That is an AMAZING story...I have saved it for one of my classes this coming year. Thank you so much!

The other story I always mention is the Franz Stigler - Charlie Brown encounter. The advice that Franz received while in North Africa exemplifies that many Germans were soldiers and officers only, just like their opposing counterparts.

He was told by one of his commanders in North Africa that "You are fighter pilots first, last, always. If I ever hear of any of you shooting at someone in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself."

Stigler said about the B-17, "To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down."

It would seem one of the few places there was a semblance of chivalry in WWII is the Med/West Euro air theatres.
