I really liked our little get together at Overloon in February and was wondering if we're planning for a similar 'meet' like end of November maybe? Starting off the 'painting season' as it were ?

My agenda is already rather full, so I thought to inquire rather sooner than later ;-)

Francois.

What a good idea François! But then at another museum!

Sure, why not?

The only thing in my agenda for November is the FS Weekend on the 6th and 7th.

:)

jankees
September 25th, 2010, 06:59
and that will be the 7th for me..

Francois
September 25th, 2010, 07:00
Cool, we'll be back from the Sates on Nov 9th. All free after that.

And yes, another museum would be good. Any proposals?

Indeed, Overloon was a great Dutch SOH meet:wiggle:

I'm at the FS weekend (as usual, I'd say:kilroy:)
So we'll meet there (maybe not all of us)

Soesterberg is supposed to be a nice place, I've never been there.

Cheers, Rob

Soesterberg is nice indeed, I have been there once with my daughter Catalina.
Her namesake wasn't there at the time, she wanted her money back...
Closer to home, the Atlantikwall (http://www.atlantikwall.nl/) museum in Noordwijk?

robcap
September 25th, 2010, 07:13
Nice choice, JAn Kees!
We'll wait for more ideas, and start a poll:ernae:

No Fs Add-on in Lelystad this year..? :jawdrop:

Soesterberg isn't bad, but they've already started to break up the aircraft (At least the ones outside) and move them to be repainted for the new meseum that will open in 2013.

Francois
September 25th, 2010, 07:25
De Atlantikwal is closed around that time, I believe. Would have been nice!

And no, no FSAddon this year. That weekend we're leaving San Francisco and I couldn't plan things differently. Alas !

Airborne Museum Oosterbeek? Is vernieuwd en ben ik al jaren niet meer geweest.

Not worth the 9 euro's they ask for it IMHO..

But we could combine it with the museum of Deelen AB (http://www.museumvlbdeelen.nl/) and other newarby Market Garden sites.

Bevrijdende vleugels (http://www.wingsofliberation.nl/) in Best near Eindhoven isn't bad either.

Hmm, I like that, you being the tour guide, and taking us to the Band of Brothers site, where they stopped the SS at the dike.

Great idea. Overloon was great, but for this edition my vote goes to Soesterberg.

Another option to keep in mind is the 'Fliegerhorst Deelen' excursie with the DRG: http://www.fliegerhorstdeelen.nl/

There's one on 13/11 and one on 11/12. Done it a few years ago; very interesting and it includes a tour of the Luftwaffe command bunker 'Diogenes'.

Sounds like a good plan too. Deelen was my first operational airbase after converting from army to air force.

Ferry_vO
September 25th, 2010, 09:43
Well you don't get to go to the base, but you will visit some of the remains of the former Fliegerhorst which was much larger than the current base. Apart from the bunker you'll get to see former hangars, the remise for the 'bomb train' that carried ammo to the base, and the Heidekamp including the home of NJG.1 founder Wolfgang Falcke. After the tour you get a free ticket for either the Deelen or Schaarsbergen museum.

Having said that, it might be wiser to take such a tour next year in the summer; the weather usually isn't that great in November to be outside most of the day.

September 25th, 2010, 13:46
For me the first opportunity would be the 20th of November, so I won't be able to join a tour at the 13th of November. I received my military training at the KKSL in Schaarsbergen. We slept in buildings which were built by the Germans as part of airfield. I never knew Diogenes was that close!

Rob, for your information Deelen and Oosterbeek are on the North side of the river Rhine. The screaming Eagles from the Band of Brothers never came that far north! ;)

I'd love to join you guys on this. But I start my new job in November, so not much free time during the week. But if the meet will be at Soesterberg I might be able to join for a short time as the MLM is the place I'm going to work :jump:

The 101st came as for as the south side of the Rhine Huub. The knew it as 'the island, we call it 'de betuwe'. The dyke Rob mentions (As seen in the episode 'Crossroads' of the Band of Brothers series) is only about 8 kilometers west of Oosterbeek but on the other side of the Rhine (Opposite Renkum).

I knew that Huub, and since Ferry will be taking us on a tour (:kilroy:), we only needed 2 bridges to cross, one going south from Oosterneek, and one going back north again (the one that was missed back then.....)

The poll is getting nearer, we have a few options already.

huub vink
September 26th, 2010, 00:47

I didn't really doubt that, but I was thinking about the combination with Deelen AB, which would make it quite a drive.

.....:kilroy: so..... Any decision made yet?

So far we have these options:

1)MLM Soesterberg (http://www.militaireluchtvaartmuseum.nl/) (Closed on Saturdays)
2)Legermuseum Delft (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/www.legermuseum.nl/get?site=legermuseum.nl)
3)Bevrijdende Vleugels Best (http://www.wingsofliberation.nl/)
4)Arnhem (http://www.arnhemsoorlogsmuseum.com/)/Oosterbeek (http://www.airbornemuseum.com/)/Deelen (http://www.museumvlbdeelen.nl/) various locations and museums

And I'll add #5: Early Birds/Vroege Vogels Lelystad (http://www.vroegevogels.org/).

So please add your vote and your preferred date(s)!

Possible dates: Sunday November 14th, 21st or the 28th? The museum is closed on Saturdays and on Sundays it is open from 12:00 till 16:30.

Any of the three days above is fine with me.

Was not there because we are currently studying the effects of the extremely heavy defense cutbacks and the personnel reductions (at least one out of seven! has to go) in the Dutch Armed Forces. I saw the announcement by Hans Hille on television Rene. So far it is just an announcement and the actual reductions could still be less. The armed forces have been shrinking for the four decades already, so it didn't really come as a surprise to me.

As there is currently no clear enemy and a huge lack of money, measures could be expected.

I really hope you will be on the good side of the cut.

Take care,

Great to see that Dornier Do-24 restored.

Don't think they've done anything to it, since it's property of the Hendon museum and on loan for twenty years (IIRC).
