Plastic fires are nasty, my department responded to a fire at a sunglasses factory, and all that plastic in there put off some highly toxic fumes as well as burning forever it seemed.

We had a nasty plastics fire in our town a few years back when my wife was working as the local fire dispatcher. Half the town had to be evacuated due to heavy smoke and several hundred acres of adjacent crops were lost due to the contamination from fall-out.

Ours burned for several days and the consensus of opinion from several fire dept sources was 'let 'er burn' as that was the safest way of dealing with the problem. Apparently the higher combustion temperatures mean less harmful chemicals are released into the air (in terms of volume not nastiness).
