Roadvale is a small private farm strip a few miles north of Boonah in sunny Queensland, Australia.
What's interesting is that the land is gently rolling hills so how do you build a runway? Well you use the good old cut and fill. A cutting has been made through a ridge and the waste pushed out to make the ends of the runway.
Land short and you splat into the embankment, overshoot the runway and you roll of the other end. 4 bits of corrugated iron mark out the ends of the runway. No fancy schmancy cones and gables for us Aussies. Get a bit too far left or right and you run into the walls of the embankment. ie no room for error here.
I also went a bit nuts with the photoreal and ended up doing about 4km x 7km area (soooo much autogen). At least there was only one hangar to do. But I went a bit nuts there as well and used 3 1024x1024 texture sheets to do one hangar. Not to mention putting in all the framing. 663 polys for one hangar. Plus I made a nice spec map as well so that the sun reflects off the corrugations and gives a nice 3D like effect (without using bump maps to do the corrugations). Plus I hardened the roof so if you are flying a helicopter you can land on the roof (pointless but fun).
Getting close to finishing now.
