View Full Version : Modern Airliners (and maybe not so modern)

OK, so I'm shamelessly copying Roger! Sure, they're called "shop heaters," or "hair dryers," but there's still thousands of users that like to fly them - myself included. Today, it was the Project Airbus A380 from Bangkok to Hong Kong. Personally, I don't bother with anything smaller than a 777-300 or the new 747-800F. I love the challenge of landing the biggest planes out there! If you're a Boeing fan, then you probably already know about Free Sky Project, aka FSPro (http://www.freeskyproject.com/index), and Airbus fans will likely know the name Project Airbus (http://www.pairbus.com/board/).

Oddly enough though, I prefer not to fly them as an existing airline. I prefer private paint jobs. So most of the time, I'll just take the paint kit and slap a small reg on a plain white paint and and fly it as if it was a budget charter service. That may seem counter-intuitive on an A380, but then, it is a simulator! If the entire population of Whitsett NC (735) want to pool their resources and take a trip to London, who am I to say no!?

I also love just about all of the older three-holers like the 727 or the L1011 (Eric Cantu's L1011 unfinished model is currently being reworked by FSPro), and the freeware MD-11 from Overland (http://www.overland.co.jp/japaneseairports/special.html) is also an old favorite.

So, who else out there likes airliners? Do you have a preference? Speak up!

The Tinmouse B737-200 is my favorite along with the Flight One B727 series.

Also the early Vistaliners 727 & 737 series, along with anything by Erick Cantu and Kittyhawk.

Oldies but still good.

Pete.

Except for "OPERATED BY CLAYTON AIR" by the front door and a small reg on the back, that white one is exactly what my Airbus looks like!:icon_lol:

For sounds, I use Emil Serafino's Trent 800 sounds. I could be completely wrong, but I'm betting there's not a huge difference in the sounds. Be sure to get the update file too:

You may have to do some creative searching, but Avsim and Flightsim should have the files. As far as the Antonov, I suppose it might slip in a (large) side door...:isadizzy:

Eric Cantu has let Historic Jetliners Group (HJG) use his unfinished L1011 TriStar. They've got it up for download now with a bunch of paints, two different panels, improved flight dynamics and a new sound set. I've always liked the big Lockheed as the first trip I ever took commercial the last leg was on a Delta TriStar.

Another I like is the HJG 727.

My favorite jetliner is David Maltby's Comet 4.

But I really like the old propliners. Jens Kristensen makes some good ones. I'm really fond of his Boeing 307 Stratoliner, Douglas DC-4 and Canadair Argonaut. Manfred Jahn's L749 Constellation is another favorite.

The only airliner that I fly as a passenger carrier is the stock 747....but most of the time I fly it with the weight/payload cut down to just the pilot and co-pilot (no passengers, no luggage, no stewardesses) and fuel cut down to just 8000 gallons in the center tanks. Then I flip the bird over on its back, 500 feet or so above ground level, smash the throttles to the fire wall and watch as my inverted airliner gets oh so close to the speed of sound.

Most of the time when I am flying an airliner..usually one with round engines and props...I do so with the mind set that I am hauling goods and supplies rather than people. I am a cargo hauler at heart.

well i don't know... depends what your 'Cargo' is, knowing Obio i wouldn't be surprised if it was a brewery owner, and obio was after the keys to the brewery (explains the inverted torture method)...

another odd one i like flying is Jens' Comets... such a beautiful shape...

Willy

Jens' Comets are pretty good, but IMHO David Maltby's are much better. Although I've yet to get the autopilot sorted out on it.

...A video of some paywares and freewares A380...

My goodness...I didn't realise there were so many A380 offerings!

Yonks ago, I was looking for a good A380, and bought the Overland series (you couldn't buy singletons)ALL the Boeings, ALL the Airbuses. I'm still happy with their A380 although the PA model is really good - just needs a VC and it will be a tough choice.

My all-time favourite jetliner has to be the (then) POSKY B777, because of the VC, and unmatched external model.
Why then, has it proven so difficult to get the FDE right?
Every time I download a repaint, there is yet another FDE update, now v9 I think.
I've just given up on it.

I generally lean towards HJG Boeings. Mainly because of all the variations Civilian as well as Military. If you spent any amount of time in the Air Force from 60s to today you have flown, boarded, maintained or been touched in some way by a Boeing aircraft. It's just my opinion but, there are very few aircraft that can compare with the history of the Boeing 707. Many a passenger has boarded her, and millions of tons of cargo have passed through her hold. In war and peace you would be hard pressed to find a military pilot that has not at least one time, thanked the Lord for that flying gas station. Many a TDY or Combat deployment has started in the hold of a 707/KC135 and many have ended with the return of loved ones in happiness or in sorrow. I spent 30 years in the Air Force, My first flight on an aircraft of any kind was a hop from Ellinton Field in Houston TX on a KC135 to Kinchloe AFB Michigan, my first duty asignment, my last flight on a KC135 was leaving Prince Saultan AFB Saudi Arabia, heading to Germany for the start of a long trip home. That Boeing was a good friend it took me where I was needed and always brought me home safe.

For some reason, I've always had a fondness for the smallest airliners, the 19 seat planes. Viking Air has put the Twin Otter back in production, so that's the only one I know of being built now. PAD has a pretty good Twin Otter, floats and wheels.

The dominant 19 seater today seems to be the Beech 1900D, and PAD has a very good one. I enjoy flying that one. I also fly Rick Piper's HS748, a plane used in the Canadian Arctic because of its flexible freight/pax configuration. Of course, there's Milton's DHC7 which can shoehorn into any runway. Both of those planes are high quality models.

The DHC Dash 8 by PAD is good, and the Q400 version has a full cabin, but watch that you don't scrape the tail on rotation! POSKY's CRJs are great, and the EMB 195 by PAD is a more modern version of the regional jet. I just like the looks of it.

When I want to go really small, I fly the payware FSD Piper Navajo. Air taxi, charter...the aircraft is top notch and worth the money.

Besides all tweaking, overclocking, obeying procedure charts and longing for the highest possible "accuracy", it's the fun that brings us all together!
And plain white paints can be fun too!
I did that for a VA some weeks ago:
