View Full Version : New Mooney for Prepar3D

Lionheart

Hey all,

I am working on an update for the present stock Mooney in P3D. I had talked with John Nicols on this before he had left.

The Mooney will be updated to the newest Ovation 3 model version thats presently out on the market and will have a more realistic panel and scaled parts. I might be reusing some parts, like the landing gear, but for one, the fuselage and cabin are being rebuilt.

This should then be a more pro 'flagship' for the great Lockheed Martin. :)

I found that the Mooney has different sizes of front windows on left and right sides.. The door side's window is much smaller, like a pressurized Cessna window.

With a new technique I have created, I was able to make a nicely rounded set of interior pillars. The actual Mooney has very nicely rounded pillars on the interior.

I found that I had modeled the air cooling intakes (small round scoops in front by the spinner) tooooo small.. arrgh. The Acclaim has very large intakes. I was able to increase the size of them on the model. Check Rebel Sport Catalogue (https://www.ladysavings.com/publix-weekly-ad/?rebel-sport/) and Amart Catalogue (https://www.ladysavings.com/publix-weekly-ad/?amart/). Thank you Lord for enabling me to do that without too much mesh surgery. Very hard to do cowlings.. let alone redoing them...

Wings are in progress. I was going to use the stock FSX wings, but they are so simple, no curvature. They need some curvature!

Bill , looking forward to the new Ovation 3 and Googled some info as I wasn't too familiar with this model . Wow, I was amazed at the performance . 200+ without a turbo charger ! I was looking for the shortest landing distance and could not find anything on the Ovation 3 . Off hand would you know the take off distance(Max Load) and especially shortest landing distance ? I sure would'nt want to dent up your brand new paint on getting in and out of some the ORBX airports as we all know , some can be quite challenging ! :icon_lol:

Thanks for taking this project on .

Hey Rich,

Im still in the modeling stage, I havent aquired all the performance specs yet. Very soon.

I went from the Ovation 3 to the Acclaim model. The Acclaim seems to be their top flag ship presently. The Ovation three is their standard line from what I read at the Mooney
website.

Yep, they are fast! I didnt know this. I guess they picked up the ball from the Bellanca Super Viking.

A couple of more.

I learned a few tricks with extruding and curved surfaces on this project. Also with composite curved object blending. Some cool things you can do in mesh....

This AFM is going to need some work. I might start from scratch.

Most welcome.

Yep, the Mooney has been catching up. The new Acclaim does 242 KTAS at top out max. Cruise will get up to 237 KTAS at high altitude.

Note that Prepar3D can run raw models with no textures on them....! Schweeeet!!!!

It the texture is missing from the package though, the parts show up black. Note the top antennaes.

Would you be able to put this model back into FSX?

Would you be able to put this model back into FSX?

I imagine if you had P3D, you could just copy/paste this into FSX. But why!!? ack! ;)

As for FSX, its abandoned and done. It is also not meant for MS but for Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D, but it could work with FSX perfectly as they use the same technology and model files.

I dont have P3D....just got FSX where I want it so not about to change again in a hurry (I got FSX very late in piece and was running FS9 until about a 18 months ago)..I like my Mooneys

Roger that. Should run fine for you.

Glad you got FSX running good. Some never did.

I've never had any issues with FSX, even my previous crappy setup ran it well. And if there was no FSX, there would not be Prepar3D, so it's all good. I've been following the "new" sim very closely. Probably will wait for v2, before making any decisions, as the current versions might be some sort of transitional phase.

Alot of Animations are now working, door and cargo door, new yokes, surface controls.

Basic interior Garmin system all running including AUX gauges.

Hopefully the landing gear will be done today.

Soon, the paint and the AFM....

She is flying really nice now. Takes off smoothly instead of like a brick, gets up to 240+ at top out, nears 243 (max speed). VNE is 255, so if you have damage on, it crashes at that speed. Cruise is 234 and it does it well.

Adjusted drag on the landing gear and spoilers.

Installed the S-Tec auto pilot (same from the Kodiak package).

Getting better.....

I am wondering if the Mooney is still available with steam gauges at the factory? (off to find that out)....

Looking good Bill. Like others, I just got FSX running the way I want it so a switch to Prepar3d isn't in the cards at the moment. However if you need a beta tester for FSX.... A thing to note on all the Mooneys. The nose wheel steering only deflects about 15 degrees. Something I had to be careful of back when I was working line service and towing aircraft.

Thanks Brian for the heads up on that. The steering mechanism on this is pretty crazy. I went with c_wheel so that the gear wouldnt rotate up in the sky, as it would come out of the center tunnel sides.
The rear main gear almost look like Bellanca.

Out testing the girl tonight, playing (day off). Just did some mild adjustments to the airfiles; prop, overall speeds, flaps and spoiler tuning, and just doing some touch and goes. She handles so AWESOME......! The original is almost unflyable for me. This baby flies like a jewel.....

Lionheart,

I usually do not get excited about singles but this one appears to be a must have. The modeling looks great, new interior with the Garmin panel and great performance makes this a must have for me.

I am working on a simpit and this may change my direction on the type of GA aircraft I build my panel around. Is it possible to have the yokes disappear with a mouse click? 2D panel but only show the displays?

Thanks,

Jake

Hey Jake,

Yes. The package already has a very nice 2D panel setup that still looks high quality and advanced. I will be leaving that in there. The yokes will be hideable.

She is addictive to fly. I have been having a blast doing flights in it at night. Great fun.

I added a cool effect on the air brakes (Spoiler plates) that produce a vapor trail when the spoilers are deployed, which one would see on a humid day.

Your killing me! This plane has really sparked my interest in a GA single and you keep pouring fuel to the fire. This is really turning into an awesome plane and it may just be the item that "makes" me buy P3D.

I am jealous, and would like to thank those, who have the talents to manipulate the different programs to create items such as this. Myself, do not have the talent nor the time to learn these skills.
