Gauge indent?

By any chance does anyone know what that Gauge is? Its in a Sopwith Strutter on the right side.

I would have to say it's the engine tachometer. Tachs of the era were mechanical and I've seen several pictures of WWI and 20's era tachs with the input shaft entering the case through the side and slightly off-center . Take a look at the Jones Tach on this page (third gauge down the page) to see a similar setup.

In the pic you posted, the silver "mount" below the gauge and going into the panel is the right-angle adapter for the drive cable.
