View Full Version : Sticky: Plum Island Airport Contest

Helldiver
December 24th, 2008, 05:32
We got a Plum Island Airport contest going on here. The prize will be 3 GB of fresh memory. As you all well know, you can't have enough memory, as what's her face keeps telling me.
Anyway, just publish your best screen shots of Plum Island Airport, either flying or on the ground. No pictures of 747s on the way to Hamburg, after just leaving Plum Island..
Judging will done by Bill Womack and will be announced on the 2nd of January, 2009. So you got until next year to get your shots in. Judging will be on imagination, composition, creativity and just good looking pictures. Here's a chance to get some memory and show off your handiwork. Last date of submission will be January 1st at twelve o'clock PST.

Sounds good. By the way only SOH staff can sticky a post so you'll have to pm or e.mail a member of staff to make this a sticky or maybe one of them will see this request and oblige.

Can shots be editted in any way or do they have to be 'just' straight screenshots?

If I'm gonna be judging, I'd rather they all be straight, unedited shots. Just to keep apples vs. apples, y'know. This is HD's contest, though. He makes the rules!

I'm shocked that so few people seem interested in this! I guess nobody needs more RAM. Sadly, I'd love to have it, but I guess I'm out of the running. :icon_lol:

Hey Helldiver, can you post the specs on that RAM? Let's give 'em a little more temptation.

Bill,
I actually do not need any more ram:costumes: My XP can hardly manage what I have in the box.
However, I love to fly (and go) around that airfield and simply to enter competition with some pics taken there.

BTW - I've just been there again and it became urgent:redf:.

I am no expert in memory. These are made by Crucial. One is 1GB and the other is 2GB. They are new, they're green with black chips on them with contact strip on the bottom. They're memory, What else can I say?

I did liked the sepia toned L-4 since I flew Taylorcraft L-2s out of Plum Island in WWII looking for Nazi Subs.

I'm surpised at how few submisions would be sent. Maybe they're saving the best for last.

It's a small field for something huge as a DC2 :ernae:
You can take of and land all right, but finding a suitable parking spot is something different:kilroy:

But the burgers are nice overthere.

There's a DC-3 that lands and takes off from North Hampton, New Hampshire (7B3) airport which is the next one north of Plum Island. The field is smaller, it's all grass and surrounded by big trees. Plus they have a nicely restored Grumman Goose.
There's plenty of parking space at Plum Island. Maybe we'll just have a DC-3 meet there just for the heck of it.

Memory only works in the type motherboard it was designed for, so maybe you can find the TYPE and SPEED, such as DDR2 1066, or DDR3 1333. That would allow people to determine if the memory would work in their system. I'm sure if somebody wins and they can't use the memory they'd rather you send it to somebody who can.

Roger: I tried to download it, but the link was dead. I might see if I didn't already because back in days of yore, I used to grab any Hama vehicles I saw on principle, as they were usually great fun.

They are DDR2 1066 if that means anything to anybody. I'm giving away a dog. I make no guarantees about the pedigree or fleas.

Oh, I just got to try a C-130 out of Plum Island. That has to be a record for size.

At Hancom AFB, I once watched a C-130 land in 1200 feet. They have even landed on a Essec Class carrier without a hook. But the wingtip was a scant five feet from the island.

IanP
December 30th, 2008, 03:43
The answer is to take out a lot of fuel, Helldiver... It made it in and out easily (in was with a tailwind, because coming over the trees, I kept falling foul of crash detection boxes that are twice the size of the object they are connected to), but with a tiny fraction of full fuel load. To reverse course, I did a three-point turn putting the nose up the taxiway.

Good fun, though. :jump:

I'm not competing. I just wanted to show Bill's wondrous work and Mega Sceney's Massachusetts-001 together. The aft end of the airplane is lush and green, just like Newburyport is in the Summer.
The nose of the aircraft shows Mega Scenery's dull, grey background. I will say they are very accurate except that after a while the dullness does get boring.

I agree that Megascenery does seem a little "washed out" in places
The blending on the edge is really good!

SolarEagle

I'm amazed how good it blends with the default scenery, or even with UTX installed. Really when you're over the photo patch it's near impossible to tell where the photo patch ends and the landclass begins.

I do love this scenery for many reasons. For one thing the framerate in the area is awesome, which allows me to lock at 30fps for a glass smooth experience and tack sharp ground textures. I always take off and land as the same location, and tend to do my flying within the confines of standout scenery locations, so this one is perfect for that as it's big enough to contain me and beautiful enough to keep my attention.

Plum Island has actually been my prefered flying area for the last two weeks, which says a lot being that it pulled me away from my favorite FTX locations. These little photo packs with full autogen and blending are where it's at when combined with some detailed landclass. I bet if Bill does one of these to sit on top of FTX PNW it would be a good seller.

Anyway here's a few more shots, though these are older ones, so I didn't have REX at the time like you see in my last shot.

This looks like a whole bunch of fun. It's a little steep for my blood, but I am getting more and more into tooling around localized high fidelity scenery as opposed to seeing the world in FSX. We're at a point where fields like plum island are possible, but I'll bet global scenery at this level will never be available because there's too much to be done to produce it.

Just extrapolating the amount of time I took on Plum Island to the 26,000 or so airports around the world yields a total man-hour dev time in the neighborhood of 7,800,000 hours. If we don't mind waiting another 890.4 years for FSXI, I think I can manage it. :costumes:

Oh surely not, Bill! You forgot to add that as you get better, then you will get quicker. I think I can wait the 800 years (after about an average 10% improvement?)

Third Place

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=69375&d=1230892627

This was the last pic attached, but by no means the least. I like the time of day, that orange sky, and the low angle of view. But most of all, I enjoyed that the outhouse was the only scenery object fully visible. That's a pilot with his priorities in place! Well done, Tim.

Second Place

This is a pretty daring angle! It has the feel of a casual photo snapped during day-to-day operations at a small airfield. It's not glamorous, but neither is that old workhorse being serviced. Me like. Bravo, Scostman!

This is probably the only time you'll see Delta Air Lines landing at Plum Island. :icon_lol: The shot has a classy composition that features the scenery first, but combines it with the expected (a 172) and the gloriously unexpected (that DC-2). Just looking at it makes me want to fly! What more can you ask from a shot than that? Congratulations, Paul.

Minor issue :d That Delta is a DC2. :friday:

You know what's really funny? I thought it was a DC-2, and even put that in the original post. Then I looked at it again and decided I was wrong. For the record, what's the easiest way to tell a DC-2 from a -3 for the uninitiated?

For the record, what's the easiest way to tell a DC-2 from a -3 for the uninitiated?
I had to answer this one ;-)
Also the DC-2 had a smaller cabin (only 7 rows of 2 seats (the DC-3 had 3 seats in 7 rows)), and vertical sides of the fuselage, opposed to the round DC-3 fuselage.
Below some pics of the tail developed through the years, until the DC2 had a complete DC3-like horizontal and vertical tail. This is indeed due to the notorious lateral instability of the planes. I would say that the DC2 tail was a continuous prototype for the DC3.

Here you have tail 1
http://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/dc2uiver/temp/tail1.JPG
Original DC1 and DC2

This is tail 2 and 3
http://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/dc2uiver/temp/tail2-3.JPG
Tail 2 had only a bigger vertical stabalizer,
Tail 3 also has adapted balance areas.

This is tail 4
http://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/dc2uiver/temp/tail4.JPG
The rudder is already like the DC3, with a further development of balance areas and hinges, but no dorsal fin.
DC2-145 / C-33

This is the final construction
http://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/dc2uiver/temp/tail5.JPG
Dorsal fin present
DC2-243 / C-39 Also called DC-2 1/2, but I think the CNAC (http://www.cnac.org/aircraft02.htm) (<---click here) example is the true DC-2 1/2 ;-)

There was one tail modification that you forgot Robcop and that was the one for the military DC-3 (C-47) The little "titty" at the end of the tail was left off so they could tow gliders.
I can remember DC-3s, flown by Eastern Airlines, that were reworked C-47s because of this tail modification.
