Is it safe to have WinXP Pro and Vista on the same drive as long as they are partitioned separately?

Yes you can have both on same drive, but beware you could corrupt the MBR (Master Boot Record). http://windowssecrets.com/2008/02/14/01-Make-your-computer-dual-boot-Vista-and-XP
Im assuming that you are installing vista on the other partition? Do you have a spare drive? That would be the safer way as all you have to do is unplug your main drive, then install the OS on the 2nd drive. once done all you need to do is plug back in main drive.
