If we can have a thread about Aerofly here, why not Flightgear as well.

As you might know, FG is FOSS (free open source software), that is actively developed by a bunch of individuals dedicating their spare time to make a flight simulator for multiple platforms (Windows, Linux, OSX).

The release of version 2.6.0 is imminent, but release candidates can be tested already.

Nota bene:
Flightgear is *nothing* like MSFS. You absolutely need to approach it with an open mind to get the most out of it. Hence, some Wiki reading (here: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Main_Page) and trial and error could be required.

Since the FG is under continuous development, it has some really cool stuff in the works for future versions, like spotlight (http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=14883&start=150#p150460) illumination (http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=14883&start=135#p150311) in realtime (http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=14883&start=120#p149219), shaders for sunrises (http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=14755&start=60#p150427) or, plainly, new aircraft (http://wiki.flightgear.org/images/2/21/Boeing-787-8-splash.png). For the more militant among you, there's even a combat module (http://wiki.flightgear.org/Bombable).
This stuff requires a bit of work to get running, but it might pay off. So far though, you can run the official releases, which are more straightforward to install and manage.

Give FG a try, if you want to. You won't have much to lose, except some time at best.
