You've heard of overclocking your CPU for improved performance, and have probably done it already. But what about your video card? If you want to improve your system's performance for FSX these guides will show you how to get started, and shows what overclocking can do for nVidia and ATI cards.
I have many people asking how they can improve the gaming experience. I tell them that overclocking their video card can give them the improved performance they crave. WARNING: I recommend that you proceed with great caution unless you are wealthy and don't mind buying a new video because of an experiment gone bad. Of most of you will give that "OMG should I do this look" and then proceed to overclock your video card anyway. So I’m writing this to help everyone that wants to learn how to overclock their video card. Their are several guides for various programs. For now we will cover only two guides that apply to somewhat vendor approved overclocking programs
To master this you must first know how and why overclocking works. When the cores of the card are made, they are run at a safe speed based on the quality yield of the cores. This isn’t the fastest the core can go, but the speed the manufacturers feel safe to run it at without putting out too much heat. It's the same idea with memory. The company ships the card set for perhaps 75 percent of its maximum capability. Most users are happy that their new card does fairly well, but there are a few who aren’t satisfied with this; they want to get that extra 10-25 percent out of the card. This is where overclocking comes into play.
In these two guides we will take a look into overclocking the video cards from Nvidia and ATI. There are a few different programs you could use to overclock the cards, but I will be using the easier ones just for this session and post more in-depth overclocking by some great freeware programs later. The author is well known for his GPU tweaking ability so I would copy and paste this information somewhere safe for the future. I think the author may also provides a pdf for his tweak guides.
