The first monoplane torpedo bomber of the RN. It was said that the Barracuda was designed by a committee and built in a madhouse. In fact, it was not that bad an aircraft, but early versions were seriously underpowered, and it was certainly ugly. The Barracuda was plagued from the start because it was overweight and its structure just could not handle the pressures put upon it.
The Barracuda was a shoulder-wing design with large Fairey-Youngman flaps and a T-tail. Perhaps one of the most unpopular aircraft ever to fly operationally with the Royal Navy, Fairey's Barracuda was nevertheless supplied in greater numbers than any other British naval aircraft, with no fewer than 2,572 "Barras" of all marks being delivered to the Fleet Air Arm. At one point equipping twenty-three first-line squadrons, it is interesting to note that the same crews who derided this rather pedestrian aircraft achieved conspicuous successes with their Barracudas, most notably against German shipping off the Norwegian coast, and in strikes against the Japanese in the Bay of Bengal. Its real moment of glory were the attacks on the Battleship Tirpitz in 1944, resulting in Tirpitz being effectively put out of the war until a final asssault by Lancasters of 617 squadron. Type remained in service until 1953. One part aircraft remains in the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton.
