That does look bad a**! When I was in the navy, in an FA-18C squadron, we went to Nellis AFB for training with the USAF, and I overheard some of our pilots talking about making the mistake of "picking on" the A-10s. The basic rule of thumb seemed to be 1) don't get in front of that plane. It's that gun... and 2) don't turn with an A-10, because it can make square turns... :icon_lol:

Great story Paul, yeah I would not want to be in the sights of A-10!

Smoothie, those are great looking paints! Hopefully David will at least let you out for the Holidays! LOL!

The scenery is in Iraq from Michael Carr. I know its at flightsim.com, probably at avsim also. The file name is mcdiraq.zip.

You should be about 100yds away on the ground when that gun fires when coming in for a strafing run 75' off the deck....it sounds like the sky is ripping apart.

Got to see it more than a few times at FLW's Cannon Range....

That would be awesome. Or perhaps a bit too close for "awesome"... :) I've watched our FA-18s strafe targets towed behind the aircraft carrier with thier M61 20mm cannon. It sounds like this: "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp, whooooooooop"

On our FTX at Ft. Sill, us gun bunnies had a couple MLRS go off over our heads about 1.5mi away - loudest damn thing I've ever heard.

heh. even if its too close, its the most beautiful sound in the world, cuz usually it means you can sleep safely that night.. When i was in nam, we could hear shadows four miniguns firing from over five miles away, it was like the worlds loudest buzz saw, and we all loved it..

If you do a Canadian Arctic Camo Hog, I could give heck to the USAF over in Alaska and menice the Chinese/Russians in the Arctic Ocean:jump:

The only problem with those pictures is anyone looking at it can't hear it. They really got the engine sounds right on this, as it has that sort of "buzzing" sound the high bypass TF's make replicated very well. I'm assuming they used actual recordings, just saying.

USAF Eielson AFB, just about 20 miles east of Fairbanks had A-10 aircraft for years but now all have gone to other bases. There may be some paints of these aircraft in winter.

Back in the 70's I was commuting between Shreveport and the small town we were living in and the drive took me past Barksdale AFB. Every afternoon, you could see the 917th TFW practicing their gun runs over Barksdale. Those A-10s would dive, pop-up, and roll off of the target.....like watching a ballet with depleted uranium shells!!:icon_lol:

Made the trip home a bit more enjoyable!

USAF Eielson AFB, just about 20 miles east of Fairbanks had A-10 aircraft for years but now all have gone to other bases. There may be some paints of these aircraft in winter.

THEY MOVED THEM?!

I was stationed there up to the end of 2005. I worked on the ECM on those hogs. David, I believe at my request, included an early Eielson paint scheme.

While I was stationed there, during several Cope Thunder exercises, I never once saw any A-10 painted in winter camo. They were always the typical USAF gray. These camo jobs happened before, and after my stint at the base. Same with the F-16s that were stationed there. They painted up the D in nice camo right after I left. Crying shame. Never once saw any bird in those beautiful colors.

Of note, that famous picture of the moose on the flight line at Eielson AFB was taken while I was there.

An interesting story about the A-10s... They were flying in after a long stint overseas doing combat and I had volunteered to work as security while some of our SPs were in the sandbox. While they were flying in, we had a car come out of nowhere into our zone. After flipping on the wailers, stopping the vehicle with guns pointed, it only then became apparent we had just stopped and drawn our weapons at our base commander (who had never told anyone he was there to welcome the boys back to base).

Thankfully he was completely cool with what happened. Even had a chuckle about it. I think he learned his lesson though, as we had no further security breaches from a base commander that I was aware of after that.

This was off course back in the 80s and a few aircraft had the markings painted on. Rescue markings and ejection seat triangles were different as well. Some white being used.
