WASHINGTON (AP) — Safety and industry officials worry that there will be more deadly airline accidents traced to pilots who have lost their hands-on instincts as planes become ever more reliant on automation to navigate crowded skies.
The airline industry says hundreds of people have died over the past five years in 51 "loss of control" accidents in which planes stalled during flight or got into unusual positions that pilots could not correct. In some cases, pilots made the wrong split-second decision, with catastrophic results.
One airline captain, Rory Kay, says pilots get so little time to manually fly planes that they're "forgetting how to fly." Kay is co-chairman of a Federal Aviation Administration committee on pilot training.
Regulations that require greater reliance on computerized flying are helping spur the trend.

Yeah I get perturbed at the frequent... "....So the plane flys itself right? Takeoffs and landings too..?" They are baffled when they find that is not the case.

In all the 100's of times I've gotten a V1 cut in the sim, and the no-**** for real one I had with a catastrophic compressor failure, I've yet to do it with the autopilot on. Let's ask Captain Rory how much he flys... maybe he fly's as much as Captain Randy Babbit. Captain Babbit hasn't flown an airliner since Eastern Airlines went out of business, but still goes by the title of Captain anyway when he talks to the media.

Watching that program, "SECONDS FROM DISASTER"when I can get it,it shows repeatedly ,that in many instances of some failier,other than wings falling off..some pilots,of course not all,do have an instant reactions in recalling what should be an instinctive response..they call it pilot error,or blame the manuals, gotta blame some one...An example of a captain ,reacting to years of training was Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger...and maybe the opposite was the Buffalo crash,here Captain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_in_command) Marvin Renslow,
The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the captain's inappropriate response to the activation of the stick shaker, which led to an aerodynamic stall from which the airplane did not recover. this list is too long to relate here!..Ice ,speeds,and stuff!

Two line pilots,world of experience apart........however with all the planes in the air world over,day and night,most all captains perform flawlessly...and its no news,but ,one crash,and because of the drama of it,and the large loos of lives,does become world news as it should.

This captain,writing these things,has to be taken seriously.He has credentials! maby not on the Sim,but respectful.......

When ever I board a commercial plane,I try to take note of the Captain whose my life is in his hands,if he got gray hair??/I feel safe. The GREY BEARDS have been around a while! They do not smile too much...its the trip on their mind1But if the Captain he is young ,handsome,smiling, ,oozing opposite sex appeal,I figure he may have other things on his mind...especially when he greets the young Girls..PERSONALLY!...thats when I start reviewing things in my life......<label for="rb_iconid_15">http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/images/icons/icon28.gif</label>
