Road racing started on bicycles long before the automobile was made to race. But in 1903, automobiles competed in what was to become "The Race to Death". It permanently ended true road racing for automobiles due to the carnage of racers and spectators. From thence on, automobile racing would have to be held on closed circuit courses.
