The last surviving crewmember of the U. S. S. Juneau that was sunk by a Japanese submarine November 13, 1942, has passed away.
The San Diego Union Tribune reports Orrel Glenn Cecil of Poway, California, died November 4 at age 90.
Cecil was not actually on board when the torpedo hit during the battle of Guadalcanal.
He had been sent away hours earlier as part of a medical crew to tend to wounded on a sister ship.
The five Sullivan brothers of Waterloo, Iowa, perished in the attack.
The last survivor of the actual sinking was Frank Holmgren who passed away in May of 2009.
He was among the last of the five survivors at the time to serve as Juneau's 4th of July parade grand marshals in 1987.
The U. S. S. Juneau Memorial was also dedicated that day.
