Thanks for the very informative link. Crikey indeed. Had the same incident occured over (big) water time and fuel, plus the imbalance caused by the tank leak might not have permitted a sucessful conclusion.

QANTAS has been lucky in their bad luck, so far.

Makes chilling reading, half a dozen total hull loss scenarios in there.

It is fair to suggest that Qantas needs to review relationships with engine manufacturers in which it pays for power by-the-hour and leaves much of the maintenance and oversight of those engines to the designer and manufacturer.

That's pretty trusting on Qantas' part to let the manufacturer take care of the engines.
