Picked this up at http://www.virtavia.com/ :

Several older AlphaSim titles are being released as freeware in the coming days and weeks, starting with the EFA Typhoon package from 2006. For the first time, an FSX portover version is now an option. The FS9 HUD and radar were not compatible with FSX, but an all-new FSX flight model has been added. The original HUD is still mapped in, so users can add a suitable display of their choosing by amending the panel.cfg. The original FS9 sounds are included in both versions. These new freeware reelases will all be in the .msi autoinstaller format for easy installion. The Typhoon is available now, just head over to the Freeware pages : Virtavia Freeware Site (http://www.easyfly.co.nz/Freeware/index.php)

This sounds very good! Thanks for sharing. Does anyone know a manual or something for replacing the HUD with a collimated one, for example the Aerosoft F-16 HUD or the one of Dino's Goshawk? I fiddled around with panel.cfg’s of several aircraft in the past, but with little or no success. Is there some sort of standard procedure for changing HUDs?

I just installed

but don't activate ... and i cannot see in the window list...

Make sure you point the installer at your current FSX installation. If you have inadvertantly installed it to the wrong folder and want to re-install it you must first uninstall it through Windows, then re-install it.

It didn't show up on my aircraft window list either. That was because many entries in the aircraft.cfg file were wrong, e.g. the texture entries pointed to non-existent texture folders. Also the model entries did not correspond to the model folders (they had the words 'conning' added).

So in the aircraft .cfg I just made each 'texture=' entry blank and changed the 'model=' entries to match the model folders.

At least I can load the aircraft now!

The prettiest hunter is the skies. Many internetz to Virtavia.

However, my VC goes solid blue when it rains, like somehow it's raining blue paint buckets. Anybody knows a way to fix it?

Try these entries....back up the original file first. Copy and paste these entries into your aicraft.cfg, overwriting the current aircraft entreis.

When Frank and I were working on these files we separated all the textures into individual folders and changed the aircraft.cfg to match. When I sent the aircraft.cfg to Virtavia I forgot to change it back to it's original state. I have re-worked the entries and all the versions should now show up under Alpha. Carl had an unusual way of putting all the textures into one folder.

If this still does not work let me know we'll try to get you squared away.

Sorry about the mix up!

Here is a corrected setting for the 2D panel.

VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=10.000, 0.000, 0.000

I'm not seeing any issue in the VC when the rain is turned on.

Flight1 has a rain fix at their website, try this:

Did you read the comment about the HUD on the Virtavia website, repeated above?

I'm trying to lay off the "Missiles" for a while but the Typhoon is too good to pass up -- at least for now. I've made a few tweaks with the lights(Shockwave) and effects for those who are into that sort of thing.

Aircraft.cfg entries:

[effects]
wake = fx_wake
water = fx_spray
dirt = fx_tchdrt
concrete = fx_sparks
touchdown = fx_tiremark_6
contrail = fx_contrail_l
windshield_rain_effect_available = 1
startup=fx_dsb_JetStartHeat3 //Start-up Smoke + Heat Shimmer

[lights]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing
light.0 = 4, 17.494, 0.00, 4.516, fx_vclight
