

1 = Auxiliary Gear,

2 = Left Gear,

3 = Right Gear,

4 = Fuselage Scrape,

5 = Left Wing Scrape,

6 = Right Wing Scrape,

7 = Aux1 Scrape,

8 = Aux2 Scrape,

9 = Tail Scrape.

So the question(s):
Which sound files or effects are represented by these types?
Does an entry in the sound.cfg (left/right wing scrape, fuselage scrape) override the mystery default sound with the sound file specified in that section?
(so many things in the sdk assume too much knowledge on the part of the reader, would think developers would have cracked this - any out there reading this thread?)

Rich

Paul there are very few aircraft contact points these days have entries in the sound bit as per SDK it is a left over from CFS2 Fs 98.

Aircraft.cfg effects section is visual effects except in this case the default visual effects have been modified to include sound this is what is causing the problem, the default fx_tchdwn effects of which there are three and have no sound have been replaced by ones that have sound, this unfortunately will appear on every aircraft that calls for that effect in the effects section in aircraft.cfg hence big airliners and small aircraft like the Vampire that was mentioned will all be affected.

Default effects =

[EFFECTS]
wake=fx_wake
wetenginewash=fx_spray
water=fx_spray
dirt=fx_tchdrt
touchdown = fx_tchdwn_s.fx, 1 = min smoke effect with no sound
windshield_rain_effect_available = 1

[EFFECTS]
wake=fx_wake
wetenginewash=fx_spray
water=fx_spray
dirt=fx_tchdrt
touchdown = fx_tchdwn_m.fx, 1 = med smoke effect with no sound
windshield_rain_effect_available = 1

[EFFECTS]
wake=fx_wake
wetenginewash=fx_spray
water=fx_spray
dirt=fx_tchdrt
touchdown = fx_tchdwn.fx, 1 = large smoke effect with no sound
windshield_rain_effect_available = 1

The modified effects in the effects folder will give unwanted sound !!, going back to the default effects will fix this as previously shown a week ago it was fixed now it is back this time I suspect for the same reason but with fx_tchdwn.fx being called for the other modified file mentioned in the download to modify these effects.

as per

Hello Rich,

I subbed out the 3 effects with the ones in the zip. The sounds in question were not present in the FSX/Sound folder - but regardless - the issue seems to be sorted now.

Many kind regards!
