I have an ATAPI cd rom drive by MSI. I use it mainly for my Soldier of Forture game. All of a sudden the drive now does not show a disc. I get the insert disc message even with the disc in place. When I click on my shortcut icon for the game the drive light comes on, the game starts to load, I get the loading screen showing the various items being loaded and then it cuts out, screen goes blank for a second and then comes back with the message insert disc.

It works in my cdrw drive. So I'm wondering if my cdrom drive is shot or if there is something I can take care of. There is something that is shutting it down after it starts to load. My device manager shows that everything is working ok even though it's not.

IT might be a driver issue. Try removing the driver and reinstalling it.

sometimes the reader gets dirty, I have fixed a many cd roms by using my air compressor at about 35 lbs pressure and simply blowing it out, hell the way I figure, it can't hurt, it already doen not work.

Tried both suggestions and they didn't work, so I guess on top of everything else I will have to be looking at a new CD rom drive. I was planning to put off a new motherboard and CPU, Memory for a little while. Now I've got to do some more price checking, cause when one thing goes the next problem generally ain't far behind:mad: :)

New questions..............

Is the PCI express GeForce 6600GT/128 or for that matter any of the new PCI express x 16 video cards faster than the same card for an AGP slot. The reason I ask is that most of the motherboards I have been looking at have PCI express slots and no AGP slot. I have an older slower computer that I could put my GeForce Ti-4200 in if I pick up a PCI express board and video card. Looks like the PCI express is a little cheaper than the AGP in some cases.

I am going to have to get Win XP Pro to replace the OS that the guy put in this computer. Would it be reasonable to get another small hard drive to install the new OS on and then use my 2 existing 40g HD's (7200rpm Maxtors) for FS9 & CF2 on one and my regular programs on the other. Or is this asking for trouble.

Been looking for a CD ROM drive to replace my bad one. So far it looks like everything is a combination CD DVD burner.

I now have an Antec 350W Power Supply and I assume I will have to have a bigger one with the new motherboard and CPU anyway. AT least 500W ??

I've been burning cd's tonight copying all my good stuff just in case the rest of this outfit starts crapping out.
