Budget approval + TrackIR3 Pro + Vector Expansion = 1 Happy Camper ! :mixedsmi: :wiggle:
Thanks to all who responded to my previous post & recommended TrackIR ... as you all said, it's a truly awesome bit of kit. Highly worthwhile if you have the cash to splash.
Being able to "look around" freely while flying (and taxiing) adds immeasurably to the realism & immersion, and now I'm enjoying WM's scenery even more. Very cool to watch each of the engines on GC's Bf-110 starting up too, or to lean out to the side of the Spit's cockpit and see the glowing exhaust tips. Will have to improve my aim though ... now that I can "move around" in the cockpit I'm not always lined up behind the gunsight!
So far I'm using the default "CFS 3" settings, and have found that I need to have the camera unit sitting back so its nearly a metre away from my head to get the best results.
Any other "setup" tips from the more experienced users out there ?
Cheers - GhostFlyer
PS - For those of you who might be interested, PC Aviator are having a 10% off promotion during June (in Oz - not sure about USA) ... which I for one was keen to take advantage of when I got mine (and no, I dont have any affiliation with them!)

Well done GhostFlyer, yes it's one of those revolutionary pieces of hardware that actually does what it says it will. The first 3D Voodoo card I bought did that too.
Great combo, CFS3 plus OFF (or MAW :)) and TrackIR VE will be unbeatable.
I spend most of my time looking out of the craft and admiring the view myself and then wondering why bullets are suddenly wizzing around my head ;)

When using 6dof, as soon as your head has moved away from the initial position, the gunsight is not aligned anymore, making it difficult to aim.
Any ideas to solve this issue?

Dunno I just press F12 (default TrackIR) to centre the view to my head quickly. Or I find leaning forward to 'zoom' the view helps to aim.
In OFF you will be able to also use one of the F6 views (in my Alb and on the Camel & Pup I believe we have extra views with your eyepoint fixed behind the iron-sight, and the SE5a has the Aldis sight plus iron-sight view). Anyway I quite like the fact you have to align your head.. you would, it's particularly satisfying to align your head behind the aldis sight for real then lean forward to zoom in and make a kill.

One really may want to get acustomed to editing profiles.
for instance you can create a dead zone around the center bit of movement what helps greatly with aiming (there is a 'stock' dead zone setting that can be applied when editing profiles).
Other than that the next batch of aircraft models that is around the corner (for MAW, guess OFF too) has very detailed interior models and gunsights so that you'll be able to 'know' where your center is just by the look of your cockpit.
and well, practicing helps either.

GhostFlyer, way to go!
The first steps towards VR!
I don't have much tips but I can say the following: As soon as I using TIR3+6VOF, I decided against (ab)using the "recenter"-function, as it struck me as a bit of "cheating". The "Real World" doesn't have a re-center button either.
The easiest way I found to aim true-and-straight, is to use a reference point on the canopy frame or the nose of the aircraft (if visible) to check your line-of-sight. After a while it becomes a bit habitual and you do it without thinking too much about it. And Mathias is right: creating a dead-zone helps a lot. If you create a profile with a less sensitive center, your view doesn't move that much when looking through your reticule.
Using TIR3 requires some getting used to, as you start noticing how much you move your head when sitting in front of your monitor. I was expecting an epileptic seizure any minute, with that view going all directions. I couldn't follow my opponent in a head-on engagement with my view for instance, but now I can. It just takes some practice and I 'm sure you will get the hang of it in no-time!

Thanks for the encouragement & tips guys ... I'll have a go at tweaking the "dead zone" in the CFS3 profile when I get a moment; it sounds like a good place to start. Using a reference point from within the cockpit to help with lining up the gunsight also makes sense, and as Frosty suggested I think even at this early stage I'm beginning to get an intuitive sense of where I am in the VC without having to re-center.
I've had a chance for a bit more flying over the last day or so, and have to say that the novelty of the "new toy" has NOT worn off - I'm lovin' it! Still can't seem to land the 1% Spit MkV without crashing most of the time, :redf: but lining up on the runway and flying a landing pattern is SO much better now I can just glance out over my wing to check where I am in relation to the airfield.
Time for some more practice .... :D

One word Cam2pan. actually a name. Uses your webcam (now there's a reason to have your webcan plugged in) to track your nose works as well if not better than IR tracker. And all for 9 bucks! w00t! It has a built in plugin for IL2-FB -AEP-PF and FS 2K2/4.

Ghost - for my future reference, where did you get it from? did you order it from the US or is there an aussie supplier?

Hi Anax,
I bought mine here in Melbourne from PC Aviator (Their street address is in North Caufield, but they will ship anywhere in Australia fairly cheaply).
Website is www.pcaviator.com (http://www.pcaviator.com) , then select "Australia" as your country to get the Aussie website with $AUD prices..
There was also another computer hardware online & phone/mail-order place in Footscray that was selling them too (around the same price I think), but I can't remember their contact details.
BTW - I still reckon it was worth the money...
Cheers - GhostFlyer.
