Ok, so normally I'm not a big Mustang fan, but for some reason today I really want a Mustang. I have Acceleration, but I don't want the Reno Air Race 'Stangs. I would really like a war-ready one. Does anybody know of one? I'd buy the Warbirdsim one, but I'm more into the Classics Hangar FW-190 (Which is by far my favorite aircraft). So I was wondering, are there any decent freeware ones out there?

Thank you!

Warwick "Wozza" Carter did a very nice one for FS2004. I assume it will work in FSX with the usual shortcomings. There are some very nice repaints done for this model, especially those done by John "Bomber_12th" Terrell.

Cheers,
Huub

I don't know of any freeware P-51 that is FSX native and there is certainly no listing for one in the FSX native freeware spreadsheet I created.

Thanks! I got it and took it for a spin, and now the itch has been cured! Thank you! :salute:

Am the same as you and as it happens in the middle of a mini Mustang (freeware) binge myself!

Warwick "Wozza" Carter is great for the D model. But my favourite originated right here at the SOH - the FDG2 P-51B/C "Malcolm Hood" you can find in the SOH Library. I have had only a few niggles getting it to look and fly well in FSX. Have imported a freeware 2D panel (intended for the default Mustang "racer") at flightsim.com and there is prop bmp upgrade here under Banana Bob's files. Happy to share some other tweaks if interested. Lots of good paints.

Have fun.

I just had to drop the bomb on this topic, if you are after a really really good P51 and freeware I have one for you right here :jump: also this is the only in my opinion a good one.

****NOTICE****** this upload of P51 is freeware, I do not own the model....the model belongs to it's original owner, all the credit goes to original owner and the rest of it.

:medals: <-------- that is for the creator of this Freeware P51 (it's that good) :medals:

This is Wozza's (Warwick Carter) Mustang that was mentionned at the beginning of the topic. An excellent model, indeed.

Hehe yes, Wozza Mustang made quite a lot of noise when it became available.
It was my favorite warbird, together with the default CFS2 planes, when I was flying in FS9. The package p51dver2.zip also features some nice custom sounds, and you can even download a good pack of very nice photoreal repaints :)
I flew it quite a lot in FSX too, until I switched to Accusim planes.

Daube,

Where did you get these two repaints?

You can find all of them here in the "Warbird's Archive" (not the "Warbird's Library"!).
Just filter by author's name, you're looking for skins made by "yago9".
Here is a link, I hope it will work. The Mustang repaints are divided into 5 to 6 packs if I remember correctly, they started to appear in the list on the 4th page: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/page.php?lloc=downloads&loc=downloads&page=downloads&FileUploadName=yago9&ammm=15&pap=4

Bananabob did some photoreal repaints for that bird too, I think.

Expect not too many are interested as most prefer the D bird (B/C was a bit faster b/tw/) but I just succeeded in splicing/merging the airfile and air.cfg from Wozza's D a/c into the FDG2 P-51C. All you need to do is keep the lights and contacts from the FDG a/c - and of course the repaint entries. Flies and looks a dream for an old freeware bird. Tiding me over while waiting for Warbidsim to do their P-51B/C Flight Leader II series for FSX.

I don't know if it would break any rules or no, but I'd like you to consider uploading that zip file to the library. I'm still mainly a CFS2 guy, and would love to fly that plane in FSX.

I have never uploaded something but there is always a first time . .

Hesitant due to the third party work involved and I am sure I would see later that I omitted giving credit to someone, etc. Several members have PM'd me with their email and am happy to send it to you or others this way.

For those into light editing and modding, all you need to do is:

1) Download i) the FDG2 P51B/C and 2) the Donationware Prop Mod by Banana Bob here in the SOH Library

2) Download this freeware 2D panel by Randy Burton at flightsim:

<CENTER>FSX - FSX Panels</CENTER><CENTER>FSX P-51 Racer Accel 2D Panel Package
</CENTER><CENTER>[ Download (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/kdl.php?fid=118951) | View (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/zview.php?cm=list&fid=118951) ] </CENTER>
Name: p512dpan.zip (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/kdl.php?fid=118951) Size: 2,662,254 Date: 12-26-2007 Downloads: 2,035
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/images/fscfiles/m/p512dpan.gif FSX P-51 Racer Accel 2D Panel Package. Mods for the North American P51 Mustang. Complete with aircraft night lighting and full navigation equiptment to allow cross country flights. Full aircraft race form maintained. Made with a 3D panel bitmap, to better blend when switching views. Uses mostly stock FSX gauges. By Randy Burton.

3) Next, backup the FDG air.cfg. Then make a copy of the Warwick Carter P51D air.cfg and place this into the FDG P51 folder. Copy from the FDG air.cfg, and paste/replace in the Warwick Carter P51D air.cfg the following:

i) your favorite FDG2 P51B/C [fltsim.xx] repaint entries at the top NB: you need to change the "sim" line to match the Carter airfile name for each entry.

ii) contact points

iii) lights

this is your new air.cfg

4) add the Carter P51D airfile into your FDG folder (you can just leave the original there or delete it if you prefer).

I also lifted Wozza's sound file (thanks mate!) but there are others around.

Like to say "you should be good to go", but I am sure I have omitted or not explained clearly something!

Your instructions worked really well. I was also able to slide the FDG2 vc into the Racer panel.cfg with no trouble. Thanks for the help.

Hey James! Great news. Very cool RAF paint. Glad to hear you got it all together. Nice ride for a lash up of old spare parts. Have you been able to drop the tanks in FSX? Not figured that out yet myself but seeing all the WBS P51 screenies with the planes sporting wing tanks I now have got used to it looking OK.

I haven't tried losing the tanks yet. In Wozza's model there's an arm and release switch in the VC, but I don't know if this would work in the FDG2 model even if it could be ported over, and I see nothing in the original FDG2 readme about dropping the external tanks.

I'm running two versions of this a/c, one with Wozza's airfile, and another with the FDG2 airfile. I have no trouble getting to around 420mph at 20,000ft with a 48% mixture. Is there something in particular you don't like about the original airfile?

I was having problems with trimming, in particular the pitch was overly sensitive and the plane wanted to head down, requiring constant up trim, indicating a C.O.G issue perhaps. Wozza's FDE is much more stable.

Thanks for the answer. I've noticed this myself. The FDG2 is a bit more skittish. I'm curious as to how it behaves when the main fuel tank is below 50%. I'll eventually get to it, but time has been at a premium. Thanks again for your help.
