Caz I really like HDR. The whole concept of blending images to better capture what the eye sees is right on. The whole issue of tone mapping is another discussion all together. I like it on many things and not so much on others. Have a look at this guy's photostream - I think he does it pretty well.

As for "in camera" I guess it all depends on how good the algorithm is for developing an HDR image. I would generally prefer doing it myself on a computer unless the camera has a lot of options for how they are processed.
