Spectacular but no biggie.
Karl Reindler received second degree burns to his hands and Steve Owen only ended up bruised and shaken.

"As Karl Reindler continues to recover in hospital from yesterday's fiery crash, the Brad Jones Racing team has already started work to get a Fair Dinkum Sheds Commodore on the grid at Winton Raceway.“We have another body shell back in the workshop, which we’ll build up into a car for Winton,” team co-owner Kim Jones told BigPond Sport.
“The guys back in the workshop started work on it first thing this morning.
“It’s two or three days until the Perth car gets home, but there’s very little on that car that we’ll actually use.”
With Winton just three weekends away Kim Jones said the team will wait to see whether Karl recovers from his burns before recruiting another driver to fill in.
“There will definitely be a Fair Dinkum Sheds car at Winton,” said Jones.
“Whether Karl is able to drive it or not, I don’t know yet. I would like to think he is, but the hands take a hell of a hiding changing gears and even hands in good condition end up with blisters.

“Burns can be quite difficult to heal, so we’ll have a look when Karl gets out of hospital and see what action we take from there.”
Fox Sports reports that Reindler will be seen by renowned Australian burns specialist Dr Fiona Wood as his recovery begins.
Paul Morris Motorsports face a similar situation to get the #49 VIP Petfoods Commodore ready for Steve Owen.
The car will arrive back at the team’s Gold Coast workshop on Wednesday, and they will immediately assess the extent of the structural damage.
The team has a spare car at the workshop but they may elect to borrow a chassis, just as they did for the Albert Park 400 when Owen drove Andrew Thompson’s Fujitsu VE Commodore.
The next championship event is at Winton Raceway from May 20 -22."

Bloody good weekend of racing.

I didn't think those fuel cells were supposed to blow up like that...pretty hard hit though, they both got lucky.

"stop drop and roll" i would imagine...when someone is on fire you are supposed to stop running ( running fuels the fire with air) drop to the ground and roll...putting the fire out...watching that...i was yelling at the screen stop drop and roll and then the marrsah had him do it...i went "whew"...the absolutly worset thing they could do is squirt him with an extingusire...that would then get in his lungs and also contaminate any burn skin he allready has and increase his injuries....

i know i drop these little bits of slef proclaimed nuggetts of gold at inopertune times...but this crach reminds me of my hobby stock driving days.....

some of the cars werent built real well...and the placement of the fuel tanks..most of which were just welded steel boxes ,lucky not to leak in th first place, and they were to be placed under the rear package tray above the rear end housing..which i personlly didnt like..what if you took a hard hit and the housing came up and hit the tank??....

well one night i was behind a slow car,he was 2 laps down and i was leading,i was litterally pushing him along the back stretch as my second place car had me pinned down behind him,i was losing the lead and was not happy....i saw the back of his car leap into the air...like he hit a bump and then i spun him into the inflied,,( was more a mutual thing..he turned and i pushed) but right then i heard a crunch and the nose of my car boounced and i was throoughly soaked in fluid...at first i thought it was radiatior water...but then my car exploded in fire...i just hit the kill switch and started bailing oout,,his fuel tank had fallen out..fell down through the X bars in his "trunk" and i ran it over bursting it and covering myself and my car in gas

i used to have a photo of the car on fire with me bailing out...but the woman i almost married,,who was metally ill as it turned oout...distroyed most of my things,,most of my memories and keepsakes....

Standard driver training Ferry.
And it was Karl's race engineer who 'rolled' him.
Many of the members of the other teams jumped the wall and assisted with their own equipment as well.
The fuel cells are pretty sound but I doubt anything would stand up to a 37G impact!!
And of course, fuel pumps, the swill pot and a couple of batteries compounded the problem.
Next season the regulations call for the cell to be located ahead of the rear end and totally isolated.
