it seems like I have been messing around with Game Controllers
and keyboard assignments, just about forever.
today, for the first time,
I was able to use two joysticks at once in CFS.
why? you might ask.
because I want to and I now can.
seriously, I will now have 8 axis and 19 buttons available.
imagine, an elevator trim wheel.
I've been wanting one of those for years.
heck, maybe even multi-engine throttles
and mixture controls, we'll see about that later.
for now, I've got a big T handle throttle
with buttons for auto pilot functions and brakes,
and a stick with trim buttons, flaps, spoiler and gear,
and a bunch more buttons I haven't programed yet.

Geez S...might be cheaper to just hire a plane and go flying.

would that it were,
but around here, a couple $5 joysticks from Goodwill
and some time setting them up
doesn't equate to $100 an hour for the real thing.
if it did, I certainly wouldn't be here.
not to mention, I don't need a license
and I'm not grounded by crappy weather.

BTW, nice to see you post here.
I was beginning to think that
Hubba and Ivan were the only ones
using the place anymore.

but I digress...

I woke up at 04:00 this morning and laid there thinking about,
of all things, multi-engine throttles and mixture controls.
problem; there are no multi-engine or mixture axis in the COMBATFS.CFG
what to do, what to do?
well, how about just add them and see what happens?
so I dragged me arse out of bed and tried it.
I'll be jiggered...it worked.

------------:kilroy:--------------
there's much more to the story,
if anyone's interested

I don't really know how to take it...

So, could you put here the lines you added to the COMBATFS.CFG file?

Is it based on CFS2 CFG ?

I'm curious.

it was not meant as an insult,
just a statement of fact.
very few people, except you and Ivan,
use the CFS1 forum anymore.

for quite some time,
I have been working on building a cockpit.
also, I have been involved with the
Around the World Race in FS9.
one of the essential addons for FS9
is FSUIPC by Pete Dowson.
while touring his site, I came across documents
about controllers for FS98, FS2000 and FS2004.
right up my alley, so to speak.
also, in my cockpit research,
I've stumbled across several articles
by Peter Dowson, among others.
this weekend, I finally got around to testing
Peter's technique with very positive results,
except that the mixture axis is far to sensitive for my liking.
obviously, more fine tuning work needs to be done.

blah, blah, blah...
you'd think I could just answer the question.
better yet, Attached is a copy of Peter Dowson's FS98 Controls.
it is important to follow his "Note"s;

NOTE that if you assign controls directly in the .CFG file which are not listed and handled in the Custom Controls – Assignments dialogue, you should make a safety copy of your .CFG file. If you ever use the Assignments dialogue FS98 may re-write the [KEYBOARD ...] sections in your CFG file and you will lose all of your additional settings! Really, it is best to stick to .CFG file editing once you have taken this route, and avoid the Assignments dialogue altogether!
and;
FS98 processes the CFG file and often re-writes it. Unless we take precautions, it tends to do strange things, like giving us multiple joysticks all apparently configured to control the same things. Also, unless we take precautions, it will overwrite all the careful work we might do with its own view of how things should be.
The first step is to put “LOCKED=1” in every [JOYSTICK ...] section. This will stop it being changed so easily. It will also stop you changing it from within FS98, but it will be worth it.

another thing I find very interesting
is that FS98, and CFS, are capable
of handling up to 16 joysticks.
Holy ravioli!!!
button and axis heaven!
