This thing just arrived yesterday evening - fresh from restoration by John Lane, and never seen before by the public - definitely the most accurate/authentic Corsair restoration to date, and what a beauty! It is painted in the markings of a Corsair flown by Charles Lindbergh, during his time in the Pacific. Note the rare braced canopy, wing pylons, matte paint, correct engine (compared to the later type R-2800's in most Corsairs today), stencils, inspection stamps, and everything else sticking out from it! The three-tone application of the paint is also extremely accurate, and not seen before in quite so correct of a manner on other Corsair restorations.

I'll be out there this weekend, and will be sure to shoot as many photos as possible of it.

I'm normally not much on Corsairs, but I do like that one.

no restoration expert, but the paint job is really something special, never seen a corsair so pretty.
looks like a candidate for a lo-sheen mdl and hi-detail skin by one of the exceptional painters here at SOH!

Looks nice, but to be the most accurate restoration of an FG-1D it should have been painted in overall glossy sea blue scheme. Only a very few early production F4U-1D's left the factory in the three tone scheme, by the time Goodyear started producing the FG-1D, the overall glossy sea blue scheme had long been standardized.

As it is painted, it's doing a nice job of representing a F4U-1A except for the -1D pylons and the retaining rings around the formation and identification lights should be painted to match the surrounding areas.

Sorry, but no, it's not the most accurate restoration to date of a FG-1D.

Ok, I've got my nomex suit on, flame away at me for being a history snob.

If it is a -1D, it is a very early model. Not only were the first few painted in the 3 tone, but they had the same canopy frames as the -1A, same as this one has.

Far as all the Fg-1D's bein gloss sea blue, can't say fer sure without diggin out some of my books.

Other than the center wing pylons...she looks like a -1A to me. A very sharp one, which ever it is!!

If you like, I can give you the month and year of the acceptance of the first FG-1D, but Goodyear's last run of FG-1A's for the USMC left the factory in glossy sea blue, so I know they didn't turn out any FG-1D's in the three tone scheme.

Yeah, the -1A canopy is a great touch. Planes of Fame F4U-1A used to have its framed, semi-bubble canopy too, but with its last rebuild they put on the later model -1D frameless canopy.

Nope, no need. It's a sharp plane.Don't matter to me if it's a -1A,D

Thank you for the photos, Tom! Over on the WIX forum, there are some pictures even showing it with an accurate Brewster-built bomb cradle attached to the under-belly, on display a bit later yesterday, carrying that payload you have a photo of!

I like that paint job regardless of what model the aircraft is. :)
