The Fairchild Super 71 was truly a unique airplane (Peculiar?) It was an all-aluminum plane which first flew in 1934. Originally it had the cockpit behind the wing ala the Northrop Gamma series. Only one was produced with this configuration as the test pilots really complained about the lack of visibility. Three more were made with a more standard cockpit arrangement in front of the wing, the Super 71p. I found 3 views of the first, but not the 71p.
This plane looks like it could have been the "Beaver" of the '30's, but it didn't catch on with anyone. I like it so am proceeding with the design. This is a very early look.

Reminds me of the Schneider Cup (floater) air racers of the 1930s. Pretty cool!

When i saw your picture, it tripped something in my brain and got me going on one of my insane searches i get into doing every now and then. it reminded me of another plane i'd seen in a book, and i just couldnt figure it out.. Going back over all my books ( not a large library but ) i fonally located it in an old time life book about flying the mail.. i know this plane is a biplane and the cockpit is open, but the lines are strikingly similar..

Nice. One question is it an amphibian or floats only?

Nice. One question is it an amphibian or floats only?

All my reference data shows it on floats, only. There was (is?) a vacuform model of it which has it on ski's, but no wheels.

Thanks for the kind words. Now that you mention it I haven't modeled a plane later than the early 50's for several years!

Put Put I think you have really excelled yourself with the selection on this one. It truly is unique for the era!

And I think those test pilots were definitely onto something. The view out of the cockpit would be truly horrendous. Bleddyn's photo gives an exellent example of just how poor we can expect it to be. Really looking forward to flying this aeroplane. :)

Yeah it would have been hideously constrictive. These two are good views as well.

And a shot of the RCAF variant with the cockpit moved forward of the wing.

From an aesthetic point of view it ruins the lines completely :icon_lol:

**Edit** - Is this info of any use Put Put? If not just ignore ;)

The drawings are the same as I am using; I got them from Bob's Air Docs. There is one picture I don't have-------Thanks. I am fascinated by the fact that although there was only one Super 71 with the rear cockpit, every picture I have seems to have a different strut arrangement. Some of my pics are from a museum restoration which might not be true to life. I have settled on what I'm going to do and I will just ignore the rivet (strut?) counters.

Leave the rivet counters to us staff.. We'll do everything we can to help you out..
I'm hoping to pick up the Gamma for my birthday in May, and fully intend to have this one as well when its finished..
