It's a piston rod holder from the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine of a Mk.5b Spitfire built by Westlands in 1942. This aircraft, AR330, served with 124, 111, 312 and 66 Squadrons RAF. It crashed and was written off on 27 May 1944.
This wonderful item has been donated to the charity SCOPE, so all money paid for it will go towards helping children with cerebral palsey. They have asked me to see if there are any aviation memorabilia collectors who would like to make an offer. I believe it is worth about £50 ($100 or €75). Purchase will include a letter of authentication from the Curator of Newark Air Museum, detailing the aircraft's history. I'm afraid the rod holder is quite heavy and you will have to add postage!
This is a one-off opportunity to own a little piece of History and an iconic item of engineering, attractively mounted and beautiful in its own right. Hoping to hear from big-hearted, charitable aviation collectors...:wavey:
If you are at all interested or have any thoughts (like that I'm not asking nearly enough for it!), do reply here or send me a PM. We're hoping that this unique donation to charity will find a good home where it will be truly appreciated. Your chance to acquire an increasingly-rare, fascinating and historic object.
