Looks superb so far. This one will be a real keeper. :)

PS. It occur's to me that the Harrier bears a striking resemblence to the Messerschmitt Me 163. Almost like a grown up version. I wonder if the 163 influenced the Harrier designer?

A bit OT, but is there any plans by UKMIL or anyone else to do an updated FRS1?

As far as GR7s go, though, this looks superb!

Thats a long nose. For larger radar?

delta_lima
May 16th, 2011, 10:04
Thats a long nose. For larger radar?

That's the second Sea Harrier model - FA2. Obviously, it's a WIP, but he's showing us a preview of what that model will look like.

The first (FRS1) Sea Harrier had a Ferranti Blue Fox radar. The second Sea Harrier (FA2) was designed around the more advanced Blue Vixen radar. The larger antenna, receiver, and transmitter - as well as all the attendant processor, controller, and power hardware required a much flarger orward fuselage/radome space. Bear in mind, that Blue Vixen unit was designed to support the AIM-120 AMRAAM.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I never liked the look of the FA2 - but from an objective historical standpoint, it earned a very vital place in naval aviation history. It showed that you could give a comparatively small aircraft a very powerful all weather look down/shoot down capability. Coupled with it's obvious V/STOL capabilities, it gave the FAA a unique, if shortlived flexible multi-purpose fighter capability. Curious that the Indian navy is working to give their FRS1s a similar capability ... all other air arms (Spain, USMC, Italy, Thailand) have concentrated more on the Harrier's ground-focused roles ....

Here's a quick summary of the Sea Harrier history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Aerospace_Sea_Harrier Wiki can be very superficial and occasionally inaccurate - but that should help you understand the Sea Harrier a bit better.

Mate thats stunning, will Ukmil members have any perks or not? :wavey:

One thing I Beg though, can we have a British pilot in the VC too please, I know it's a rivet counting thing which I normally hate but it would look so much better!!

Those textures and models are stunning though! Really can't wait for this!

Odd ... I don't think I've ever seen a "pilot in the VC" that looked good. I mean, in a fighter, that's just a pair of arms and legs ... I wouldn't want those arms blocking my view of the panel(s). Bad enough when some developers model the 'stick in such a way that blocks the view to a key instrument. The Iris Phantom had this, blocking the view of the primary compass, as I recall. Yet, I can understand why not modelling the stick would be a drawback. But a VC body? Really?

The otherwise awesome FS9 Alphajet had arms/legs, and frankly, I think it looked awful. I think it's telling that in most, if not all leading edge projects in both freeware and payware (Etendard, Wilco Harrier, A2A, Piglet, Piper, Vertigo, Real Air, etc.) the pilot (as seen from the VC) is never present. Too many complex shapes and movements to make it look worthy of the effort to make - and impact to performance - of including it, IMHO.

Or am I missing something here ... ?

peter12213
May 16th, 2011, 17:02
Mate I don't mean in the VC sorry, I mean just for the external model with regard to the helmet and oxy mask, because the one depicted is the American HGU55p and the MBU12p mask where ours is the Alpha700/MK10B and the P/Q type oxy mask which is completely different to anything else harrier pilots wear!

Delta_lima couldn't agree more with regard to pilots in the VC, as said thats not what I really meant mate, hate them here too bud!

Aah - now that makes more sense. Indeed, correct oxygen masks and helmets is important! Gaffer has an eye for accuracy (as the bypass doors discussion on the Wilco Harrier showed) so I am sure when released, the'll be good.

Cheers bud:ernae:

Will these models have specular maps and bump maps? Will a repaint kit be 'club members only' ?

Very nice modelling btw :-)

UKMIL

And yes, as normal rules apply, the paintkit will be CLUB MEMBERS only. They have to have some perks! we give away such detailed models for free, so the paying members need to have something:salute:

Reason I asked for the spec maps is that I feel the model seems a bit too dull. The old NATO green/Lichen Green and Dark Sea Grey/Camouflage Grey always seemed to have a slight sheen.

Desaturate the (repainted) texture and save it as a texture. Quick to do and works for me.

Whooahh ! Maybe you also do something about the alpha-channel?

Seriously, there are many ways of doing specs. Most people darken the RGB and add an alpha channel with a dark RGB value (70-70-70) for a matt scheme or a brighter RGB value (200-200-200) for a semi gloss scheme.
Personally I work with a greyscale RGB, completely desaturated. An RGB value on the spec texture of 77-77-77 and an alpha value of 204-204-204 gave my grey schemed A-7s a nice sheen. It does, however, matter a bit how the materials are set in the model. An RGB value of 25-25-25 on the main spec texture and a value of 128-128-128 on the alpha gives you a much matter appearance. Just a thought.

Stunning.... sure would like to see this morphed to the McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing)) AV-8B Harrier II ....hint hint.. :icon_lol:
I still have issues trying to get it to lift straight up, I have the nozzles pointed down and with fuel at 50%. It wants to accelerate
at about 80 knots in a sort of short take off fashion; I can't seem to get it to perform like your videos (liftoff/hover landing.) But it is a challange.

I was having the "hovering issues" on your older current Released model, not your new one on this

UKMIL
May 26th, 2011, 11:39
ah

well hovering with that, is always down to 2 areas

first, a corrupt FSCUIP installation

second, too much fuel, you need to be below around 20% fuel
