Hi All,
I'm having one of those "brain freeze" moments. For the life of me, I can't remember how to open the rear canopy so the gunner can "pop out". I know I'm going to feel silly, but how do you get the rear canopy to open?
Thanks,
Bub

Even though the gear is fixed on the Val and not retractable, I find that after I take off and press the "G" key like I'm retracting my gear what happens instead is the rear canopy slides out of the way and the gunner pops out. Hope the same goes for you.

kwb,
Thank you, for "refreshing" my memory. That was the only keystroke I didn't try. Hate having those "Doh" momemts.

You're very welcome.

I asume this is a flyable Val. If so, where do you get it. secondly, can the rear gunner of the dive bombers acually fire?

I use the flyable PHP Val at this page. And yes the rear gunner fires.

thanks -- thought those might be the ones. Now another dumb question. How do I make the rear gunner fire?? I seem to have done that before, but senior moments are taking over more often.

B-24 Guy's Val also folds its wings, lowers its tail hook, opens its cowel flaps, landing and take off flaps and deploys its dive brakes. As I recall, if you use the G key to deploy the gunner, be sure to retract him with the G key before landing. If not, the sim thinks you have your landing gear up and it will interpret you landing as a crash.

The B-24 Guy's SBD Dauntless update also has a full range of annimations with the exception of the folding wings as the real one didn't have them either.

If you are flying Vals, try Akemi's nice D3A1 here:

Hi All,
I didn't look at kwb's link so I'm not sure if its the same. I was refering to The B24 Guy's OH Val. I hope I didn't create any confusion, but it seems to have worked itself out.
If you are using this Val, you should check out Kelticheart's "fixed" skins and, I believe, revev did a bunch of skins for the Val. All are outstanding and should give Val drivers a load of options.
Thanks,
Bub

If you're sneaking up behind the Val in lets say a wildcat the Val's rear gunner will open on you automatically at a certain distance. If your flying the Val your self and you want to fire the rear guns the all ya gotta do is pull the trigger on your joy stick and not only will the rear gunner start firing but also your forward guns.

OK guys. Thanks for all the input. Just started thinking about other A/C to fly except the stock ones. I have added a few in PTO MTO & ETO but not the VAl until now.
If I did everything this sim allows with all the missions , etc--I would be divorced and living alone! :kilroy:

If it hadn't happened to ME, I'd be laughing harder and smiling a lot more, HP..... lol

I noticed that in Akemi's Val the rear gunner does not pop out no matter what you do. Too bad, nice looking plane.

I don't recall the key command off hand, but Akemi's Val has the rear gunner annimation too.

Here are a couple of shots with and without rear gunner deployment with Akemi's D3A1.

Mr Nibs offered this repair to the Aircraft.cfg a LONG time ago, all I had to do was find it.If anyone has the time to figure out what he did [I think it relates somehow to animating the tail wheel...] Have at it !

My joystick #2 button will fire the rear gunner on the VAL ,Dauntless, Avenger, and Devastator. And even on some of my twin engine birds!
The #1 trigger fires the forward guns.:jump:

I'll second that. Akemi's Val was my first choice but since the rear gunner would not deploy I went with my second. I'm kinda picky that way. I'd love it if some one found the repair to make the deployment work.

Hi All,
When I started this thread with a "brain freeze" question, I had no idea it would take on a life of its own. I think it's great that it did. It shows that a "silly" subject can be discussed and expanded into a worthwhile discussion.
I use The B-24 Guys OH Val and have yet to use Akemi's Val, but will give it a shot soon. Here's a couple of shots with the "offending" canopy open.
Thanks Again,
Bub

In case the Akemi canopy refuses to open, try modifying the [Contact Points] section of the Aircraft.cfg file thusly - Cut and paste the following AFTER you make a backup of the original CFG file:

Sorry SC, Still no go. Gunner canopy still closed and rear gunner still facing forward.

In Akemi's Val the rear gunner animation is tied to the canopy (SHIFT+C). When you open the canopy, the rear gun deploys.

Wow!! Thanks Jap Lance!! Who would of ever thought that the "Toggle Main Exit" Key would make it happen!! Thanks again very much.
