That's what happens in the cyber age.

No one sits down IN PERSON with friends to play board games anymore.

I remember as a child, looking forward to going over to my friend's house to play board games...

(Sigh).....

We had the AH "Midway" board game aboard ship years ago. I remember it was very difficult for the American side to win the battle unless both players were new at the game - otherwise the Japanese side usually kicked butt. :icon_lol:

Gentlemen there is still a waqy to play squadleader online through a download called VASSAL. There is a small strong group of Squad Leader fans out there. The rights to the Avalon Hill games have been sold to another publishing group. This group only is the advanced Squad leader group. Most Avalon Hill games are still available to be brought on Ebay. There are also somw game stores such as Noble Knight Games that sell out of print games.

Tactics II was my introduction to war... I remember sweating out the convoys in Africa Korps, taking Little Round Top in Gettysburg, going for the Pas de Calais in D-Day, getting my ass handed to me in Battle of the Bulge, and that damned FE2 in Richthofen's War... sad to see the d&d crowd has taken AH to the grave

When I was a kid, I guess i was 10 or 11 in '60-61 and Avalon Hill made a great American Civil War game that I played a lot with my uncle.I remeber it being fairly tough to play but a great game.Panther's right..no one takes the time to play board games anymore.
A few years ago my wife and I and another couple went out to Wainapanapa on the way to Hana on Maui and rented a cabin by the beach. It's a state Park and the cabin's at the time were about twelve bucks per night...No TV or phone, just the beach and the palms.....anyway, we brought along a Risk game and had a ball..plyed one game for about ten - twelve hours till my friend's wife wound up conquering all of us in an insane battle with me. What a great thing....it's a shame that board games are no longer as popular as they once were.o well....

Man does this thread bring back the memories ! The hours [days] playing Africa Korps,Blitz Kieg ,Midway,Risk,Diplomacy and all the others where great times .There was something to sitting at a game with your bud learning the rules , and totalling up attack points . Just not the same now with these computor games . . . good times ! Avalon Hill is missed .

Hey All,

I was big on AH games as well. I still have all pieces present and in original boxes Battle of the Bulge (my favorite), D-Day and 1776. I used to have Outdoor Survival and BlitzKrieg - don't recall what happened to them. I also still have Blue and Gray by Simulations Publications.

I now have and sometimes play Battles in Normandy and may get BattleFront one of these days.

I played AH games all the time in my youth. I still have many in storage. My favourite game, however, was called Ironclads. I can't remember the publisher, but I had the original and the expansion pack. Great fun.

I still have a few Avalon Hill games that I bought about 20 some odd years ago. Stalingrad, The Guns of August, Origins of World War II, Luftwaffe and Fury in the West. I went looking to buy more and found out that they had been bought out by Hasbro which ruined a good game company.

I have been very sad to hear all this bummer news about avalon hill. been hearing it awhile. I spent a lot of time in college playing squad leader, and the 3 addons. Loved it. Have blitzkrieg, war at sea, Midway, tactics 2, Panzer leader. Loved them all.

good to know I wasn't the only one :ernae:
