BBO,

Good to hear from another rag-bag pilot.

What WW1 sim are you flying?

My WW1 sims: CFS-1 WW1, CFS-2 WW1, CFS-3 WW1 and First Eagles. No real favorite as they are slightly different and all equal fun.

Welcome to the UNfriendly skies of the Eastern (or Western?) Front.

Regards,
Ken

What? No Red Baron? I know I know, it don't work on XP...:crybaby: But I loved the music while flying; didn't like that somber music accompanying my coffin tho....

Ed,

Red Baron was my first WW1 flight sim. Still have the software and all of the add-ons. Maybe someday I'll build a fast W98 machine for some of the "older" sims.

Regards,
Ken

Gentlemen, this is my first vist to this area of sim-outhouse. I spend way too much time in CFS2.
I was surprised to read Ed's comment that Red Baron3d doesnt work on XP.
It does.
The XP conflicts were resolved some years ago and the sim itself has undergone some great changes, even in the past year.

I currently fly the Western Front Patch by Pat Wilson, (on my XP) which as you may already know comprises over 80 flyable aircraft during the course of the entire war. The graphics for this great patch have had a tremendous improvement from the donation of skins and cockpits from the Full Canvas Jacket project. The Moving Front Patch by Mark66 provides improved maps with accurately placed airfield and towns as well as the changing frontline and 30 or more diffently style airfields.

Through Greybeard's dedicated and continuing work with the flight modes, each of the 80 or so aircraft has its own handling capabilities. The upshot of his work is that the AI can now fly each of their aircraft much more aggressively and 'intelligently' and present more formidable opponents. On my last flight, only last week, I was fool enough to lead my flight, after checking for overhead enemies, on a dive on two Alb DIIIs who were low and apparently heading to an airfield. Bad move. We were bounced by another five Albs and after finishing off my two wingmen the five took turns each diving and firing on me so that until I hit the ground I was under a constant hail of enemy fire. They just dont idle about anymore while one makes an indifferent attempt on you!

Reload is a new RB related utility by Gabilaser which has probably improved the game more than anything else and the latest version was released last year.
It modifies the simple fps field into a very comprehensive display that involves several factors that the player can choose to utilise and adjust.
It features a bullet counter for each gun, a status field for jams and reloads (for Lewis guns)- jams and reloads require very specific actions, very unnerving in a dogfight, sometimes guns can be jammed permanently- very very unnerving.
It also carries an XP sound fix.
It allows for five different engine controls, depending on which aircraft you are flying. It also includes an engine reliability factor which adds engine failure to the risks of a mission.
Wind, its heading and velocity are also included, yes, you are subject to a constant wind during your mission which can play havoc with your navigation.
Reload also allows AI two seater to use their front guns and as an unexpected outcome enemy two seaters now fight back. There have been several reports of two seaters shooting down and driving off attacking scouts.
And probably most amazing of all Reload makes RB3D TrackIR compliant. If you dont have TrackIR, the mouse can now be employed for the full 360 pan.
Its one neat little utility.
Gabilaser has also been involved in specific alterations to glide wrappers and there are now two available that work extremely well on nearly all machines.
Several enthusiasts have been using RB3d on Vista too, but we await news of any longer term bugs in that direction.

I recommend taking another look at the old game. It may not look as 'real' as the very latest games but with the FCJ graphics in WFP its looking pretty bloody good. And you just wont get as good a dogfight anywhere else.
I should also mention the excellent Hells Angels Patch too, which is a simpler but beautifully rendered patch for RB.

If you're really interested, you can download the WFP from:

you will also need von Tom's Campaign Manager also available at the above site.
If you have any queries just ask at the SWWISA forum, they're very good people.

Evening folks... Began to think the WW1 Era had died or I was diagnosed with a horrible illness :redf: Red Baron 3D yes it will run on Vista as I have it installed but wanna run it for a week or so to observe long term Quirks. Oh Yes IF you set the Glidos up to what is Listed in the First Aid package ( For Rb3d ) the game seems to be Fairly Smooth... It constantly and with certain success kept Trashing my Xp machine again and again... Not at first but after a week had small problems like Unable to Connect to the Internet and Programs hanging up upon opening. Only to name the most common... Vista the verdect is still out yet... The Item that Grabbed MY Attention was Abacus Mission WW1 Combat Add-On to FS-X or FS 2004... A trip to www.google.com (http://www.google.com) and typing in Mission WW1 Combat will take you to the very same Information I ran across... I hate to Pre-Order a Non-Shooting type Add-On as that will be more of a aggravation than not having it at all. As a sidelight I like to WW1 Fly for FUN... Shooting Yes but wanna have Fun... If not why bother to Shoot and fly at all... :applause: Team Games are what really grab my attention now. Yes again right now Rb3D is the Best Most Rendered and probably Most accurate Historic wise game on the net... Made that way by the Many of hard working Gamin Community Software savvy folks out there :wiggle: I ain`t one of those... There are NO Ratings as to this Mission WW1 Combat Add-On as yet and the reply I just received from some little girl at a Terminal in a office was a typical $1 answer... ie Answer`s $1... Correct Answer`s $3... :isadizzy: We know that FS-X and FS-2004 are Non Shooting conditions and it kinda stands to reason that Mission WW1 Combat IF run on FS-X or FS-2004 would also be a Non Shooting version. Now for sure that`s a slap in the Face with a Title as WW1 Combat... As it stands now I am presented with 2 Options :stop: Buy the Pig and install and see... Or wait till After the Posted Release date of 1/22/08 and read someone else`s comments and ratings... Hate to throw $30 to $35 ( With Ship ) down the tube and get a Non barking dog... Cheers :kilroy:

:wavey: Little Abacus girl at a desk somewhere at the Company said she got answer right from Production Manager. Now again I looked at the account and see that a $1 Pre-Order charge has been logged to the Account :stop: Never heard of these things before... I would hope that this Is a Pre-Charge and not a $1 answer ( ie $1 Answer $3 Correct Answer )
Anyway the response she gave me on about the 5th back and forth was that YES Mission WW1 Combat IS a SHOOTER Type game. Now I have No other information than that and can`t respond as to How FS-X or FS-2004 can support a Shooting game... :censored: I can only hope for a decent product now as I bit the Bullet and Pre-Ordered the Piggy for around $40 with 2 day ship and tax. Don`t know if can post prices here but was only trying to give the WW1 folks a Idea of what they would be looking at price wise. :173go1: Abacus rendering has been quality in the past Add-On`s they have marketed and one can only hope that will be the case again. So that`s the latest from Lake-Woe-Be-Gone where the Women are Strong and the Men are Pretty. Cheers :applause:
