external hardrive advice

Ok, what i want to do is move either my games (fs9 and cfs2) or my music to an external hardrive so it wont take up space on my laptop. (C: drive is 55.8gb total). now, i was looking at some at newegg and found a 20gb one for about $75. that looked like the best deal for me being that fs9 is 5-6gb already and cfs2 is near 1gb. i plan to get more stuff for the games when i get more room. music is 5-6gb. what i would like to know is this: do you think its a smart idea to spend $75 on an external hardrive?

i only have 2 usb ports and w/ my usb mouse and joystick, i would have to unplug one to use the enternal hardrive. im guessing i would have to get some sort of splitter or something for my usb ports to get more ports.......? not sure how much that would or if it exsists. right now im using around 1/2 of space on my laptop but its getting pretty slow for fs9. my vid card in an ATI 9000 w/ 256mb of ram. and ideas on where to upgrade......vid card, ram, or memory?

USB hub (=multi splitter, like 4x) should be about $10,
External h/d: you should really get one a bit bigger; 80Gb at the very least. Get some breathing space!

the ones i saw at newegg were about $100 :icon_eek: . do have any idea that would be cheaper? ill look into a usb splitter.

thanks for all the imput.......now the saving begins. :mad: . so ill price the usb splitters w/ a power pack and most likely get a 80gb external drive. lol thats bigger than my laptop now. now if anybody has ideas on good deals.....im all ears... :)

If you happen to have any old but working hard drives around, just get a USB enclosure. About $30.00 at Newegg.

I always save my old drives if I install a bigger drive. That way I can use it as a slave or a USB backup drive.
