wow..i dont think ive ever seen anything like that at a race track...seen fires..but never seen a fire quite like that...glad everyone was ok ( as it stands as i type) mike joy talked about mario running into someone on a road course but i seem to recall a race car rearending a pace car

Hey All,

The only driver in the entire history of NASCAR who would be able to find a way to crash into a jet drier under caution would be Juan Pablo Montoya. Now why is he accelerating onto the track when he knows he has a vibration? Your under caution - Jeez - Take it easy! Simply Amazing!

Expect the unexpected and prepare for it, never failed me yet.
Does the same idiot and friends expect that Dry Chem and Water on a fire that would normally be extinguished with Foam is going to be properly effective?????

Whatever, with the race being red flagged at over half distance it should be a no-brainer to call it.

Well in defense of the concept,
They go around the track (in "work" mode) at a very slow speed. Add that to the consumption rate at these slow speeds & that's **possibly** why so much is carried on board. That being said, I'm sure that in the future, we'll see some sort of advanced tank bladder system installed on them...

Oh an one last thing....
I've pretty much avoided saying anything about Montoya this season in a conscious effort to avoid what happened last year.

good lord guys.....

but wombat....they carry all that fuel so they dont have to refuel or get aught empty during a race......this was a "freak" accident....wasnt montoya's fault..something broke and the car went into it..and if you look at the film of the initial attack on the fire..they used foam..foam from a firehose..the engine on scene or that pickup with a roam unit..im not sure...but that fire fighter with the hose at the base of the apprene made his attack on the fire with foam..then the others started with dry chem..and some used water later....

i dont want to complaine....but i LIKE nascar and i really enjoyed my days in a full bodied stock car and i LIKE watching nascar..if you dont..fine..dont watch it....but do you have to insist on making nasty comment about it to us that do?...i mean common....

Dave, I generally like the big oval rounds, and I've followed NASCAR from the days when AJ Foyrt, Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti would roll up and win as a break from all their other work.
If NASCAR were smart enough to think of a worse case scenario and cover it then I'd be less critical of NASCAR.
This year at Daytona they almost [and I stress ALMOST] make F1 look good.
And FWIW, I remain an equal opportunity critic, be it NASCAR, V8 Supercars, F1, F2, F3, FF, Karts and any other form of racing.
What was once 'Motorsport' has degenerated into 'Big Business' and I REALLY dislike 'Big Business'.
Nothing personal intended either........well, maybe I get pissed from time to time when certain individuals slag off certain drivers with monotonous regularity.:kilroy:
And Eddie, we really do not moderate this area, it's more or less accepted that differences of opinion rule, which is part and parcel of motor racing and enthusiasts.
But 'Moderation' can be arranged if needed..................which would tend to dampen the 'enthusiasm' IMHO.

Oh OK I'll go easy on Montoya but he is such an easy target - maybe it's the car? :mixedsmi:

As for "crossover" drivers like those of the 50s, 60s and early 70s it's very simple all forms of top tier racing have gotten so technological, driven by big money and specialized in terms of the abilities needed that drivers can basically no longer crossover. There is no way to claim Mario or Gurney or any of them superior to today's drivers. The forms of racing today are just too specialized. The pure fact of the matter is we will never ever go back to those days. We will never ever see run what ya brung from your service station garage ever again. You just have to accept that those days are dead and enjoy what we have. It is no different in aircraft or tractors. Oh the wonders of technology...

Oh come now Ed, NASCAR have just been dragged kicking and screaming into the mid 1980s ............... EFI is hardly cutting edge technology!:icon_eek:

That aside, when will we get the comprehensive TV coverage that is the standard in all forms of Motorsport round the World?
An oval should be the easiest event to cover, but [and I guess it depends on the track owners] most of the 500 was shot from so far away it was near on impossible to see who was up who and who wasn't paying.
Perfect example was the Montoya incident, IIRC we only had two angles and they looked like the camera was 5 miles out of the circuit.

Not a bad drive to victory in the end and an impressive effort by Dale Minor to grab second.
Some very promising young drivers around as well.

Well, the pyro show was all I needed to put reality in my brain and tell me this race is yet another super speedway fiasco, would never end before well after midnight, and so to bed. I almost predicted the outcome, I predicted Biff-Kenseth 1-2, close but no cigar. So I missed the last 40 laps.Denny finished 4th, he'll take that at Daytona I am sure. Race was fine, talking heads drove me to bed as much as the ads and ennui.

Was about the JP4, which is for the jet dryer, not fuel for the truck, which is, after all, just a truck. Why 200 gallons I couldn't say, but they have been doing it this way for decades without any problems. Mike Joy, at one point, said "at least it didn't explode", but he was wrong. During the height of the conflag, there was a detonation, small one I guess. Reminded me of flight deck fire fighting school back in the day! Glad nobody was hurt.

Well unless something broke on his car, there's no 'Juan' to blame but Juan himself! He was on the dirt, saw the jet dryer too late, slammed his brakes and slid right into it.

As I mention previously Paul, I had 'always plan for the worst case scenario' drummed into me 40 years ago at the ADF college.
It served me well during my career.
That 200 US Gallons is roughly 700 Litres of fuel [working on 3L+ change equals 1USG] and you can get away with a practice like that for decades until all the stars finally align!
A personal observation, using that rig to dry out a track is more or less reasonable, using it to 'blow debris' off the surface is pretty slack.

Next weekend we get Round 1 of the Supercars and it is back where it belongs, Adelaide.
Despite my antipityhy for the series as a concept Adelaide is always a good week away, so we're heading off this coming Wednesday evening.
With luck I'll get Phoenix on our PVR ....... :kilroy:
