Dave Bruton, one of Ireland's top display pilot's (who is based at my local airfield EIAB) had a very lucky escape on Sunday last. He was flying a display at Foynes in Limerick,in a recently restored Steen Skybolt when ,for reasons as yet unknown, the top wing of the aircraft disintegrated! He immediately declared a Mayday and was vectored for an emergency landing at nearby EINN. Dave, realising that he probably wouldn't make it that far elected to carry out an immediate ,and successful, landing in a nearby field instead.

I had a Lazy Ace R/C Bipe that had a 6'-2" wingspan and weighed about 15 lbs. That lost the top wing in flight. They get used to having both wings and don't like it a bit when they lose one.
I was able to pancake it in without too much damage but it never flew again.
It broke the spar in the top wing.
