I thought I had some pictures of VA-46 Clansmen A-7E aircraft from 1981-1982 time frame (PRE-tactical gray); but I was mistaken.

If anyone has, or can locate some Hi-Viz paint scheme pictures of VA-46 aircraft from 1982 time period, please contact me.

I have not been able to find any yet, and would like to, for purposes of a repaint.

Thanks.

Thanks Norab, but those pictures are of the A/B model, from an earlier time! The 1982 era seems to be elusive!! Thank you though! NC

VA-46's insignia was approved by CNO on 25 November 1960. The circular insignia had a blue field outlined by two concentric black lines; the McDougal clan tartan, drawn from the heritage of the squadron's first commanding officer (CDR Clifford A. McDougal), had dark blue and white lines on a red background, interspaced with green squares; the crest was white, outlined in black with the Latin words Vincere Vel Mori, meaning to conquer or to die; a white stylized aircraft outlined in black; and the banner was white with the designation VA 46 in black.

And the "Tartan" painted on their aircraft has changed over the years too!

Rob,

Thank you for those pictures. Even though they may not be that clear, the information given about the colors of the markings is great!

Thanks Ole Boy for your efforts, but again, those are the tactical gray paint schemes from a later period.

It is 1981-82 Hi-Viz that I seek!!!!

Getting close, but that's a "B" model off the JFK. I did find out that in '82, VA-46 had "E" models, and was assigned to the USS America (CV-66).

More information on the squadron at that time. It was assigned to CVW-1, and was on the following deployments on CV-66:

08/23/82 - 10/30/82 - CVW-1 - - CV 66- - A-7E - - NorLant/Mediterranean/Carib
12/08/82 - 06/02/83 - CVW-1 - - CV 66- - A-7E - - Mediterranean/IO

To everyone who is attempting to help locate these pictures, thank you! Ole Boy, I appreciate your trying to find them too!

I knew this wouldn't be easy, as I had spent hours search the net myself. I am hoping someone will be successful in finding the elusive pictures!

I did a search for CVW-1 VA-46. Found a Japanese site with information, including a partial list of BUNOs assigned to VA-46 for the August 82 - November 82 deployment on the America. Now, if I can track any of those BUNOs to a picture, I may find what I need. The aircraft didn't stay with one squadron for its entire life, however. As squadrons would deploy and return, aircraft would be transferred from one squadron to another, to ensure a deploying squadron would have (if I remember correctly) 12 a/c.

Update: Found these two pictures. I am fairly certain it is around 79-80 time frame. Getting closer!
