Hi all, I'm more used to CFS3 and have just had a friend install FSX on my computer. I've not done anything to it apart from doing an update and downloading a F-16. I've noticed that there are some notes in the download area about having "acceleration" ... is this an addon and if so is it freeware and downloadable somewhere? Any help would be appreciated ... oh and feel free to say what is a MUST in the download sections :jump:

I won't say Acceleration is a "must", but after the base FSX was released there were two additional updates (free) Service Pak 1 and Service Pak 2. . .and one major upgrade which we know as Acceleration (which includes SP2). If you can afford to get the Acceleration update. . .by all means get it, there were many improvements over the base FSX and SP2 is a must in order to use many of the newer payware addons.:salute:

thanks :salute: FSX is a bit different from CFS3 isn't it. I'll start having a look around the local shops for acceleration. I see there is supposed to be a weapons enable addon as well :jump:

you can and should in the meantime, download for free SP1 and SP2 - you might only need SP2 as I do not remember if it can be installed over RTM FSX...but go to fsinsider.com and you can see for yourself.

the service packs improve FSX overall and you will see smother performance regardless of the relative strength of your PC

also - you will want to look at some fsx.cfg tweaks on this board - a couple of them are vital

Installing the SP2 update is imperative. . .without it you are greatly limited in what addons will work. Now if you decide in the interim to buy Accel., then installing SP2 isn't a big deal since it is integrated into the Acceleration Package. Just depends on how quickly you make a decision and how much if anything you want to spend to get Accel.

Hi Timbo, welcome to FSX, I'm a bit new to it as well. Be sure to install FSx and acceleration plus the service packs in the proper order....
1)FSX
2)service pack 1
3)service pack 2 (needed for some addons to work in FSX)
4)Acceleration (not absolutely neccesary, but it has extra aircraft, etc,and has some features that some addons would use, get it if you want to and can afford to))

my advice would be to install the lot for any future aircraft and scenery addons etc that will use the full features of SP2 and Acceleration.

If you're `friend` has installed HIS software onto YOUR computer you are now a pirate. Buy your own copy, and get the all-in-one package that is the currently-available product - FSX Gold. This includes Acceleration.

Then we can talk.

Sorry, but we take a VERY dim view of software piracy here.

timbo2410 didn't say with any word that the FSX software installation on his computer was from the copy his friend owns.
You're answer is something you read between the lines.

Then let him state with certainty, and then I will help.

If others wish to accord the benefit of the doubt, that's down to them.

I don't.

Snave, you are a piece of work man, you just exude negativity, lol. Hell, let's get this over with so we can move on shall we? I doubt he needs any more help either as we have all posted over and over again what he needs to do. If he hasn't figured it out by now. . .

Timbo2410, the FSX program that your "friend" loaded for you on your computer. . .is it his copy or did you purchase it and have him load it for you? If it's his copy, you have two choices. . . .remove it and buy your own so your not in the position of using a pirated copy. . .or if you continue to use it, understand that we will give you no further assistance.

If it is, in fact, your own copy, then you have all the information you need from the posts already made by myself and others to get you started and if you run into any roadblocks along the way, feel free to ask questions.

There, how's that snave?

Sufficiently negative. I use brevity, you use verbosity, but we arrive at the same point regarding pirates.

What's will all the assumptions ??? For gods sake I've been a member on the CFS3 forums for years without this sort of accusation ... for those that really MUST need to know or who really need to be pius, then I shall give you a short answer ... My mate installed the game for me as a suprise as HE had finished with it and didn't want it any more ... SATISFIED!!! For those of you who offered up hints and suggestions, I thank you very much it is much appreciated, for those of you with a more GOD like nature, get a life!

Oh, I forgot to mention, the game is NO longer in his hands it is in mine ....

I think you will find if you install Acceleration you won't need SP1 because it’s included in there.

Thanks for the heads up. Boy oh boy what an introduction ... I gotta say I have just about every addon for CFS3 and all of them have been bought with my own hard earned cash .... I don't blame people for asking but ask not suddenly denounce first and ask after. I'm knew to FSX as I said so I don't have a clue what's good, what's bad and what's available. That's why I asked on the forum. 99.9% of the time people are more than willing to help out .... and then there is the 0.1%:a1310:
but lets not dwell on that eh :ernae:

...Then you really should read the EULA. You have illegal use of the software.

It's not my rules, it's Microsoft.

And when you clicked on the acceptance button on installation you agreed to abide by them. Clearly you didn't read them first. Last time I looked, ignorance of the law was no excuse.

Buy your own copy, or read the EULA...

I have no interest in your possession or experience of CFS3. THIS is the FSX forum, and YOU are a pirate.

I look forward to helping legitimate users and hope you will become one.

I really shouldn't tell you about the hundreds of owners of a legitimate copy of FSX using a "no activation" fix...your "lawful to the death citizen" glands would explode!

One copy, one user. I don't see the problem.

I got my version of FSX as a christmas present from my parents. Clearly I am a pirate because they bought it and I'm using it...

timbo, welcome to the FSX forum! My two cents, if the sim is (essentially) a gift to you, I don't see a problem. To be honest, with your opening post, a tiny alarm bell went off in my head as well, for the reason expressed by snave. I guessed it wouldn't be too long before somebody brought it up... Your answer is reasonable. I hope you like FSX. It gets some bad press, but it has it's moments! :icon_lol:

This is from the FS9 EULA:

Software Transfer. You may permanently transfer all of your rights under this EULA, provided you retain no copies, you transfer all of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT (including all component parts, the media and printed materials, any upgrades and this EULA) and the recipient agrees to the terms of this EULA. If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is an upgrade, any transfer must include all prior versions of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

While the EULA in FSX does not contain the same express transfer of license language, it does contain language in the warranty that implies that the same sort of permanent transfer is allowed:

TERM OF WARRANTY; WARRANTY RECIPIENT; LENGTH OF ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES. The limited warranty covers the software for one year after acquired by the first user. If you receive supplements, updates, or replacement software during that year, they will be covered for the remainder of the warranty or 30 days, whichever is longer. If the first user transfers the software, the remainder of the warranty will apply to the recipient.

Above all, I will enjoy my flight sims ... after all ..... that's what they were made for weren't they :applause: And I enjoy it all the more with all the upgrades, mods, patches that the members have put together for us all to share:salute:

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. You may also have other rights which vary from country to country.

Simply put, if our posters `friend` has ever activated his copy of the simulator, then passing it either in the form of `lend` defies the EULA.

QED.

He may NOT transfer it another computer for anothers use. Expressly and clearly stated, I find. Only criminals and morons would attempt to argue the point.

Equally obviously the stupid attempt at swervery noted above - buying it as a gift for someone else - is SPECIFICALLY covered by the EULA as the purchaser need NOT be the activator... As the criterion under which transfer is permitted is not overtly stated in the EULA, you would require to take formal guidance from Microsoft - not here - as to whether you have a legitimate copy of the software or not.

At this point, you don't. FACT.

So Timbo, no need to thank me for highlighting your contravention. Something you should have noted when you read the EULA prior to accepting its license terms.

• rent, lease or lend the software; or

It doesn't say you can't give it to someone though and as noted

"If the first user transfers the software, the remainder of the warranty will apply to the recipient."

Implies the software can be transferred to a recipient, by the first user.

From that you can construe that if the first user removes the software from their computer they can give, or indeed sell it, to a recipient. There are after all a number of companies trading in second hand games, presumably their business model isn't illegal or someone would have done something.

Of course you can always drive a truck through the EULA with this bit

13. LEGAL EFFECT. This agreement describes certain legal rights. You may have other rights under the laws of your state or country. You may also have rights with respect to the party from whom you acquired the software. This agreement does not change your rights under the laws of your state or country if the laws of your state or country do not permit it to do so.

Yep, I agree Henry, despite the fact that I'm a "moron", I still think that forcing a point when it isn't there just to be "right" is unnecessary and folks like that should just go away. Timbo, enjoy your gift and welcome to FSX!!:salute:

Thanks for the comments everybody, I was going to point out to snave that nowhere in the EULA does it refer to me not being able to use this legitimate copy of FSX. It is fine to quote a EULA but they must be taken in context and not just use them to have a rant. Also, the EULA is a very broad statement, it does not cover this very case and as others have pointed out, no breach of the EULA has been made anyway. Oh and the appology I refered to snave, was not for being wrong about the facts, but it was purely for poor form on your behalf. I go now to have a quick flight :salute:
