Many many thanks to Mark Harper and the folks at Virtavia for releasing these as freeware. I have been longing to fly a great Phantom...and though the older ALphasim FS2002 Double Uglies have been doing the job...they pale in comparison to these new Phantoms.

I have the package installed already and have already crashed into the desert sands of Edwards AFB! In a full function 3D cockpit...full afterburner, nose dive into a cactus bed. It doesn't get any better than that!

...and ten minutes later pruning my orchard, scaring the whits out of my wife, cows and chickens... but by now, they're courting a pair of F-16's who are trying to crawl up their afterburners...Smoothie's not exaggerating, these boys are good! Very good!.

These Phantoms are wonderful....with the exception of No 13...the RF-4E Greek Riat one....for some reason, whenever I select that plane, every tree within a hundred miles turns into an FS4 style green blob and the ground texture looks like something a cow spit out twice. I can go down the list to the RF-4E Clean version, which uses the same texture as No 13 and it has no ill effect on my sim. None of the others do...just that No 13 Greek RIAT RF-4E.

Frame rates are a bit lower than what I normally see....18 to 19 FPS compare to 24 to 25 FPS. I have disabled the HUDs and Radars with no improvement. Will spend some time finding out what gauge(s) are behind the reduced frame rates on my system and replace them with ones I know are frame rate friendly.

Most likely there's a texture file in there that was saved as DXT1 and not DXT3 as was used in those days. Or it had mip maps turned on for some reason. The effect that has on the scenery was not an uncommon occurance. Load something else first and then go to external view. Then load No 13 and see if the scenery goes wanky after flying in spot view for a while and from all angles. If still good go inside the cockpit and look all over the VC (skipping the 2D panel because it is used in more than one aircraft). Then look at the scenery and see how it looks. If it is now messed up the problem is an interior texture. At least that will narrow down the files to be checked.

OH YEAH!!! Thank you Alphasim/Virtavia for a wonderful gift. I'm not a big military plane guy, but the F-4 is THE fighter of my youth. One of the great disapointments of my life is never having had the opportunity to see the Phantom II being by either The Blur Angels or The Thunderbirds. I got to sit in the cockpit of an Air Force F-4E at the EAFB open house, Arctic Thunder, once. And I even got to fly The EAFB Phantom II simulator once (for about 3 minutes), too. Now I can fly one whenever and wherever I want to. YIPPEE!!! LA

Just wondering if anyone did a VF-84 'Jolly Rogers' paint, or a VX-4 'Black Bunnies' paint for the Alpha Phantoms? I had models of both back in my childhood. I've seen these paints on other Phantoms (Ito's F-4 comes to mind) but so far no joy on the Usual Suspect sites (Flightsim, Simviation, et cetera)

Thank You Virtavia and Alphasim,
I am not a huge fan of the Jet-A burning warbirds in general, but the USAF and Lufwaffe F4s that rattled my childhood home in Germany nearly off it's foundation with their low passes are what sparked my passion for flight.
Now I get to go back in time and see what the view was like from their perspective :ernae:

Great idea for some good Luftwaffe schemes. I need to get over there and see what they've got. I liked watching Luftwaffe Phantoms over Jever and the Friesian Islands in North Germany several years ago. The pack does contain a late service livery for JG 71 "Richthofen that is nice, but I think that I'd like to fly a Cold War scheme.

The Blue Angel paint was done by John Detrick, I think it came from Flightsim.com. The 'Bicentennial' and the German 'Red Devil' paint are from Pierre Lheureux and can be found at Avsim.com, as can the last one ('The Saint') by Gus Robatto.

Many thanks to Virtavia for doing this. I worked the F-4 for about 5 years until we transitioned to the F-16. They were big, noisy, smelly, a heck of a lot of work and I enjoyed every second of those five years, lol.

Can't say much about their "Advanced Installer" though. It wanted to install into a location other than where my FS9 was installed, so I browsed to the correct location and hit "next". It installed ok, right where it wanted to the first time and not where I told it my FS9 was located. . .:salute:

As announced before, this is going to become RF-4E '35+62' of AG52 ("Panther" squad) in its early "Norm 72" camo (my favourite camo pattern!).

First sketches, but I think it's a start...

Cheers,
Markus.

btw: Has anyone figured out where the inner air intake (has to be black) is mapped to?

That looks excellent Markus ! Mike :jump:

Good Gosh! :icon_eek:

These are awesome textures to play with.
The mapping needs getting used to, but the result of the high resolution is quite breathtaking:

Great looking bird, Markus, and I definately agree with you there re texture quality. I'm playing with some US Marine and Navy hi-rez colors and the results are turing out quit nice.

According to the instructions the intake textures are in one of the "TEX" files. "TEX2" I think. files.

Thanks, guys!

And yes, the inner intake is located on tex2.
Funny thing about those Luftwaffe colour standards:
Although this area is said to be black, it appears some sort of light grey in several pics I've been collecting yet...

Looks good, Quax!
This later camo pattern (Norm 83A I presume?) is quite nice too, but I like Norm 72 better...

The refined code numbers were donated by a kind fellow over at vgaf.net, some decals and stencils are already corrected. This scheme looks rather as if I did something wrong while adjusting the green camo chunks (especially near to the 'hot ends'), but I can guarantee for its accuracy!

Cheers,
Markus.

Yep, I also like NORM72 much more. And the three repaints of NORM83 I have are sometimes not very "framefriendly" on my "old rig"... btw, isn't the Squadron emblem a little bit to large ??? :kilroy: Maybe only my opinion ???

Absolutely lovely Markus,
that is exactly what I was looking for.....sweeping the floor in my virtual hangar to make room for this one.

Sorry to be getting back so late in this thread... I purchased the Phantom Pack 2 from Alpha, back when it was Alpha Simulations. Much appreciated!

Dear folks,

I'm just preparing a cross-pond-hop to Goose Bay via Lossiemouth > Keflavik > Sondre Stromfjord (GAFTIC = German Air Force Training in Canada).
http://www.ag52-leck.de/gaftic.htm

The stock fuel values seemed a little odd to me:
Center 1225 gal
Left 315 gal
Right 315 gal
That's just 1885 gal.

Real world F-4F values are these:
intern: 1994 gal
external center: 600 gal
external left: 370 gal
external right: 370 gal
3334 gal all in all.

So my aircraft.cfg entry now comes up like this:

[fuel]
...
Center1 = 0, 0, 0, 1994, 43 //Rumpftanks
Center2 = 0, 0, -3, 600, 7 //mittlerer Aussentank
LeftMain = 0, -7, -3, 370, 7 //linker Aussentank
RightMain = 0, 7, -3, 370, 7 //rechter Aussentank

Ferry range is about 1600 nm at FL370 and Mach 0.9. That'll do...

Cheers,
Markus.
