Ended up havin to take it down. Still have most of my rollin stock, but that's bout it.
One of these days I hope to be able to do one again

Hi Talon,
yep, got N gauge but I'm the same as Gramps, its packed away as I don't have room.
Been toying with the idea of having a setup on a board which can be lowered and raised to near ceiling height but the landlord doesn't approve.:costumes:
Thought I might be able to fit 2 engines into a deisel model.....end result was 2 ruined deisel models.:banghead:
Have you come across an N gauge sand/gravel hopper that discharges its load like the OO Hornby one?

I grew up with HO scale, but upon entering college I had no time for such things and left the hobby. Well beyond graduation now, I did buy some N scale locomotives (first generation diesels), some rolling stock, track, turnouts, and used Atlas' free software to design a nice door top layout. I have yet to even purchase the door.

In 1992 I had an HO layout with about 300ft of duel line track,36 inch radius curves and was nice to see a big Boy or CabForward to go aroung them.
I started to get back into it last year after I found an NGauge Daylight Classic train with a steam engine.I now have two 4-8-4 Warbabies for the Southern Pacific and a few F3 diesels in the Black Widow scheme. All mainline track is working and need to wire the branchlines. The city is almost done, just waiting for 2 more buildings for it and I'm working on the industries.I usually pickup what I need when I'm in NJ.I expect everything will be in during July.

my grandfathers were train people in real life
my mothers father at cromer and my fathers father
at Magdalen road allways waved at the Queen on her way to sandringham
had one room with trains running around
is it worth anything today?

Yes,
Ho scale here, way too many brass imports sitting on display shelves. 22 ft x 16 ft dual track layout in a U shape that one of the cats likes to claw on. I'll get running again this late fall, when it is too cold to enjoy the outdoors.
The hobbies are way out of control here! I did the plastic model aircraft and tanks plus many resin kits, until the eyesight started going. I still saved the best work, much WW1 in resins.
Now mostly CFS2 design and I still get to the occasional vintage sports car race with my 1958 Lotus 7 and 1960 Lotus Elite. Don't tell anyone, but I have started planting flowers around the house. Scary, Very scary!
Cheers Thicko

I started with HO, but my wife got me going in G Scale in the garden. Have about 120 ft of track in a figure eight with one loop around a pond with 26 gold fish and three frogs. Used grey Trex boards as foundation, very stable and it looks like ballast from a distance. That saved a lot of work. :d
PS I still have the original Marklin FIRST HO tinplate passenger and freight trains. No, I am not selling them. :d:d:d

My plan is to start doing scenery in september if all goes well.

I still have a refugee from my OO days.
Its a 4-6-2 Princess Elizabeth by Triang.
Not sure who is older, it or me!:costumes:
Still works, has the old fashion coupling on the tender but none on the front of the loco.

I know am still a young Whipper snapper on these forums but ill say it anyway.
When I was young...
I use to have various sets but alas size is always a problem and so is the expense. A year or so ago however I discovered the 'Trainz' software.
I can make 'virutal' layouts to as large as I want them and use whatever I want from buildings to trees to vast amounts of rolling stock and loco's.
Heres a few pictures of my layout, set in the UK naturally but the program has all sorts of country setting's.

The current Version I believe is Trainz2006 and is well worth buying for anyone who wants to have a layout but does not have the space.

Trainz is not MSTS, but this is > http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsimulator/
I hear that whistle blowin', commin' round the bend.
TS X is on the way, I got no bucks to spend.
I'm stuck in unemployment
So I don't get to play.
But TS X is commin' so I'll have to find a way.

I had a nice N-guage set-up a few years back in an unfinished basement in an L-shape around the walls. I had the track working smoothly was about to start the scenery when "THE X" and I split and before i got into a place that i could store the stock the cow threw it out.:censored:
I'm hoping to start from scratch again but the money is just not there at this time.:banghead:

Thats a shame Troyden, do hope you can get some pennies together and restart.
Money isn't my problem, space is. Living in a flat doesn't lend itself to a permanent set up.:redf:

have you tried setting something up like a wall bed. it would only have to be abot 3 inches deeper than your tallest point you would not be able to leave anything loose on the layout. You might also consider z scale, I've seen a very detailed setup in a table of about 3' x 5' and the top was about 8" deep covered with glass

Ill say it again Colin,
For those without space Trainz2004 or Trainz2006 software is great. Unlike Microsoft train simulator Trainz isnt an exact train simulator but rather as crazy as it sounds a model trains simulator. This is were it gets confusing as that makes it a simulator of a simulator of the real thing :isadizzy:
Anyway its very easy to get started kinda drag and drop plus theres thousands of downloads on the web to make your perfect layout.

Troyden, I have considered it, but I wouldn't go smaller scale, tho I might return to OO.
I like to see the trains working with summat instead of just running from station to station. Like the old Triang operating hopper set or the Hornby operating tipper and conveyor sets, and unless I can find the equivalent in N gauge I might go back to OO.
Lewis,
I have heard good things about Trainz but have no plans on getting it or the Microsoft one. Some Trainz users have requested my fsds2 model ships for use within their set up, I'm quite happy to let them have the files but they must realize that these models have to be converted to G-max first.

Colin that's the nice thing about the hobby ... it's a do your own thing those that don't understand that can bugger off. The only other suggestion i can make would be a club of some sort, you can't be the only one in your area with the desire but without space.
I wish you good luck.

Thanks troyden, ......I'm now toying with the idea of a working diorama,
John Brown's in either WW1 or WW2 vintage. Should be able to use the large plastic kits of the Hood or KGV .

I have a couple of big boxes of HO locomotives and cars I have been collecting for about 20 years or more now. I don't even know what I have anymore. Once in a while I will see something I like and buy it. My last purchase was SD38-2 in the EJ & E livery. I live about a mile from their tracks so when I saw it I just had to buy it. Most of my stuff is Chicago and Northwestern though as I grew up near their tracks. I screwed up a few years ago and bought a house without a basement so I don't have a layout. I have been a Model Railroader magazine subscriber for many years so when the time comes for me to begin a layout I will be up to date on the latest products and procedures. The cost of new products worries me a little but I guess that is the price you pay for "ready to run". I still have many models that need the handrails and number boards installed. In fact, except for a few Proto 2000 products, I have yet to purchase a ready to run product (off the top of my head). I could be wrong though. :costumes:
