View Full Version : Anyone port over the Tu-142 to FSX?

Anyone port over the Tu-142 to FSX? I'm getting the typical missing / obsolete gauge error messages on some of the older gauges for the 2D panel. Any help would be appreciated.

The exterior model is nice....I just created a quick and dirty alternate prop texture as the prop animation of the original prop textures (the first screen capture) is a too busy / jittery for my taste; you can't see it in these static screen captures. My alternate prop texture is a lot lighter than the original and is just a plain grey disk with the yellow tips, but it looks pretty good in "fly-by" view. The downside is that there is no obvious prop animation with my texture, but it's a compromise that I can live with. Note that my texture still does not solve the clouds in front of the prop issue.....

Thanks Pekka,

I'll see if I can use the 2D panel from that one.

Hi tommy, good to find you, season's greetings to you and yourn, all you love
yes, it is in FSX, today schedule is terrible, too busy for my own good or yours, will check later, seems that a very different aircraft has a panel ----quite extensive ---- that is useful, anyway, it may do good, OR MAY NOT.

Are you using the Samdim aircraft? I'm not up to date on the TU-142 but last I knew it was the only one.

Sorry if I'm on a wild goose hunt, gotta fly to get todays stuff done on time.

Yes, it is the Samdin aircraft.

I'm going to revisit the prop textures as I think I can work out a better solution than my quick and dirty solution as shown above.

Have you looked at the FSX version of the Samdim Tu-114 that is on Simviation and other sites. The prop texture should be fine with the Tu-142?

I think I already tried that. It might end up just being an issue with my computer hardware and or version of FSX; I'm running FSX Acceleration. The prop texture is just to dark compared to the FS2004 screenshots on their website.

OK.....

This alternate prop texture has only been tested in FSX Acceleration.

I revised the prop texture to something I REALLY like; it came out much better than I expected. I'll upload it to AVSIM this week and post the link here. The texture is pretty dynamic as what you see depends on how the light is hitting the prop. The screen captures below were taken at the same time of the day from different angles. I tried to mimic the real life photos that I found on the internet. What you don't see in the screen capture is the prop animation with really brings it to life. Note that this alternate prop texture still does not solve the FSX clouds in front of the prop issue.....

Thanks DL....

Might only be the prop texture for the time being as I don't have a clue as to what the missing gauges are suppose to look like, so I really can't move forward on the panel. For the time being I just aliased the default FSX Boeing B-747 2D panel; I really like it as I know where all the switches are.....

If I can find the time, I'd like to do a fictitious "what if" repaint on this bird. I think it will look pretty cool.

Alternate 2D Panel for the Tu-142.....

I'm currently aliasing the panel from Samdim's FSX Tu-114 (you must already have that aircraft installed) via the following change to the panel.cfg in the Tu-142's Panel.95 folder. You have to delete all the text within the file and replace it with the following two lines.

[fltsim]
alias=Tupolev Tu-114\panel

This loads up without any error messages, but I still haven't fully tested all the switches on this panel. When I first switch over to the cockpit view, I need to press "a" at least once to cycle to the 2D panel and then wait a while for the 2D panel to show up. The initial loading of the 2D panel is a bit slow; I'm sure there is a way to correct this by editing the Tu-114's panel config file to take out the VC items, but I'll look into that later. At least I have a 2D panel that looks Russian.....:p:

Backup your original panel.cfg file before making the revision as noted above.

REPAINT, TEXTURES ONLY (I've only tested these textures in FSX Acceleration)

Just uploaded to Avsim FSX Library, so it may be a while until Avsim posts it depending on their holiday schedule.

Tupolev_Tu-142M_FSX_V1.0.zip

The revised prop textures as shown above are part of this package.

The premise of this fictitious repaint is the modernization of the Tu-142M to extend its life and retirement to the year 2030. What would Tupolev do to accomplish this? The exterior repaint that I have presented is intended to capture the look and feel of a test bed aircraft using modern metals, coatings, composite panels, etc. I used a lot, and I mean a lot of artistic license on this one. It would be nice to be able to add a more modern 2D "glass" panel to this aircraft's cockpit, but this is beyond my skill set. I would think that would be one of Tupolev's upgrades to this aircraft.

REPAINT, TEXTURES ONLY (I've only tested these textures in FSX Acceleration)

I've just uploaded Version 1.1 to Avsim; should be available for downloading within a day....

tupolev_tu-142m_fsx_v1.1.zip

Version 1.1 includes the following:

1. Updated engine textures for Version 1.0 to correct some errant texture artifacts on the engine cowls that I didn't catch on the initial release.

2. A second prototype repaint. Essentially I just added some red color to the trim tabs and hidden flap surfaces; it's just a little more prototype bling / eye-candy. It looks cool when I'm doing touch-and-go's when the flaps extend / retract. I use FSXpilot, an autopilot program, for this purpose.

3. A "work-in-progress" engine smoke effect files / settings; I was trying to create a very light exhaust haze, and not a hit you over the head engine smoke effect. The smoke effects that you see in some of the screenshots below are in fact the darkest of the three (3) smoke effects files that I have included in this update. I prefer the lightest of the three, but you won't see it 95% of the time; it only shows up under certain lighting conditions / angles of view. That is what I was really trying to achieve, as these engines seem to be pretty clean burning when compared to the jet engines of the same era.

That's where you'll get the Tu's .... they're 2004 but are better than 'many' 2004 crates.
The default props [as Tommieboy has indicated] are pretty typical disasters for FSX but mods are available.
Setting smoke, etc for them was time consuming. ..[8 exhausts]...seems several have got into those too.
The 114 alphas can give you shine [metal] though the prop boss ends up transparent...so that's a no go.

I haven't spent as much time on the 95-142 as there's more to do with the gauges....finding 'nice' ones...;)

In regards to the expanse of the white wing;

First, I'd try realigning the leading edge of the white area that occurs toward the outer portion of the wing and pull it back to align better with the portion that occur from the engines in toward the fuselage; more of a straight line. That should help reduce the expanse somewhat, and show more of the metal leading edge in that area.

Second, if you need to reduce the expanse even more, I'd then pull the trailing edge of the white expanse more forward to further reduce the expanse. It should be OK to have a gap between the white area and the orange operable surfaces. But I'm thinking you won't have to do any of this in any case.

Yes...that leading edge was me following a panel line in the existing skin....it was cranked like that and the way the bimap is laid out you don't see how screwy it may be till you load it. I'll look more into where legit seams are in a real wing on a 114 and follow whatever that makes it...;)

Edit....here it is after a bit of looking....

Just one note on the downloads.....

Using the Qantas repaint as an example, when you extract the zip file you'll see the folder named texture.qantas......don't copy this folder over to the the Tupolev Tu-114 folder as I did to jump the gun, as there is a second folder within that folder (also named texture.qantas); that is the one that you want to copy over to the Tupolev Tu-114 folder. Jafo,

Not as exciting as your current work, but I'll make some solid prop disks for your repaints, for those of us with weaker CPU's to address the prop rotation animation stutter that some of us run into in congested areas. There actually is a very subtle prop rotation animation in my solid disks that you can't see in the screen captures below. These can also be used with AI software that doesn't allow for prop rotation animation too, so it's a dual purpose texture. I prefer light prop textures as shown because of the typical FS9 to FSX prop / cloud texture issues. It doesn't solve the problem; it's just my preference.

Lots of great hard work there, Jafo!

I know this might be somewhat pedestrian, but any chance that a standard late-life (late 60s) Aeroflot scheme, with the enhancements/weathering these fictional schemes received - could be considered?

Something like this: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Aeroflot/Tupolev-Tu-114/1230549/M/

Meanwhile i took these of the American Paint out of PADQ and the Cubana out of PADQ to KAST on the way to Havana. Next stop for Cubana before MUHA is KPIE, look out Ickie.

Glad to see them flying...;)

Re the Can Nth paint...I found the missing bits...so am one step closer to getting it done.
Having to randomly splat colours on where something 'might' be mapped...then load it to see if you were right....or not... took a bit of time. Tail fin was just the tail too 'short'...but the fuse-tail fairing underside was found by painting in pink ...it's an undefined rectangle to the right [in 888 format] on the Tu-114wings.bmp...;)

Here's the 'win'...;)

The white stripes either side of the black-out nose on the Aeroflot are supposed to line up with the frames on the nose nav window....

.....about 3 hours later [don't ask] .... I got them about as close as I could in the res/size of the image. I 'should' have scaled it up a squillion and chase the pixels that way....;)

These two have been submitted here...;)

78214

The Canadian North Airlines skin is worked from a current 737 aircraft [very definitely a 'what-if' only].

78215

The Aeroflot version is a repaint of the 'default', albeit with metal finishes and a realignment of various bits....particularly the black-out nose now aligns with the Navigator glass frames.

I'll have a go at the other 'default' ones similarly ...;)
Maybe also some photo-real weathering.....

As with the Avenger repaints - you sir, have an uncanny way of reading my mind as to what I was hoping for!!!

Yes, the glareshield line-up is far better - splendid. Don't know if this will ever see your "weathering" wire brush ... but I'm already very happy - thanks so much!!!

There's a bunch of good photos of some sad-looking 114s that'd possibly do for photo-real weathering....they look that ill though you might not 'want' to get airborne in one...;)

Mostly I skin via painting...so clip-art photorealism might be 'interesting' ....;)

Edit... early days of the second Aeroflot ver....not liking it so far....

Am a long time fan of flying this Tup port over in FSX and enjoying very much the new paints. Anyone finding that the a/c loads in the sim overweight with fuel? Have to drop the three tanks down to about 40% to get her below MTOW.

Messing around with a private/VIP "BBJ" version that will change the payload weights down and fuel up ..

Yep...I just halved the max fuel weight/capacity in the aircraft.cfg....otherwise [for those that know my end of the world]....taking off at YMML heading north would have you rotating at Sunbury.
Heavy ain't the word...;)

Edit....

It's coming along....stripes are still fuzzy....tossing up whether to repaint them clean per-pixel....;)

78249

Speaking of which...my old man was an FSO3 at YMML [Melbourne airport] and told me of the [unreported publicly] tale of the Jumble that took off North only to emulate one of these....looked like it wasn't going to lift so the pilot dialled in full thrust and 'just made it'. There's a church with pine trees, etc just North of the runway.... When the plane landed in Sydney the ground crew removed the tree branches in the undercarriage.....;)

The rework of the Khrushchev skin has been driving me nuts....probably really should have upped the nose and fuse to 4096 and get things to join up 'easier' [maybe]....;p

78305

Edit ...... finished.... after checking another photo and reverting the anti-glare to the wider style...as is correct on this version.
It's sorta 'clean', with sooty wings. Next ver I'll add some weathering...;)

How about that?
Just loaded the latest one....the modern ver of the Aeroflot...and the chrome trims of the nacelles is transparent.

Fixed/solved.
I'll have to check the original aircraft release to see if it had one...but you need a 'Tu114engines_l.bmp' [or .dds]

If you haven't got one in any of your texture folders.... copy an existing 'Tu114peredok_l.dds' and rename it.
Then put it in any/all the texture folders...and low-light texturing on the engines will be OK....;)

Edit.... just checked....and yes, there was one in the original...so you should have it....and can copy it to any of the skins of mine you use.

Darned if I know what happened to mine....

Doesn't matter how many you do you always find 'something' wrong with the way images are mapped to a model.
This one wants text on the Undercarriage nacelles ...and no matter how you do it you will end up with 2 of the 4 'sides' back to front .... not a problem when/if the graphics are symetrical...but text is another matter. It's either leave it out altogether or make do with some of it being backwards....;)
