CFS3 has been kept alive (like all MS sims until now) by add-ons developed mainly by enthusiasts. The biggest add-ons for CFS3 are the expansions: Korean Skies, PTO Solomons, Mediterranean Air War (MAW) and now ETO and PTO Rising Sun. The last two are by far the biggest and need some care when installing, so Installation Guides have been written to lead the inexperienced user through the process.

This thread contains links to the written guides and Tailwind's excellent video guides. These condense the findings of many users in previous sticky threads. We hope you find them useful!

A new guide to installing ETO 1.0 and 1.2 is now available in the Warbirds Index, CFS3 Other section. This collaboration between Grizzly50 and myself compiles information from the ETO Expansion Download Links, Comments, Questions sticky and the instructions supplied with ETO and includes many screenshots to guide the user through the process.

I'm not saying the official instructions are faulty - all you need is there - but many of our new visitors are less familiar with file and folder fiddling than some of us. This guide was compiled to help them get up and running more easily with ETO.

The same questions keep cropping up in the sticky thread:-

•I've got lots of add-ons installed to CFS3 - do I have to dump the lot?
•I made a mess of it and reinstalled ETO and it still doesn't work, help!
•Why doesn't ETO work on my Vista system?
•I can't get ETO to run anything but Attack in the West '40!

and I hope this guide will help answer them and lift some of the burden from rbp71854 and Ursa Major himself, Grizzly50, who has worn out several keyboards and his annual PM quota answering cries for help.

Main topics covered are:-

•I want to keep my existing CFS3 (using MultiCFS3)
•Installing ETO
•Editing ETO Batch files
•If it goes wrong
•Deleting a faulty installation
•Updating ETO to version 1.20

Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 are all covered, as are the 64-bit versions. The guide is a single .pdf file - all you need is Acrobat Reader to view.

eto_installation_guide.zip -- http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=13&id=6698

Many thanks to those who contributed to the sticky:-
0-1Driver, Grizzly50, rbp71854, Talon, cristiano103, middle, Tailwind
- and many others.

Should you spot a mistake in this guide - LET ME KNOW PRONTO! Thanks!

The Guide was originally in the Warbirds Archive - CFS3 Other section. It's now in the Warbirds Index file library and the above link is to that copy.

There is a new, fully illustrated guide to installing the PTO Rising Sun beta expansion for CFS3 in the downloads library, section CFS3 Other.

This reworks the original instructions by rbp71854 and Grizzly50 and adds essential contributions by mrjmaint and Italflyer.

Installation to XP, Vista and Windows 7 are fully covered, both 32-bit and 64-bit, and screenshots from the entire process are included. I hope the community finds this helpful!

If you find any errors, please let me know pronto!

The idea here was to reduce the sticky count on the forum, but if you want to read the original SOH threads, they are:-

New ETO 1.0 and 1.2 installation guide (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?22434-New-ETO-1-0-and-1-2-installation-guide)

New Rising Sun installation guide (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?62682-New-Rising-Sun-installation-guide)

Tailwind's New Instructiional Video (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?61857-Tailwind-s-New-Instructiional-Video)

There are more issues discussed in these threads which you may find helpful.

Hi,
the ETO downloads page says:-
For support for a clean CFS3 please visit the Sim-Outhouse CFS3 forum by clicking here, I click and see the SOH forums page, so I am here and presume this is the thread it refers to, as I see nothing about brand new install.

What do I need to do and in what order please ?

I have downloaded ETO 1.4 cumulative zip.

also 1.0 and 1.2, though in 1.2 it says you also need this, and that takes me nowhere specific, so I am missing whatever that was. Prior to that I ended up at the same general page when selecting the 1.02 link it said to also get when on the 1.0 page.

All a bit confusing..5 downloads and two dead links and a cumulative one.

maybe I just install CFS3 then install the cumulative ETO1.4 one, but it says to come here to find out.

I have a new powerful windows 7 64bit pro PC with latest Nvidia geforce GTX 970 4Gb vid card.

What else do I need ? I wish to run the Bomber Command 1940 missions and have never run CFS2 or 3 before, or even 1 come to that !

BOBC,

Take a step back, and then a deep breath. It's not as complex as it may seem.

A clean CFS3 install is what we call a vanilla install. It has the 3.1 and 3.1a Updates and Mission Builder in it ONLY. Nothing else.

:D

1. Install CFS3. Then the two updates, 3.1 and 3.1a, and the Mission Builder (optional). This is a vanilla install.

All CFS3 Updates and the Mission Builder are available here at SOH: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?catid=13

ETO is available only at www.aussiex.org (http://www.aussiex.org). You'll have to register, then locate it all in the Third party downloads section.

2. Install ETO 1.0.

3. Install ETO 1.20.

4. Install ETO 1.40.

5. Install ETO 1.40 Hotfix.

Use the official Installation Guide *.PDF file for installation.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt reply, some questions arise...

that 1.02 ETO 'you also need this' link that led me to a dead end, can I ignore that, difficult to do when twice I was led to that same page.

I didnt have to register when I downloaded the ETO files, will they be ok ?

The page you linked to for CFS3 updates, has 16 add-ons, do I do all of those ? I dont see anyone in particular marked as a must have.

I see there is a pdf in the unzipped 1.4 cumulative ETO pack. quite lengthy .

Its still a question of installing one at a time the ETOs. No one install does all then. Is the cumulative pack just a one download gets all move ?

BOBC

BOBC,

Yes, ignore ETO 1.02. It no longer exists. It was incorporated into ETO 1.20.

That PDF is lengthy, and quite correct.

Again, 1.0, 1.20, 1.40, 1.40 Hotfix. In that order. And be very sure to read all installation instructions and follow them EXACTLY. We call one instance of CFS3 or a CFS3-based sim an install. You will only have one install for a complete ETO install. One installation does not do all. You will need all part listed above for one install.

Hello, I will try my best to help you, please follow these steps.

1. Install CFS3 and follow the game installation instructions to install the game.

2. Download the CFS3 version 3.1 patch found here : http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=13&id=17790

3. Follow the patch instructions to update your CFS3 to version 3.1.

4. Download the CFS3 version 3.1a patch found here : http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=13&id=17791

5. Follow the patch instructions to update your CFS3 to version 3.1a.

6. After you have your CFS3 patched to version 3.1a, run the game once, and be sure to do one free flight before you exit the game.

7. After that is all done, download ETO version 1.0 from this link : http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/146-cfs3-eto-expansion-10/ Do not worry, this site is okay, there are no viruses whatsoever, and you DO NOT have to register to download the files.

8. Once you have ETO version 1.0 downloaded, go to this link and follow RCAF Tailwinds youtube video to the letter. You can mess up the installation and the game may not work. I recommend watching this video before you run the ETO 1.0 installer and also follow along with the video as you install the addon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaeCYsrLI2k

9. When you have ETO 1.0 up and running, go ahead and download ETO version 1.20 from this link : http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/145-cfs3-eto-expansion-cumulative-update-120/

10. Once the download is complete, go to this link on youtube and once again follow along RCAF Tailwinds youtube video to help you with the installation of ETO version 1.20. Link :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jggfk-bytFI

11. If you made it this far and have ETO version 1.20 up and running, download the final update for ETO, ETO version 1.40 from AussieX at this link : http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/1091-cfs3-eto-expansion-cumulative-update-140-install-pack/

12. Again, begin the installation of ETO 1.40 once it finishes the download and follow RCAF Tailwinds video to help you get the game up and running :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoZzi1YGVao

13. Download the ETO hotfix from here : http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/1408-cfs3-eto-exp-cumulative-update-140-hotfix-install-pack/ Follow the install instructions, Tailwind does not have a video for this but it is simple and should be easy, just remember to have ETO in ERA 1 BEFORE you install the hotfix.

If you made it through all of that and ETO is up and running, BRAVO! Load up and enjoy.

Hope that helps..

Excellent, clarified any grey areas for me, just wondering...the 16 goodies I saw, are they not required, being bettered by ETOs or are they of use for anyone wishing to embellish what the ETOs give ?

Getting operational, step by step with links and tutorials, perfect advice along with advice beforehand.
All those wishing to get up to speed with CFS3 will face an easy route with this.
I then will add on the Bomber Command Cologne mod, I have install advice received for that via PM.

Hmmm,
that You Tube video is excellent. It shows me that my installer is not working properly. I always end up with an ETO folder that does not contain the original CFS3.1 files. I end up having to manually copy the vanilla install files over into the ETO install. It seems that the step with the black command screen does not occur when I run the 1.0 ETO installer. Then I have to run the multicfs3.exe separately.

Is that possibly AVG antivirus blocking the process? Copying over the vanilla install files works but just once I would like to get the process working as it is meant to.

Yes, I would say with almost 100% certainty that your Anti Virus software is preventing the black command screen from running. I have Webroot Secure Anywhere and I had to disable it before running the ETO installer. Make sure before you install ETO to DISABLE any anti virus software. Once you have ETO running remember to ENABLE it once again. I've forgotten to do that a few times. :biggrin-new:

No, those 16 files are not required to install the ETO add-on. The only files that are required are the ones that I listed in the 13 step tutorial that I had previously posted.

Ok, I kinda lost here and AGAIN fail to install ETO. Could someone please give me step-by-step instructions for installation under Win7 64 Ultimate?

1) I have CFS 3 (patched to 3.1a, w/o no-cd) installed in "D:\Games\CFS 3".
2) I run CFS3 ETO Expansion Rev 1.0 and at the first prompt input "D:\Games\CFS3 ETO" path.
3) I do the same at the second prompt ("D:\Games\CFS3 ETO").
4) CMD window opens, I press any key, it runs few lines very quickly and closes; it doesn't ask anything about overwriting.
5) On the next prompt (CFS3 ETO Expansion Rev 1.0) I input "D:\Games\CFS3 ETO\CFS3 ETO Expansion".
6) After installation is done, MultiCFS3.exe starts. But instead of "CFS3 version 3.1 found" it reads "MLD Patcher", and I can only close it.

What exactly am I doing wrong?

Dornil,

First of all, stock CFS3 install should be at base loaction you itend for ETO.

If you do not already have it, please get the ETO 1.0 & 1.20 Installation Guide.zip here: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links_search.php

It states what you must do to the MASTERSTARTUP. and ETOGLSwapper.bat files. The new pathway to the D drive must be edited as a new location into these files when installing to a location other than C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 ETO Expansion or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 ETO Expansion\global_layer.

Also, check out Tailwind's fine ETO Installation videos for Win 7, 4-bit: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?66446-Installation-guides-for-ETO-and-Rising-Sun

Yes, I read the guide and watched the videos. As I understood, the changes to the batch files are to be made AFTER the installation itself is complete. But I can't even get to this stage since I am not installing it to default location (apparently). Higher up this thread I've been told that it is not necessary to install in to C:\Program files (86)\Microsoft Games, but could be installed anywhere. I am trying but so far I fail to understand how to do it...

Dornil,

Do you have CFS3 in the D location? It's best if you have a copy there.

Look at Installation Guide, Installing ETO, on Page 7.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games". There's a button with 3 dots on it to the right of this line in the long, little window.

Click this button to direct installation to where on your computer you wish to install ETO.

Ok, the problem was in A_mkdircfs3_etoexpansion.exe not working properly (i.e. not copying the CFS3 into new folder). I copied those manually and seemeingly solved the issue, installed and updated to 1.50.However I observe another problem now: Quick Combat does not start (CTD) if I choose any airfield location in France. In Britain and Switzerland everything seems OK, the single missions I tried also worked fine. Is this normal for ETO 1.50, or I still messed the installation somehow?

This is why I left Rising Sun until the end! :banghead: I'm trying to meticulously follow the install instructions, but I can't get past the 'run once' requirement for the vanilla install. I get "Please login with administrator privileges and try again". If I run as administrator, nothing happens. Any ideas? I'm in Win 10 64-bit.

Got CFS3 working with help from here. Much thanks.

So then tried ETO.

Reinstalled ETO 1.0 from the download, at "C" drive, in a new folder "C\Program (x86)\Microsoft Games\CFS3 ETO Expansion". ( my original install was on "F" drive dedicated to Win XP programs.)

Got up to the MDL Patcher, and it wouldn't accept "CFS3 ETO Expansion..." as a name. (Do I need to label this for the other copy, not the ETO use?)

After several failed tries, I concluded ETO 1.0 (an XP program) might be less compatible with Win 10 than ETO 1.50

Soooo..., I copied the complete ETO 1.50 program files to the C drive; edited the MASTERETOSTARTUP,dat to the correct "C" drive addresses, edited the Swapper file to "C" drive target, and the popup when it runs is the command window asking for "any key" to change layer files. No choice of layers first. Then it runs Layer 1 window, and after 2 windows of "UnitData Model name "bob_do17z2_Sk+ba" alrady used!" and another for "h75a3, then I get a CFS3 screen " The configuration override file is either corrupted or missing. Please rerun CFS3. CFS3 will now exit."

Can I paste in the uncorrupted "configuration override file", and if so where form and its name please?

Otherwise, I'm stuck for ideas. The clean instal fails at MUlti CFS3 (the MDL patcher); and shifting and editing the swapper & Startup fails too.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

First of all, PTO_Solomons and PTO Rising Sun are two entirely different installs.

PTO_ Solomons Install:
PTO Build 1.4 Main Base In stall
PTO Update 1.0
PTO Update 1.13
PTO Update 1.22
PTO Update 1.30
PTO Update 1.40
PTO Update 1,54

PTO Rising Sun Install (PTO Rising Sun Installation Guide applies to this Install ONLY!)
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-1.zip
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-2.zip
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-3.zip
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-4.zip
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-5.zip
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-6.zip
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-7.zip
CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Uisel-Installer_part-8.zip
RS-static-aircraft-mole-fix_installer.zip
CFS3 PTO RISING SUN BETA HOTFIX MINI-UPDATE

Any attempt to mix these two installs will result in a terrible mess.

Also, ALL of these files are available at Aussieix.

Hope this helps.

Installation sequence for each install is as listed above.

Yes.

For Rising Sun:

At www.aussiex.org, you need to register and log in.

At home page, click Menu at upper left-hand corner, and select Downloads from the list.

Look at right side of Downloads page, and click on 3rd Party Downloads.

On 3rd Party Downloads page, look at right-hand side again and select ETO/PTO / Sim-Outhouse.

On ETO/PTO / Sim-Outhouse page, scroll down to find CFS3 PTO Rising Sun. then click on it.

On CFS3 PTO Rising Sun 1.0, click Download this File button.

Then click Agree & Download button, and there is the list.

Just get the separate parts, and not the All-in-one pack if you're having internet problems.

I recommend not doing anything else on your computer while downloading.

I've been reinstalling ETO, and got Rev 1.40 to work OK, but when I run BDP Zapper in 1.50, apparently nothing happens. Rev 1.50 runs OK, but cfs3 doesnt shut down correctly using ctl shift Q as suggested here, and I get a warning "Unitdata model h75a3 in use", on next start up. Startup pauses and then proceeds OK.
Can I just delete all the bdp files in ETO Expansion installed files? I suspect Zonealarm has modified BDP Zapper in some way.
I'm hoping there is a shorter answer than going back to ETO REv1 instal, its been a 2 day task so far.

Grateful for any advice.

Yes, you can do a search for *.bdp in the ETO folder and sub-folders and then delete the results. I think the problem is to do with permissions in recent Windows versions.

Thanks for the advice on bdp & zx files. Did that successfully (sort of). I still get the "UnitdataModel h75a3 in use" warning, but startup proceeds, and ETO flies. I'd already made all the installed FTO files in App Data Administrator rights, and XP SP3 compatible to get the initial instal done.

My remaining problem is control settings for Joystick, Throttle & rudder pedals.

I've created a new Personal .xca file, using the CFS3 Control options, but it won't reliably change axis settings on the throttle and rudders. So I have carefully edited the personal copy of the .xca file. This works OK in my "Personal cfs3" instal. So I copied it into the CFS3 ETO folder. However I still have throttle & pitch affecting aerodynamic pitch and roll axes; and the joystick z axis affecting the rudder in ETO. So is there a trick in getting ETO to recognise a new .xca file? I just copied and pasted the file., and then closed the file window, and restarted ETOCFS3.

try checking the xca file is still as you want it, and make it Read Only when you are happy with it??

JohnCT-4

Thanks Daiwilletti.
Can someone explain the syntax of these commands to me. For example:-

<Device Type="Saitek Pro Flight Quadrant">
<GameMode Name="Player">
<Axis ID="X" Action="AXIS_MIXTURE_SET" Scale="64" Nullzone="1"/>

The original setting for Nullzone was 36, and the mixture control had no effect. But making it 1 had no effect on that.

Similarly for
<Axis ID="Y" Action="AXIS_THROTTLE_SET" Scale="127" Nullzone="1"/>

I can't get the P 47 throttle setting below 25", after changing the 36 nullzone to 1., and resaving the personal xca file, and reloading cfs3. So landing is tricky at 25" boost minimum.

And I observe when I calibrate in game, the numerical range is 0 to 255.

So my question is what do the scale & nullzone numbers set. Clearly my brain isn't functioning full range 0-255 either.

Hi John,

Have you tried using the Help function in the main screen drop down menu, where you can find display settings, sound settings and also joystick settings? There may be a useful help page when looking via the drop down menu.

Can't check it myself at the mo'.

BTW, I tried to send you a PM and you don't seem to be set up to receive them.

Also, why not make this a new thread? We are getting off the topic for the sticky.

cheers,
D

Hi John,

this means there is two h75a3.M3D files (with the same name) in your main game aircraft folder. you just need to remove the duplicate file. the game still runs as it ignores the newest dated file and runs the oldest dated file in game.

regards Rob.

Do I understand one of the posts above to mean that one can do a search of any CFS3 installation for *.bdp and delete the hundreds/thousands of results?

What about *.zx files?

Hi gosd, don't change the appdata pathway, that is still on your C drive! Only change the pathways relevant to your install, which looks like it is D:\Program Files\Rising Sun

Is it possible to transfer the rising sun game from one driver to another without having to do a complete reinstall ?

mongoose
June 24th, 2018, 17:21
Yes, one can transfer any install to another drive but you have to redo the Appdata (win10) by running the MultiCFS3 app and cfs3config. As PTO doesn't have eras, it should be easier than ETO which requires batch file editing.

When installing 1.50, after putting the file remover bat into the main ETO Expantion folder, it says "If using Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, you will then need to right-click on the CFS3 ETO Expansion Update Rev 1.50 File Remover.bat and set Compatibility under Properties to XP (Service Pack 3)." However, cant find that in properties. The tabs only have "General, Security, Details, and Previous versions."

Is this necessary for Win 10? Because when I run the .bat, (running as admin) in the dos box that pops up, a few lines says "The system cannot find the path specified" then it shuts down real quick.

Bump for Flamingskull5000, maybe something in here will help you find the answer to your CTD.
The first thing I would do is check all the bat files for the era swapping routine are using the same names as you have in your game folder.
