Wow, thx for this great news! The best and the last MiG-21 was from Captain Sim for FS9 but it was long, long, long time ago! Model looks very well and procedures + futures! Yes, this news is very good for me, definitely.

Hey Mark why don´t you use a Proxy to avoid that problem???, you can turn it on and off as needed.

Hey Mark why don´t you use a Proxy to avoid that problem???, you can turn it on and off as needed.

I know, but I need to use a primary proxy that doesn't allow this. Oh well...
Looking forward the Mig21 anyhow!

Cheers,

I agree. Especially after someone sent me a revised FDE.

Also check out this video (sorry Mark and I hope I'm looking at the same model) with engine startup and towards the end, views of the different possible external configurations. Very pleased to see the wing tank option included.

New shots!

http://yoyosims.pl/Obrazki/MiG21MFpreview_2.jpg

More I recive from developer and put as in Today news on website http://yoyosims.pl/ . Sorry it is in Polish but You can see it, just click "TUTAJ" ("here"), or use a Google translator :). Im very excited to see MiG-21MF for FSX with all startup process. In FS9 we have small choice (but it exists) with MiG-21, in FSX ... no.

And for those who don't know, this is actually his second Mig-21, his first (the F-13 model) was released over a year ago. Works well in both FS9 and FSX, and has been superbly repainted by both Henry William and Zsolt Beleznay.

This should scratch your Mig itch going until the MF is released ... :)

variety as possible. Just glad Ivan released a paint kit of sorts after
my email requests. The MiG-21 has always been a favorite of mine.

While I absolutely adore the F13 does anyone else find it's flight characteristics really challenging to fly well, I mean for things like 4 point rolls and alike it really is a handful just hope this new one is equally or more fun to fly, eventually with this, the F13, the ALS Flanker, lotus L39 and the mig29 in development it really looks like eventually we ruscophiles are being catered for! Thank the lord!

The FS9 version is so good to fly in FSX that it greatly helps waiting for this native FSX version.
Ah yes, I feel sorry for those who fly with DX10 only :P

The FS9 version drinks its fuel faster than I drink my beer, the only way to fly it for long is to climb fast above 30.000 then set a cruise level flight there, without too much turns if possible.

This is not a plane, it's a rideable balistic missile ! :D

That's the only thing I don't like about some of these Youtube videos/authors is that they sometimes use copyrighted music which either gets removed or blocked from being viewed in some countries. When it comes to flightsim or real aviation videos, I prefer just to hear the simulated/real sounds of the engines & wind sans music.

The model looks great from both the VC and exterior and from the video the fps looks excellent.

Especially at airshows. If I want music I'll bring my own.

The cockpit looks great and the flight was very smooth so it looks to be very easy on the framerate. On the website there are video links so you can see the exterior and the various loadouts.

Enjoyed the previous MiG-21F-13 and am really looking forward to this updated version. Will have to break out the reference books and clean the spray guns for this one as well.

Excellent!

Been waiting for this one. I thought it had fallen through the cracks since earlier this year.

Agree on music, as music is based upon one's "taste". Although Pink Floyd suits my taste, it may not for others. Also, don't let the lawyers hear that one. Pink Floyd's (along with Capitol/Columbia/EMI) lawyers have sharp pen's! Have been the target of a "cease and desist" letter from them before.

Still working on my metric conversions though....

You don't want much do you? :icon_lol: Every one of those "spots" is unique and no repeating pattern. It is pretty but myself I've got too many other projects on the books.

I think I'll stick to what I did with the earlier MiG-21F-13; Yugoslavia, Romania, and maybe Cuba is they fly this model.

Hi,
Id like to ask the others. Do You star engine with startup procedures? I noticed some difficult to start engine (with videos too). Turbine dosnt start too, only when I push throttle more. Next - something bad with flight model. Roll is ok for delta wings, but vertical flight is quite strange. Very offen plane wants to fly to ground and forces minus vertical speed (with 400 km/h). Sure, I enjoy of this MiG something like 1-2 hours, so small period. Mabye Im wrong, but somathing strange with FM.

Just tested this beauty. For all who have problems to start up like me (THX german GEMA) .I have simply replaced the panel.cfg with some other from FSX. Okay that really makes no fun but better as sitting in the cockpit and waiting for a new start up movie. I hope Ivan will post a new one ???

For all having issues starting the model, there is a quickstart button in the simicon group you can access by hitting Shift 2. Clicking that button will configure everything for flight except flaps and landing lights. It takes a minute or so for the engine to start but it will start.

I think there´s already a quick start function included!

All you have to do is:
- press SHIFT+2 and
- in the pop-up window press the button for the vehicle (ground power) and after that
- press the quick start button
- after some seconds the aircraft engine spools up ...

Walter

Take a look at the manual for the panel (Pravý panel) :
- on page 5 (right side of the cockpit) you can see a panel button No 3
- use the mouse to turn it to the right
- then a weapon control panel opens for the five external weapon stations ...

It´s a bit easier if you have activated the "tool-tips-function" in fsx because many buttons are then described in english.

All you have to do is:
- press SHIFT+2 and
- in the pop-up window press the button for the vehicle (ground power) and after that
- press the quick start button
- after some seconds the aircraft engine spools up ...

Take a look at the manual for the panel (Pravý panel) :
- on page 5 (right side of the cockpit) you can see a panel button No 3
- use the mouse to turn it to the right
- then a weapon control panel opens for the five external weapon stations ...

Thanks for the tip! Anyone know what the center console that pops up is for..?

skyblazer3
July 3rd, 2011, 14:14
You can use that pop-up center consul to set NDB frequencies (9 of them) while on the ground. THen you can switch between them in the air using 9 little round buttons on the right side of the cockpit. When that panel pops up, there are also some rotary switches that pop up on the top right side of the instrument panel, and you can play with those to get different loadouts (again, while on the ground).

@yoyo..... as for the flight dynamics... I have no idea how a mig 21 should fly, but there is a green light that illuminates on the annunciator panel when you trim up a substantial amount. I find that the aircraft will takeoff and land much much better when that light is illuminated. I find myself trimming the aircraft all the time, and I suspect that is normal for this type of aircraft. I remember my father telling me that he was constantly having to trim the F-100...... maybe it has to do with the high-fuel burn of these early supersonic fighters.

I like how it flies, but I have mostly stayed in the pattern trying to develop a safe landing procedure.

How are other people landing this thing without ripping off the gear or landing short?

YoYo

@yoyo..... as for the flight dynamics... I have no idea how a mig 21 should fly..
Solved. In too same time :). My panel for Cessna (of Saitek) is active. Problem it was default trim of this panel. I found a solution and now I think I see FM of model. Thx for this reply.

Small correction needs effect of engine (smoke). It eats too many FPS for me.
I take sound from MiG21 F13 for sure, remember this from fs2004 from Captain Sim UB but Id like tho have the new one. Any idea for better sounds?

Keep the power and speed up. I typically land the Mig around 170-190 KIAS. I'm carrying about 70-80% N1 on short final. Use the landing flaps too.

The Mig does not like to land slow....long runways are in order.

skyblazer3
July 3rd, 2011, 17:37
do you ever use speed brakes on landing?

Walter
July 3rd, 2011, 18:18
I've only landed twice, so I'm not an expert. I only use speedbreaks after I have touched down, so that I don't end up losing airspeed and planting it down hard. :icon_lol:

That's my two cents.

Walter

This is more than likely a dumb question, but how do you pop the drag chute? I push the deploy button, but no dice.

deathfromafar
July 3rd, 2011, 19:18
Videos I've watched this evening show Mig-21MF's on final with their boards out but when I use it in the sim, the drag is so great that the continuous speed loss & rapid/high sink rate will cause me to fall short. Unless the fuel weight needs to be very low with a specific power setting & AoA. Need to test this more.

skyblazer3
July 3rd, 2011, 19:19
works fine for me. there is a deploy button on the left side with a yellow ring around it, and then a release button down on the left side by your hip to let it go once you are almost stopped.

skyblazer3
July 3rd, 2011, 19:21
@deathfromafar..... I agree... I think we should probably be using speed brakes and high power -- but the current flight model makes you sink like a rock when you put out the boards..... high AOA does not seem to help me. I've been landing well without them. I would love to know the real world procedure.

20% fuel weight is the ticket with being in proper landing config(AoA, speed and weight). You can land at higher weights but you'll need to up the speed and modify the drag config(ie=no boards) and reset the trim accordingly. The Mig like most aircraft tend to wheel barrel nose down with full flaps and at high speeds(within approach speeds) so you have to stay on top of the trim as you make power adjustments for sink rate and making the landing zone of the runway. At lighter weights you can make your final down to 165 and at proper AoA which you won't need much flare at touchdown. Just maintain power all the way down with a very slight flare. One thing for sure, this FDE is a lot more thought out than the one on the previous Mig Ivan released. It seems very close to envelope from the tables and the pilot reports I've read/heard.

skyblazer3
July 4th, 2011, 01:26
20% fuel or less helps. Thanks for the information. Approaches are much more comfortable and I've been able to grease a few on.

Does anyone know if this Mig has a fuel dump switch besides the throttle?

Dag
July 4th, 2011, 07:38
An outstanding addon in every respect. I've been flying it for several hours today and have no problems landing it at 350 km/h with high weight (80% fuel). True, the aircraft requires careful trim on approach especially when deploying flaps at high weight. The flight model reminds me of a slightly easier C9 F-104 without the pitch up/roll tendencies.
It's perfect for my Saitek X-65F.

Thanks

MiG?!? What MiG?!?!?

Lateral-G
July 4th, 2011, 08:18
Spot on with the landing/approach speeds. My initial reports were at 70-80% fuel remaining. After several landings at at the lighter weight (about 30%) you can definitely reduce your speeds and touch down around 160-165kts.

I tried landing with both speed brakes stowed and deployed. With them out you need to carry a lot more throttle. They really slow you down. My preference right now is full flaps only for landing.

If you're worried about dumping fuel just tool around with full AB for a few minutes and you'll get the weight down :kilroy:

This plane is a blast to fly.

agreed, 35% fuel, no speed brakes, for runway touchdown, but approach is faster at 180 KIAS or more, say 188 KIAS for example.

Aircraft can trim nicely and fly smoothly to the runway.

So far only daylight and clear weather.

What kind of book are the pictures?

Zsolt, those photos/color plates are from 2 old books from Squadron/Signal Publications. One is called Flying Colors which has many different aircraft color plates in it and the other is Fighting Colors Mig-21 Fishbed in Color by Hans-Heiri Stapfer. I'm not even sure either book is still in print anymore. I paid $25 for the Flying Colors book in 1983 which was expensive for the time. The Mig-21 in Color book I found in a hobby store clearance rack a couple of years ago and the store clerk told me they had that book in the store unsold for 20 years! I had looked at the book many times before getting it. They sold it to me for $1 !

MF Update (Category: FSX > Military)

This is an update for FSX of the Mig-21 MF by Ivan Jurcaga. I have updated the flight dynamics, given it a 2D panel, and added nav lights. There is a VC, but you need to read Russian or possibly Czech to know what all is on it. You need the original aircraft for this update to work.

I saw this one too.

IMO the Mig flies fine as is.

For the interested, I have created a cockpit and startup guide.I suspect that the "update" mentioned here is from someone with no knowledge of the plane. From my research, it flies accurately, and beyond that, why would lights need to be "added" to the model when they are already included? It's just a matter of knowing the correct systems to turn them on.

This is a great little jet to buzz around in, and a nice contrast to the Milviz T-38. Lots of character. The only obvious issue is the really aggressive speed brake - it's like throwing out a battleship anchor at low speed, lol.

PS: Just used it, works perfect ! Just 1 minor, non life threatening issue: In the cockpit familiarization picture of the left console, the dragchute release/reload button label is in the wrong place, it should point at the white button just after the flaps switches.

Bob did good work with panel ect., but FM isnt realistic again. In 1 sec. You can do 5 barrels! Fly is very easy but MiG-21 isnt and wasnt easy aircraft at all. FM must be some like F-104, but with better possibility of maneuvers. Too easy to reach high speed too. With this update MiG is oversteer. I think FM of this MiG is still Achilles heel but the orginal one is still better but no perfect ...

To all "topgun" repainters

As you probably already know, "Eduard" released a few week ago a superb 1/48 scale Mig-21MF "High Class" multimedia kit with excellent and very realistic reference material for potential repaints on the instruction manual of this kit.

Here is some examples :

East Germany ( page 12 ) here :

Egypt ( page 14 )
Czechoslovakia ( page 15 )
Slovakia ( page 16 )

East Germany ( page 19 )
and
Aircraft Stencils ( page 20 )

Agreed - there are some amazing repaints. His African countries' schemes are not only thorough, but also very convincingly done. Having a particular fondness for DACT training (especially the older F-5E and F-21 Kfir models the USN and USMC used), I really enjoyed seeing his American "what if" schemes - this one, with the large red lettering, in particular ...

Well, if there are any manuals and at least one pilot report available I could make high quality FDs for the Mig-21 if there's enough demand.
It's for sure an interesting plane and I remember that I've read somewhere that full flap landings were only allowed after you aquired quite a few hours on the 21.

Woohoo!!! Awesome Zsolt - looks superb!

I didn't mention this earlier, because I didn't you would do it - the only minor I see with this scheme (not the fault of your work, because this was in the original art) is the national markings.
42589

The Studio Gekko artist used the very modern, dotted-line national style, more common later period Aggressor aircraft (eg: F-15), whereas I believe the "Top Gun" (NSAWC) / USAF Aggressors scheme this is modelled after is more along the 1980's style of markings, where the national markings were solid black, as per this:

42590
Sorry I couldn't get a close up of the national insignia ... but you get the idea!

Again, small detail, not your fault, and if you're too far along to change - no problem!

Nope, floored it at FL360, could not exceed Mach 1.2 in level flight. Not sure how to fix this, the FDE looks quite unusual: Empty weight is set almost 2x what it should be according to the books and the engine parameters look odd too with e.g. a thrust_scalar=2.0. My faint guess is this has been done intentionally to give the flight characteristics a heavy feeling to it? Without a good understanding of what is behind this, I am afraid messing about with the engine/weight values might make things worse...

Finally, maybe if more repainters get involved, we can set a goal! At least one livery from every Mig-21 former/current operator. Here's the list:

Nope, floored it at FL360, could not exceed Mach 1.2 in level flight. Not sure how to fix this, the FDE looks quite unusual: Empty weight is set almost 2x what it should be according to the books and the engine parameters look odd too with e.g. a thrust_scalar=2.0. My faint guess is this has been done intentionally to give the flight characteristics a heavy feeling to it? Without a good understanding of what is behind this, I am afraid messing about with the engine/weight values might make things worse...

That's why I asked if there are any Mig 21 pilots who would like to have high quality FDs for the Mig-21, but there wasn't a single reply....

Well, if there are any manuals and at least one pilot report available I could make high quality FDs for the Mig-21 if there's enough demand.

Barfly sent me already very useful links, so it might be possible to achieve FDs of similar quality as for the Milviz T-38.

Here is a famed Russian repaint produced by french repainter Fulbert.

This is "Blue 30" seen in Reims french air force base in 1971 during a visit of the Soviet Air Force Chief Commander, Marechal P.S. Kutakhov.

http://www.pilote-virtuel.com/viewtopic.php?id=32795

On message No.5 of this topic "Fulbert" also offer a brand new configured version download of this Mig-21MF :

This new version take back all modifications proposed by Bob Chicilo but without the 2D panel, plus :

a realistic two underwing fuel tanks configuration
new contact points for the front wheel
the repaint kit
starting procedure
"Blue 30" repaint only

I download it and added after the original and add-on repaints on this version.
Very interesting !

On my request, Fulbert produced also yesterday famed and well known
"Soviet / Blue 40" seen on a visit in Finland in 1974.

This Mig-21 is wearing "Cyrillic / Russian" Red or Blue inscriptions on each side
of the cockpit sponsoring a soviet communist youth organisation.

Its here to download on message No.9

First flight, first landing. I'm happy. What an iconic aircraft! Awesome job, thanks so much! We need more of these kind of planes. Su-22 anyone? :D

I need help getting the weapons and external tanks to display.....

I found the panel on the r/h side of the cockpit. There are buttons numbered 1 thru 9 and the button that denotes 10ths +/-

However, pressing these buttons yields no results. I've even flipped the weapons switches located on the right side c/p panel but still no joy.

What am I doing wrong?

You tried to change the loadouts using the ADF panel, loadout panel should pop up on the right side of the ADF panel.

Normal state:
42934

ADF + Loadout Panel activated:
42933

If I would've posted that cockpit startup procedure video, I would've explained what I was doing and especially
allow everybody to hear the engines start up, which is what flight is all about, and left out the music.
If you would consider for a moment going to an air show, especially to see the Blue Angels, and the loud speakers
were playing music so loud you could not hear the airplanes at all. Would this appeal to you? And if
you complained, they told you to put on noise cancelling head phones and you just watched the airplanes and heard nothing ?

Yes. It's a pretty good kit. Switching to it now.
:ernae:

Downloaded it yesterday. Looks very usable.

- Edit: Cut down the aircraft folder from 160 to 55 MBytes thanks to texture.cfgs and a shared folder. Much better!
