The pilot of this B737 landed at Hoedspruit (ex airforce base) in the dark and proceeded to take the wrong taxiway. Having arrived at a dead end he then attempted to turn around by reversing ( using reverse thrust). He misjudged and put the main gear off the concrete. It then rolled back down the bank. He then tried to climb out using full power. Of course with the engines that close to the ground they ingested grass, stones etc. If it wasn’t raining the jet blast would probably have set fire to the surrounding bush. The aircraft has been written off. The cost of the engines alone exceeds the insured value. No pax were on board at the time

I can't imagine someone trying to power out after sliding backwards down that embankment. You're right, dats a big OOPS!

Hoedspruit is a current Air Force Base.

Thanks for the correction Stratobat :) The above was a "copy & paste" job that I'd found on another forum. There are some more pics available of the damage and I'll post them later.

Eejit pilots. Reverse thrusting to turn...in the dark...and wet conditions...on an unfamiliar taxiway...
That just asks for a disaster. *Shakes head*

Poor 732.

What. An. Idiot...

I can only suppose that the PIC was in full Panic Mode when he attempted the impossible. Even had he somehow managed to force the a/c back up the embankment, he'd likely have overshot and simply dumped it down the opposite side...

...or, had he managed to accomplish the impossible, and then tried to takeoff with all that damage... :icon31:

I'm guessing the crew will have their wings clipped for good after this mess. Might be for the best considering their recklessness.

I can't help but notice that the landing light section of the wing looks similar to the front of an Audi A2...

Hey, this is in South Africa!!! :) :southafrica:

More to the point, that is one bit of stupid piloting. Sad about the loss of the aircraft. :isadizzy::pop4:
:icon_eek: I am still amazed at how the PIC managed to wreck that A/C!
