I agree thats just too hard to pick. I'd be hard to go with 3 in each music genre.

I'll go with my 3 favorite, most powerful musical experiences, "Live" concert albums, for me. (Not in order by the way)...

Michael W. Smith - "Worship"
Cheap Trick - "Cheap Trick At Budokan - The Complete Concert" (Enhanced Version)
Johnny Cash - "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison"

wow! that's a tough one!
for me, the 3 best are not my 3 favorites. (greatest hits albums don't count)

my 3 favorites would be :

Judas priest's point of entry

rush permanent waves

megadeth peace sells, but who's buying?

the 3 best, would be: (imo)

i could only pick rock albums because if i added in all the other styles of music i could never stick to just 3 albums. if i picked 3 from each style it still would have been like writing war and peace

Jimi hendrix are you experienced?

rush permanent waves

sack blabbath paranoid

I think I'll take one from Column A, one from Column B...:costumes:

I'll see your 'Dark Side of the Moon' and '2112' and raise you a 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band'...and about a thousand honorable mentions, as well. :friday:

Heh, heh - love the video to Bill Cosby's 'Himself.' It's been playing on one of the cable channels lately and is still funny after all these years, but is poignant when you think about what happened to his son.

Tough one for me since I have soooooooo much music and very broad tastes.

First would be AC/DC Back in Black - this album changed my life my Soph year in high School. I didn't even listen to music of my own back then and one day at a small cafe, the first cords of Back n Black came out of the speaker above me and something inside of me clicked and I was a sponge for music right after that.

Bon Jovi - first album. this one lead me into joining my first band in 84. My first big influence, both musically and visually since I looked and sounded like him back then, LOL

lastly would be Survivor - Vital Signs: Based on what I had been through in lots of relationships and from the years of being a musician, I could relate to every song on the CD and it helped me get through some tough times when I first moved to Dallas.

Honorable mentions
Whitesnake - Whitesnake
Poison - look what the cat dragged in
Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengence
Metallica - Ride the lightning
Enya - Watermark

and on and on......

"The White Album" - The Beatles
"Crosby Stills and Nash" - Their first album

I don't think I can pick only three albums! Some of my first are still favourites of mine though:

AC/DC - let there be rock

Iron Maiden - The number of the beast and 7th son of a 7th son

Others that deserve a spot in the top ten because of their influence on my taste in music are (Though my opinion can change every day!) :

Pantera - Vulgar display of power
Opeth - Deliverance/Blackwater park
Machine Head - Burn my eyes
Sepultura - Chaos A.D.
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Life of Agony - River runs red

Three greatest is too subjective, but three favorites that come to mind being played the most over the years are:

1) U2 - October (The Edge is my favorite guitar player)
2) Echo & The Bunnymen - Porcupine
3) R.E.M. - Murmur

Others: Cactus World News - Urban Beaches, The Church - Hindsight, The Police - Regatta De Blanc, Rush - Moving Pictures or maybe Subdivisions? (Geddy Lee was a big influence on my bass playing early on)

Ferry and I would have a blast at the pub methinks... ask Stiz haha

man my fav albums in no particular order...

*Megadeth - The System Has Failed (dont give me the megadave rap :P even if some argue this is a solo project how many people can do what he did with this album?)

*Iron Maiden - Powerslave (Aces High is unbeatable, Back to THe Village and Flash of The Blade are insane, anyone has the Maiden Heaven Record? its a must!)

*Slayer - Reign in Blood ('nuff said)

my 3 fav live recordings

*Motorhead - No Sleep At All
*Megadeth - Rude Awakening
*Iron Maiden - Live at Donington

man, there are so many records i absolutely love and couldnt live without (serious!) im a huge music junkie haha

i like a lot of (very)early metallica, even up to master of puppets but i'd like it even more if the whole Dave thing hadnt happened, and if Cliff...well you know.

anyone here into Power Metal? Angra, Stratovarius, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica... man those guys are nuts!

compare angra's Carry On with any of its contemporary released from other artists... or even modern stuff :applause:

Ferry and I would have a blast at the pub methinks... ask Stiz haha

:d :d Even though metal and hard rock takes up most of my CD space, I do have some more 'mellow' music like the Golden Earring, Weezer, Jeff Healey and Gary Cooper.

*Megadeth - The System Has Failed

I like some of the older Megadeth stuff but the last few albums are not on my playlist anymore. The 'Rude Awakening' live album's pretty good though.

*Iron Maiden - Powerslave (Aces High is unbeatable, Back to THe Village and Flash of The Blade are insane, anyone has the Maiden Heaven Record? its a must!)

I have forty CD's (And that includes the six CD tin box set!), eight LP's and two DVD's. Saw them play live twice. My favourite band of all time. :d

I did use to like Metallica, but looking back now on the old albums, and comparing it to some of the modern stuff I'm not that impressed anymore (Even though 'Death Magnetic' was pretty good). If you want to hear some very good trash metal try listening to a band like Trivium.

yea, me too... you can throw benni bennassi or w/e hisname is in there too... along with a whole lot others haha (lou reed too:P)

yea man older megadeth for sure... i saw them for the first time when i was 13, touring in Bogota, Friedman, DeGraso Elefson and Dave... a year prior to the date i saw Metallica touring behind their garage inc record... (i much prefer them live) i have seen Metallica 2 other times, but both here in Canada... not the same (you know what i mean)

what did you think of the last megadeth album? (o and did you know that a new one is coming?) o and chris broderick is nuts!

mine too! (with a couple others.. haha) but man, im jealous :p i can only beat you in having seen maiden thrice :P brave new world tour, amolad and somewhere back in time.... i saw paul di'anno once too... it was ok.

yea man trivium is nuts, i like their covers too, check out master and iron maiden... and i completely agree with the metallica bit... i think that two things really affected metallica's potential... the firing of dave and the death of cliff... i think kirk is fast and all, but at the same time, dave is more technical and creative (IMO) with riffs and all that... i play guitar so the difference can be felt too haha

Reading what Ferry and Phil are posting brings back some great memories. loudest concert ever was Motorhead at Cardis in Houston, my ears rang for weeks afterwards.

Best concert experience, Iron Maiden/Wasp/Metallica/Armored Saint in Houston. I DJed for college radio and my partner and I scored 3rd row for the Powerslave tour at the Summit. Same night was Metallica/AS at Cardis and the local rock station was giving out seats/bus passes to head to the Maiden show from the club and back again. I scored 7th row and bus passes from them, sold the 7th row seats for $100 each, saw the show, came back, saw and met Metallica (Cliff) and even got hooked up with a waitress, what a night!!

yep, prefer early Metallica over the new stuff as well. Last time I saw them was master of Puppets with Ozzy, great show.

AC/DC is still my fav, but with Bon Scott, would have loved to have seen him play. new CD blows :banghead:

some good stuff there
- iron maiden , nothing that they did tops their "live after death" live album to me . i don't care much for what they have done after that .
- metallica , the cliff burton era was their best by far
- trivium , saw them live a bit over a year ago during the family values tour and they definitely impressed me a lot
- megadeth , "peace sells" and "rust in peace" are my favorite albums of theirs
- slayer , love that band . i have yet to hear a bad album by them ... and i can say the same for motorhead
- and also am crazy for some of the bands mentioned like pantera , nightwish , machine head , sepultura ( i still prefer roots to chaos AD ) , early fear factory , life of agony , ramones , sisters of mercy .
other bands not mentioned that to me also deserve a special mention include , among many others , the misfits , switchblade symphony , the exploited , genitorturers , ministry , wumpscut , older theater of tragedy albums and christian death ( the rozz williams era ) .

and my best concert experience was between gwar ( they really have an incredible onstage show and their moshpit is the best ) and alice cooper ( saw him 5 years ago and he played over two hours of requests , that was amazing ).

many of you here have awesome taste! there was one post i won't say who, that made me think... ewww

that said, it really is hard to pick just 3 all arounders.
if you look in my collection you'll see metal, for sure, but also you'll see punk, classic rock, southern rock, oldies, country, blues, swing/big band, some jazz, and even classical performed by the LSO. there are also a few who don't fit in a category, for example, primus/claypool

- slayer , love that band . i have yet to hear a bad album by them ... and i can say the same for motorhead

I don't have anything with those two bands to be honest; Imho Slayer's old stuff sounds dated, and so does there new work. They headlined a major festival a couple of years ago here, but I left even before their show started. I was more interested in the other bands playing that day; LoA, Nightwish, Soulfly, Ill Nino, Dimmu Borgir and Children of Bodom.
Same thing goes for Motorhead; too simple and I can't stand Lemmy's voice.

I lovew Ministry too! Saw them for the first time when they performed on their farewell tour this summer and was completely blown away! One of the loudest and most aggressive shows I've ever seen.

My tastes are all over the place....

Studio Albums...

#1 Rush, Moving Pictures. (Got me hooked on Rush)
#2 Boston, Boston (I had this on 8-track people!!!)

Live Albums...

#1 Little Feat, Live at Neon Park (Just plain good foot stompin music)
#2 Rush, Exit Stage Left (I've been to see Rush in concert three times... Nothin better Live. Neil Pert is the Lord of the Drumkit)
#3 Kansas, Two for the show (Great stuff)

Honorable mentions....

Anything live by Jimmy Buffett, Journey, Rush, Kansas, Alman Brothers, Van Halen (Sammy) etc...

Throw in some Joe Satriani and I'm set.

Hey All,

Looks like Heavy Metal/Rock rules here.

Not in the real world...

Country/Bluegrass RULES! Heavy Metal/Rock DROOLS! as my kids used to say before their minds got corrupted by the radio and their peers. :costumes:

Top 3

1) Alan Jackson - Drive - (this one has everything on it - Alans' best ever)
2) Ricky Skaggs - Brand New Strings (bluegrass meets celtic meets country - sheer genius - best Ricky has ever done)
3) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Lynyrd Skynyrd (great groundbreaking country music - I define country broadly to include Southern Rock - besides how often did you see Ronnie Vanzant perform without a cowboy hat? :costumes:)

If there were a top 4 I'd be adding a blues album.

So, what are the criteria for selecting these top three albums??

Is it just what we like, or is it something that was groundbreaking?

Dave Brubek -- Time Out (defined modern Jazz -- my opinion obviously)

Stan Getz and Joad Gilberto -- Getz/Gilberto (at the height of the Beatles euphoria, Stan Getz and Joad Gilberto started a whole seperate movement)

The Mavericks -- What a Crying Shame (back to rockabilly during the height of grunge -- take that Nirvana!!)

The Clash -- London Calling (do I really need to say anything?)

Hootie and the Blowfish -- cracked rear view (C'mon, you know you liked it...everyone likes Hootie... it's like bacon)

Santana -- Supernatural (for odd reasons I always think of Kenya when I hear any of this...it was the only music we had in our rental car)

Matchbox 20 -- Yourself or Someone Just like You ( I really wanted to hate this group...but I couldn't)

Warren Zevon -- Excitable Boy ('nuff said -- check out the Wallflowers version of Lawyers, Guns and Money -- you can google the David Letterman performance on Youtube)

The Black Crowes -- Shake Your Money Maker (This and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion really showed what Southern Rock could be after Skynard and the Allman Bros were gone...unfortunately these guys couldn't handle the pressure)

Miles Davis -- Kind of Blue (actually my favorite work of his is "My Funny Valentine" which isn't on this album, but this is my favorite album from him)

Start the movie thread now.....

That's the problem with my collection. I said Dark Side of the Moon earlier, but other than that, it's all a toss up and depends on what I'm in the mood for at the time. It's like asking to pick which of your kids are your favorite.

If I was to be dropped on a tropical island for a year, with only a stereo and 3 albums for musical entertainment, which 3 would I choose? HMMMM.

In no order:

1] Big Brother And The Holding Company - "Cheap Thrills" : Joplin at her best.

2] Jimi Hendrix Experience - "Electric Ladyland" : Just lay back and groove.

3] The Beatles - "The White Album" : A timeless classic.

I would probably try to sneak in a few more : honorable mention, if you will:

4] Led Zeppelin - Their first album : Gawd Almighty!

5] Santana - "Moonflower" : Carlos shows us how it's done.

6] The Stones - "Let It Bleed" : You can't always get what you want...

AND... some rare ones, just cuz I like 'em:

7] Buddy Miles - "Electric Church" : Produced by J. Hendrix, and it sounds like it.

8] Grand Funk - "Live Album" : Atlanta 1970.. old school, big amp R&R.

9] Walter Carlos - "Clockwork Orange" : Bach, Beethoven at their electronic best.

Lol... I've probably dated myself with this selection, but as a wise man once said:

"Just 'cause there's snow on the roof, it don't mean the pilot light's out!"

Kind of Blue
Paul Chambers: Bass
Jimmy Cobb: Drums

If you're only going to have one Miles Davis album, Kind of Blue is the one to have. I could never think of a 'Three Greatest', or even a 'Three Favorite' albums. The Rolling Stone magazine 100 Greatest issue always irritates me. One thing I do have to say. All you guys going to these loud (overamplified, in my opinion) metal shows: WEAR EAR FILTERS. I had buzzing in my right ear for years from just standing next to a 50 watt amp, and that ear is still VERY sensitive to noise. I can't make you do it, but you've been told...

Well, seeing as Radiohead is the greatest band in the world, I'll rate my top three albums by them.

"Kid A" (an experimental album done right)
"Amnesiac" (along the same lines as Kid A [would be first, but Kid A was the trendsetter])
4-way tie between "OK Computer", "The Bends", "Hail to the Thief", and "In Rainbows" ( I knew I couldn't do it LOL)

Notable runner up albums are

Muse-"Absolution"
Coldplay-"Rush of Blood to the Head" & "X and Y"
mewithoutYou- Every album by them ever (Author's note, this band is the most lyrically talented and profound musical group ever formed...recommended listen!)

Can't believe that no one has any Tom Petty on their list.

I saw Tom with Steve Winwood opening this past summer. One of the best shows I've ever attended. Winwood opened with a 65 minute set, then Tom and the Heartbreakers played about an hour at which point Winwood joined them for 3 songs(Mr. Fantasy, Gimme Some Lovin, and Can't Find My Way Home:woot:). After that Tom and and the boys played for another hour. One of his encore songs was Van Morrison's Mystic Eyes which was INCREDIBLE. Worth every penny for the ticket, if you have the chance, see this band live.
