On <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:date Month="9" Day="18" Year="1947">September 18, 1947</st1:date>, a day that will live in infamy, they appointed W. Stuart Symington as Secretary of the newly formed United States Air Force. Gone was the former U.S. Army Air Corps. They, being James V. Forrestal, then Secretary of Defense, who shortly afterwards, realizing his mistake, took his life by diving out of a hospital window.
Suddenly, guys that thought they were in the Army were told to change uniforms. They were told to stop singing, “Down we dive spouting our flames from under” to the gentler, “We took the blue from the skies and a pretty girls eyes” – ad nauseum.
Well, we haven’t won a war since.
I was thinking about a remark my brother had made relative to the OV-1:
“I always liked the OV-1....never understood why that airplane was still not in service.....The Air Force always thought the Army was trying to get in their pants with a thinly veiled attack aircraft in the guise of a "reconnaissance" aircraft. It wasn't popular with the Pentagon and it went down in 1996...meanwhile, its role was picked up by helicopters.....no helicopter has the loiter time of a fixed wing...shame...”<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
And so it goes<o:p></o:p>
I say give the Air Force back to the Army and start kickin' butt. We can start with Iraq.<o:p></o:p>
