Off to do some dive bombing practice, from NAS Fallon in the VS SBD. Made sure to take off before running over the arresting gear...
http://i1156.photobucket.com/albums/p575/GHJ9854/FS/Fallon_1.jpg

Over the B-19 bombing range. Just as the target starts to go under the wing...
http://i1156.photobucket.com/albums/p575/GHJ9854/FS/Fallon_2.jpg

I thought I was diving too shallow, but when I paused the universe, got out for a look, I was in about a 70 degree dive, just like at Midway!

The B-19 Range is south of KNFL. Look at the knflmoa.jpg picture that came with the scenery. That shows where all the ranges are.

Best,

Time to do the "Fallon Shuffle!"

NC

Oh dear, not the Fallon Shuffle! We'll be here all day! :icon_lol: :crybaby:

For those not familiar, carrier air wings would gather at Fallon for a couple weeks of training together before deploying on the ship. As "guests" of the base, we were required to clean the flight line of oil/grease/fuel stains that we had caused while there. This was done with "speedy dry", and it was ground into the pavement with our feet. It was also done on the very last day, after the planes had left. Only when some civilian base employee inspected and approved our cleanup job could we get in our cars and drive home. And he never approved the first time around, never. It would take hours out there, and it was a common feature of Fallon visits.

Now I've got to admit, I went out to Fallon for an airshow when I was doing this scenery. Looking at the tarmacs from the air with just the parking lines drawn with AFX, I thought that I needed the shadings beneath the parking spaces to make sure folks knew where to park.

I didn't look down where VFC-13 was, but on the tarmac that was public access during the airshow, there were ABSOLUTELY NO MARKS. It was the cleanest tarmac I have ever seen. I figured when the scenery was first released, I'd get a blast of manure from some of the folks there at KNFL, but it didn't happen.:icon_lol:

Great shots, Zsolt!

The Fallon Shuffle is a rite of passage for anyone on det at Fallon. Installing this in a bit, is Salt Wells or the Lazy B included? And if you don't know what these are you are too young or never been there:icon_lol:

Okay, I took a flight with Piglet's Bronc to check the ranges, a real good match. Also I drove around the base and found the Q VFA-305's SELRES stayed in back in 91 and the Q HCS-5 was in in 94. Also the line shack and hangar the Firehawks used on the 94 and 96 dets. Using the roads I was able to drive from hangar we last used to Station Weapons and the revets. Almost like going on det with out the "shuffle", FOD walkdown and "Pigs in Space" at the depot. My wife likes it because I'm not able to go to Salt Wells and "shoot pool".

As an aside but in the vein of Fallon, when I retired from the Navy I asked that my flag be flown over Salt Wells. The Skipper said ok, an honor guard was sent along with the units CMC. The madam wouldn't let them do the flag, but the Master Chief had to explain why the girls not only knew me but why the knew him too. My revenge for all the crap he put me through when I was an AO3:salute:

Hope I didn't cause this Jim, kept recommending your scenery prior to realizing it wasn't public at the time.

Great memories as a helo guy there: young, dumb, and a government credit card!

What did prompt the re-release of Fallon was the fact that I've licensed this and several of my other NAS's to MadCatz Games to be included in their Flight Sim MMO game due out late spring/early summer. The base and ranges are pretty good now, but the gaming folks tell me it will become big time interactive. I can't wait to see it. The MadCatz developer's web site should be out fairly quickly and some of the community's best developers (and me) are involved.

Charlie, the last time I was at Fallon was around 1988. I was with VFA-83. The day we were scheduled to return to Cecil Field, everyone was told to be at the Transient Terminal 2 hours prior to departure (as usual). Well, the Ordies were consipicuously not there. The CMC was doing a final walkthrough in the barracks, to turn them back over to the base. When they came to the room where the AOs were staying, and opened the door, ....well, let's just say the room was trashed! Puke, beer cans/bottles all over. And all the AOs were passed out. The CMC went ballistic! As it turned out, they missed the flight back to Cecil. Ended up getting back a day late. And it was not a happy meeting with the XO!!!!

I was fortunate to go through "Surface SLATS" there years ago (a 3 week portion of SLATS for Tomahawk shooters). Have good memories of the place.
